Rhiannon 10/24/87
Anyone else think this is a particularly good version of Rhiannon with the "nothing ever changes" ad lib and the way she wails Rhiaaaaanon at the end?

This Nothing Ever Changes version is currently up at bluewhitefire.com if anyone wants it.
And I am VERY shocked at how amazing this version is. I always expected the Tango Rhiannon's would suck because A) Stevie is lifeless on the Tango video and B) they dropped Rhiannon a month into the tour. But it just blew me away it's for sure the best post cocaine Rhiannon I've ever heard to this point (the old best was her Street Angle performances) I love the Nithing Ever Changes and in some ways this is better then the Mirage tour versions. Rick Vito for sure does a better job then lindsey with recreating parts of the studio version that I love. |

i saw them at the Forum in LA on 12-7 (or maybe it was the 8th - they played two nights) and i was surprised that there was no rhiannon, especially after just reading Rolling Stone's review of one of the first few shows that mentioned the song as one that was performed. |

it depends on what angle you look at it.... ;) |
WOW. That was great. I saw them do the song on the tour and it was basically the same comatose version from the Main Road boot. The guitar work was outstanding, the vocals really tight. AND, the pace was right. The pace is the actually the biggest problem with the current versions. It's really become a dirge.
So glad to have heard this. |
WOW! Fantastic. Thanks for posting and outpointing.
Maybe the last truly transfixing performance of "Rhiannon"? Actually, that brings up an interesting question: When was the last truly great live "Rhiannon"? I know there were some pretty good ones on the SA tour, but I don't think they were this good. |
I would agree that this was the last truly great Rhiannon ever. Cause shortly after this it was dropped. It was never done on the Mirror tour. It tooka freaking NOSEDIVE for the Mask tour. The Timespace tour sucked just as much as the Mask tour. Street Angel saw MASSIVe improvement over the previous 2 tours. I'd say just under this new Tango performance. The Dance vdeo isn't that impressive at all. But on some of the bootlegs for that tour she kicks it up at the end quite a bit, but for Rhiannon to be truly great I feel she has to sing it with furry the whole way through like on this tango performance. I've not yet heard an Enchanted Rhiannon, but the first four woodstock songs have blew me away (OTR, GDW, Enchanted, and Dreams) Rhiannon should be coming up so I'll get back to you there. For the TISL tour Rhiannon hit al time lows in my book. And now we're at the 2003-2004 shows. Rhiannon has a renewed energy that hasn't been seen in awhile. It's weird middle while not as great as the Street Angel and Tango Performances, it's miles ahead of the dreadful Mask, Timespace, and TISL versions.
So after all my explaining I'll go with either Tango or Street angel for last great Rhiannon. But I have a feeling Woodstock 98 might end up being the last great rhiannon, I just haven't head it yet, I'll be sure to reply to this thread when I hear it. And I'd like to say that who knows maybe something inside Stevie will snap in the future and we might see another era of great Rhiannon's soon. I'd say the SYW tour has seen the best ever performances of Stand Back and Gold Dust Woman. And Rhiannon was definitely rocking and full of energy on most occasions. |
I personally witnessed a blistering rendition of Rhiannon at Red Rocks in 1991-the first time she played there solo since RAL (she played McNichols Arena for OSOTM). I've never seen this show in circulation, in fact I don't know if it even exists.
