OSOTM Press Conference

Anyone hear this yet? It's at http://www.bluewhitefire.com/

Nothing extraordinary except the part at 14:00 where they start hounding her with questions about the drugs and Betty Ford:

kinda hard to make out the questions...

question: something something time you spent at the Betty Ford Clinic did
you have a drinking problem?
Stevie: i did not go in there for drinking. No. I went in there for something
else.

question: inaudible
Stevie: Well i didn't just go there to have a good time...(you hear people
laughing and a few people clapping)

question: why DID you go there then?
Stevie: I went there cause i WANTED to go there.
(you can tell she's getting uncomfortable)

question: did it change you at all going there?
Stevie: (pauses)well, 28 days out of your...out of...a long time of living the
kind of life that i have led. uhh...yes, it changed me very much.

here's where it gets good....

question: do you avoid drugs and drinking these days?
stevie: (abruptly) i REALLY don't want to talk about this!

host/convenor (or whatever he's called): next question....

she got pissed. i mean, if you listen to it, it looks worse transcribed but you can tell she was trying to answer the questions really simply, all the while thinking they'll move onto another topic....but NOOOOOO! it's never like that.
once they have dirt, they GOT DIRT.

Just goes to show you how "in the closet" Stevie was about all of that back then. Forget it, now she doesn't think twice about talking about it. Actually, i don't think at that time (1989) or even before that, anyone really knew what she was in there for. I remember hearing about it and reading an article about FM's upcoming TITN album and they mentioned she had gone. But that was it. I think it was Mick's book that really exposed all of it.

She wasn't at any of the Clinton press conferences, she was "sick."

I love the OSOTM press conference, she is PISSED. I don't know if Tiffany posted the video or audio, but if you haven't seen the video, get it because it's priceless. She was brutal to the press!

This press conference was taped in Amsterdam at a music convention called Rock Over Europe. Stevie, Lori and Sharon also performed (i.e. lip synched BADLY ;-) ) Rooms On Fire later that day.

For years I was too embarrassed to watch footage of the press conference: I mean, Stevie finally makes it to Holland as a solo artist and she gets treated like this. I was so mad at the press for asking those personal questions, instead of just focusing on the music.

So when TISL came out, I was really surprised to see that Stevie was so open about her addictions in EVERY single interview. I've always wondered why. I mean, the Klonopin years were long gone and she'd re-established herself as a credible performer after The Dance and Enchanted, so why so much focus on the bad years? Part of me thinks that she thought it would make for more interesting reading: overcoming obstacles in an Oprah-esque way. Anything to sell records???

I guess I don't always look for nefarious intent, but certainly suppose that could very well be true. Personally I look at the Stevie of recent years and just think she's much more comfortable in her own skin and as such more willing to be honest (so long as that honesty is doled out on her own terms) about the past. Not to mention the fact that the social attitudes towards things like rehab is much more open and forgiving today than it was 15 years ago. A stint in rehab just isn't the griss for the gossip mill that it once was.

very true...and it's chic to go into rehab now. it's like, if you don't there's something wrong with you.
