Saving Private Ryan - Christian's complain

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites) has confirmed it received complaints about the uncensored broadcast of Oscar-winning war movie "Saving Private Ryan" on ABC-affiliated stations last week.

An FCC (news - web sites) official said several complaints were filed Friday, the day after the Veterans Day broadcast, but couldn't say how many or who or where they are from. The commission has to have a complaint before it can take action.

Groups affiliated with the American Family Assn., a conservative Christian group that monitors the airwaves, pledged Thursday to flood the FCC with complaints about the language and violence in Steven Spielberg's film.
All told, "Ryan" aired in about 71% of the country, according to Nielsen data. Of ABC's 225 affiliates, 159 went ahead with "Ryan," while 66 did not. All of ABC's owned stations aired "Ryan," though stations in major markets including Boston, Atlanta and Nashville declined.

An ABC spokeswoman said Friday that the network received favorable viewer feedback and was willing to respond to any complaints the FCC receives. The network issued a statement standing by its decision.

"ABC applauds the majority of its local television affiliates across the country who chose to be part of this important Veterans' Day television event," the network said.

Despite the fact that about 30% of ABC's stations pre-empted "Ryan," the film's ratings were strong enough to power the network's to its best performance in total viewers and the coveted adults 18-49 demographic this season. An audience of 7.7 million tuned in.

Okay, maybe we need to organize and call the FCC and say, "It is refreshing to see this program in all its honesty, I am absolutely NOT offended by it." if anything similar ever airs on TV again. The extreme Christian groups frighten me with their organized antics!

I think it violated the FCC's rules regarding profanity - so it should not have been aired. But, I tend to disagrewe with those rules themselves. So, my issue with it is slightly different.

BTW - I LOVED how the pundits were all saying "if you do not like it, then do not watch it" - yet they cannot apply that logic to other things they personally find distasteful and want banned.

They never took issue with airing it before, which it was. They never took issue with airing Schindler's List, which was even more violent and horrifying, and also contained full frontal male and female nudity.

But, then again, the FCC didn't take issue with Faux news for airing an advertisement that showed full penis penetration.

Pixelated genitalia? Big no-no. The explicit broadcasting of actual penetration? Sure!

Actually, they were having sex and the whole area was pixelated, so it was more than just frontal nudity. Ah, the moral right must just look the other way for Fox broadcasting

I missed this. Apparently Spielberg would not allow SPR to be "edited for television" so it either had to air as it is or not at all. I guess we haven't stated what some of us may think is obvious, the real issue is it shows war too graphically and so is "inappropriate" in a time of war, just like images of coffins returning is. It is a conniving sort of censorship. It has more to do with that than with the Christian groups IMO.

I do not think anyone argues that. People just objected to the lang. If anything the movie would inspire patriotism

It may be my twisted imagination or penchant for wordplay, but I am almost certain there was a porn take off of this film called "Saving Ryan's Privates". I think I would have preferred to see that.

Yep...

I wish.
to me it's so telling how much religious f**ktards object to language and sexuality more than violence....though i submit that a bunch of the middle staters woulda been inducted into the "spank-it-till-it-hurts" club with that airing....

God forbid that young men who are looking for their own limbs after they were blown off should say "F-U-C-K" or some other wirty dord.

They act like this is a purely fictional movie -- you know, violence for the sake of violence. If anything, I'm sure the movie is very very tame compared to the actual D-Day invasion.
