Favorite sad songs?

I've been toying with the idea of making a few mix cd's. After checking with some friends a mix of sad songs won out, just barely over 80s party music. I've been making a few lists and thought I would ask for some imput. I'm trying to not have any band overrepresented. Here's what I've got so far?

"Pretty Good Year" - Tori Amos
"HAEWAFY" - Stevie
"Storms" - FMac
"Adam's Song" - Blink 182
"I will Remember You" - Sarah McLachlan
"Mad World" - Gary Jules
"Name" - Goo Goo Dolls
"River" - Joni Mitchell
"Grieve" - Peter Gabriel
"Why" - Annie Lennox
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Tori Amos
"Hurt" - Johnny Cash

So, what are some of your favorite songs? Any suggestions would be appreciated and although I haven't started the 80's mix, feel free to comment on that if you'd like. Any and all suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks

Michael

EDIT: recieved a couple suggestions already! FMac - "Why" and James Taylor - "Fire and Rain" added.

One of my most favorite sad songs is "Wildfire" by Michael Martin Murphy. I just love this song but everytime I hear it I get a lump in my throat and tear up. Beautiful.

I copied my current melancholy playlist off of my iPod, which I update every week for new moods (what can I say, I like being sad):

Sad songs that everyone should think are sad:
Why- Annie Lennox
I Wonder- Chris Isaak
I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You-Colin Hay
Chelsea- Counting Crows
Never Is A Promise- Fiona Apple
Peter Pan- Patty Griffin
Here Comes the Flood- Peter Gabriel
Keep Me In Your Heart- Warren Zevon
I Still Miss Someone- J.C.
Always on My Mind- Willie

Songs that aren't necessarily sad but make me sad:
Thirteen- Big Star
Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen
Amy Hit The Atmosphere- Counting Crows
A Long December- Counting Crows
Goodnight Elisabeth- Counting Crows
Slip-Away-David Bowie
End of the Innocence- Don Henley
Ballad of Big Nothing- Elliott Smith
Lover, You Should've Come Over- Jeff Buckley
Farewell, Angelina- John Mellencamp
Black Books- Nils Lofgren
Spanish Dancer- Patti Scialfa
Mary- Patty Griffin
High and Dry- Radiohead
The Horses- Rickie Lee Jones
I Dreamed I Stopped Dreaming- Sam Phillips
New Slang- The Shins
The Boy With the Thorn in His Side- The Smiths
Wild Horses- The Sundays
Wicked Little Town- Hedwig
Closer to You- The Wallflowers
Side of the Road- Lucinda Williams (the saddest song I think I know)

I think all Aimee Mann songs would fit into the "Saddest Songs" category. Especially her songs for Magnolia.

I was going to list Aimee and then realized I'd have to put the entire tracklist for Magnolia and half of Bachelor No. 2!

 I know! I think we could safely include every song from I'm With Stupid, too. She sure is depressing, but for cripes sake, she's amazing. I'm salivating for a new album.

Agreed!

She could be singing about bunnies and Happy Meal toys and fuzzy slippers and it would still sound sad. I love her.

Did you pick up the limited edition of Lost In Space? It's the next best thing to a new album because it has an extra disc of live songs, b-sides, and unreleased tracks. Truly fantastic set, IMO.

Probably one of the single saddest songs ever commited to tape... Fleetwood Mac's "Man Of The World."

Breaks my heart every time I hear it. (Which must make me a masochist, I guess, because I love that song and listen to it often!)

I did, it's great! She's done amazing things as a businesswoman, too, in the industry, and I give her major props for that.

I second JStew on "Man of the World"- it's a heartbreaking song.

Two that get me...

I Will Remember You - Amy Grant

I will be walking one day
Down a street far away
And see a face in the crowd and smile
Knowing how you made me laugh
Hearing sweet echoes of you from the past
I will remember you.

Look into my eyes while you're near
Tell me what's happening here
See that I don't want to say good-bye
Our love is frozen in time
I'll be your champion and you will be mine
I will remember you.

Later on
When this fire is an ember
Later on
When the nights not so tender
Given time
Though it's hard to remember darlin'
I will be holding
I'll still be holding to you
I will remember you.

So many years come and gone
And yet the memory is strong
One word we never could learn
Good-bye
True love is frozen in time
I'll be your champion and you will be mine
I will remember you
So please remember
I will remember you
I will remember you
I will remember you
I will remember you

Hello Goodbye by Michael W. Smith (song about the death of a child :( )

Where's the navigator of your destiny
Where is the dealer of this hand
Who can explain
Life and its brevity
'Cause there is nothing here
That I can understand
You and I
Have barely met
And I just don't want to let go of you yet

Chorus:
Noah, hello, good-bye
I'll see you on the other side
Noah, sweet child of mine
I'll see you on the other side

And so I hold your tiny hand in mine
For the hardest thing I've ever had to face
Heaven calls for you
Before it calls for me
When you get there save me a place
A place where I can share your smile
And I can hold you for more than just awhile
