The Cholos

The Cholos are sort of a fog-beshrouded mystery in the Fleetwood Mac annals. I remember around the time of "Law & Order" that Lindsey teamed up with Mick, Billy & one or two other guys -- Todd Sharp & George Hawkins -- & called themselves the Cholos. Whether they intended to record or just to play live, I don't know, but I do remember seeing an ad in the L.A. Times Calendar for a Cholos show at one of the local clubs here (Gazzaras or the Whiskey or something). Then I hear something somewhere -- possibly a short item in Pop Eye (Patrick Goldstein) ran with it -- that Lindsey & Mick or their management are informed that "cholo" is a derogatory term in the Hispanic community. The next thing I know, the club appearance has been canceled & the Cholos have "disappeared."

Just who were the Cholos, & what did they want?!

Postscript: I just saw on the official Billy Burnette page that the Saturday Night Live appearance in February 1982 was billed as "Los Cholos." Les at Madness Fades also has this factoid. Elsewhere -- namely the Timothy White print interview from Musician magazine the summer Lindsey quit -- Billy says that forming Los Cholos was his idea, & that Lindsey was only thinking of joining. Hawkins, Sharp & Burnette played the SNL appearance, but wasn't Steve Ross part of the short-lived group?

Hehe. I'm pretty sure they were Steve Ross, George Hawkins, Billy Burnette and Mick. For some reason I thought they were Mick's band at the time and that they backed Lindsey on SNL just because he didn't really have his own band, and so he asked them to help him out. I don't really know though...

Thanks, Les. I just postscripted, too. Maybe it's worth posting on Todd's message board just to see what he remembers.

The mystery of Los Cholos deepens!

Hmmm, I thought Steve Ross was involved somehow too, but maybe it was Todd Sharp. I can't keep all of the players straight after a while.

Wait, Todd did a Q&A on the Penguin, right? I can't remember did he say anything...I'll take a look.

Looked. Nope. ;)

I always thought the Cholos were Mick Fleetwood's Zoo lineup from 1984 which were Hawkins, Ross & Burnette. That they were kind of thrown together spur of the moment to support LB's SNL appearence. Todd Sharp was only involved on The Visitor project.

Here is a little information on Los Cholos from a timeline that I have: Mick Fleetwood's new band, Zoo (originally called the Cholos), featuring Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Delaney & Bonnie), Billy Thorpe, Gregg Wright, Tom Lilly and Brett Tuggle, signs to Capricorn Records and will release its only album Shakin' The Cage in July.

Maybe this will help solve the mystery.

Over 12 years old.

That news blip mentioning Bekka Bramlett & Billy Thorpe must have been from 1992. The last known lineup for the Zoo.
