Kenneth Starr says he shouldn't have been involved in Lewinsky case

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Kenneth Starr says he never should have led the investigation that resulted in the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton.
The former independent counsel, now dean of the Pepperdine University law school, says "the most fundamental thing that could have been done differently" was for somebody else to have investigated Clinton's statements under oath denying he had an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Starr said his role in a yearslong investigation of Clinton should have focused instead on Clinton's role in the failed Arkansas land deal known as Whitewater.

"There was a sense on the part of the country that my (Lewinsky) effort was an effort somehow to expand the (Whitewater) investigation, when it was separate," he told the Santa Barbara News-Press following a speech on Wednesday.

Clinton has accused Starr of running a partisan, Republican effort to ruin his presidency. Starr, however, defended the integrity of the investigation.

"It reinforced the proposition that all of us are subject to the law, no matter how high our station," he said. "The facts are the facts."

At his 1999 impeachment trial, Clinton was acquitted by the Senate of perjury and obstruction of justice. The Whitewater case ended with the conviction of Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker and two of Clinton's former business partners for fraud and conspiracy. Clinton was never charged.

KS was so wrong for that position. But, the R's wanted a witch hunter and that is what they got. Moreover, Reno approved it  I will always say Clinton was wrong and broke the law - but the Star investigation was the biggest bit witch hunting I have ever seen - EVER

 What an ass.

He could have easily taken himself out of the investigation. Instead, he chose to invade the privacy of the president and publish a pornographic "report" that not only embarassed the country, but read like something out of the Penthouse Forums. Hindsight is 20/20, but Mr. Starr *loved* going after Clinton and relished pissing off the lefties.

I suspect her waddle was hanging quite low that morning, obstructing her view so that she couldn't quite see what she was signing off on. :xoxo:

Interesting - but wrong from a legal point of view - Clinton was accused of sexual harrassment - the Lewinsky affair was relevant to establish a patern of activity. So, once it reached that point, the question was relevant. My point is Starr's investigation lasted so long and meandered so much that it was a witch hunt. Granted Clinton made it easy for them with Lewinsky and the cover up (and there was one  ) - but the Starr commission should have ended three years before that IMO but Reno kept broadening it - why I have NO MF idea. Now - this does not mean he did not screw that harpy Paula Jones (can you say celebrity death match  ) - of course he did - and that was bad of him and just shows poor taste LOL

OMG, Paula Jones' nose looked like some mutated thing found on Three Mile Island. I think it was an independent organism renting space smack dab in the center of her face.
