Cheney: Economic Stats Miss EBay Sales

Indicators measure the nation's unemployment rate, consumer spending and other economic milestones, but Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) says it misses the hundreds of thousands who make money selling on eBay.

"That's a source that didn't even exist 10 years ago," Cheney told an audience in Cincinnati on Thursday. "Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."

San Jose, Calif.-based EBay Inc. is an Internet auction site where anyone can sell just about anything, including clothing, cell phones, jewelry, memorabilia, trinkets and automobiles.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) responded that Cheney's comments show how "out of touch" he and President Bush (news - web sites) are with the economy.

"If we only included bake sales and how much money kids make at lemonade stands, this economy would really be cooking," Edwards said in a statement.

What about garage sales and the nice Mexican lady who sells tamales door-to-door on my street? (Which are SOOOOO good ... argggggggggghhhhh...) If they include all these economic powerhouse activities, there might never have even been a recession!!!

Damn, this even tops 'Go f*** yourself'. That's how arrogant it is. This could be along the lines of 'Let them eat cake'. I hope voters know this so they can get rid of President Cheney faster than kitty poop.

Yes, I've heard this point of view before. My boyfriend listens to those horrible right wing talk radio stations that drive me nuts. They get this info. from household polls. Whatever.

In addition to being one of the most idiotic and arrogant things I've ever heard lately--it's also a lie. Imagine that--a Republican lying. Any-who, Ebay is a public company--it has to report its sales volume as a result. Therefore, the sales made on E-bay are already counted in the economic statistics!

strandinthewind 09-13-2004 05:48 AM

I have to say, I know people who make well over $100,000 a year reselling on Ebay. So . . .

But, to imply that the overall economy could be significantly impacted by this is a ruse. Ebay is just no large enough to have that stated effect. Plus, the govt. already gets a cut of that income because Ebay is subject to corp. tax on the profit from its cut of the sales and I am sure some of the Ebay resellers pay their taxes, though certainly not all ( ) AND - Ebay is an outlet for major department stores like Sears, who already figure into the economy

So, once again, the VP is inaccurate!
