Break Down of The Other Side of the Mirror
With apologies to Hawkeye (who usually starts these "Break Down" threads), I just couldn't wait for this one after having to force myself to rate the abysmal Rock a Little.
Sorry, Hawk, if I stole yer fire!! :wavey: Omnipotence: Ooh My Love Greater God: Juliet, Doing the Best That I Can, Ghosts, Alice, Whole Lotta Trouble Lesser God: Rooms On Fire, Long Way to Go Demi-God: I Still Miss Someone Human: Fire Burning Spermatazoa: Two Kinds of Love (the bridge is great, though) Wart on the ass of a spermatazoa: Cry Wolf (holy ****- a cover of a Laura Branigan piece of ****- what was she thinking?!?!?!?) I really, really think this album is underrated, mostly because of Rupert Hines's production. But I think the songwriting is fantastic- especially considering that crap that was Tango in the Night and Rock a Little- and Stevie's voice is pretty good, considering she was smoking four packs of Kools a day. |
It's alright. And I like OSOTM alot better then Rock a Little but not better then much else
INCREDIBLE: Doing the Best I Can, Long Way To Go, REALLY Good: Ghosts, Juliet, Alice Good: Rooms on Fire, Cry Wolf, Whole Lotta Trouble EHH: Fire Burning, Oooh My Love Sucks: Two Kinds of Love Would rather get a root canal while being burnt alive and having my eyes eaten by a pack of wolves and the wolves also take a piss on me: I Still Miss Someone |

Before the dawn of separation... That's the best category I've heard yet. And so accurate... "ISMS" is truly dreadful! Here are the rest of mine: A: Rooms on Fire, Ghosts, Ooh My Love B: Cry Wolf (grew on me!), Juliet, Long Way to Go, Fire Burning C: Alice D: Two Kinds of Love, Doing the Best I Can (I don't get the appeal... it's a monotonous dirge to my ears) F: Whole Lotta Trouble, I Still Miss Someone |
Great: Rooms On Fire, Long Way To Go, Ooh My Love, Whole Lotta Trouble (weak by Stevie standards, but I think it's fun song), Juliet, Doing the Best That I Can
Good: Fire Burning, Alice (leaves me a bit exhausted sometimes, it's way too long and rambling) Utter ****: Two Kinds of Love, Ghosts, Cry Wold, I Still Miss Someone |
This is actually my favorite Stevie record besides Bella Donna...
Long Way to Go is my favorite....I love her angry ****! Alice....i dub it the cousin of "Sara". One of my favorites from the album. Ghosts....this song is phenomenal....to me, the song is like a nice peaceful summer afternoon...when all of a sudden the bridge comes on like the sky turning ominously grey and then opens up on the virgin land below...but only for a few moments until the sun comes back out, and everything returns to normal. it just dawned on me recently that it sounds like something she would have written years prior. It's got a very Bella Donna feel to it. Doing the Best I Can...I thought this was a masterpiece when i first heard it. I still do. I've never heard Stevie talk about this song but, to me, it was her subtle way of commenting on the "morning after" period of her life (ie, post drugs - well, at least the cocaine and booze). It was her saying "i'll do the best i can (considering what i've been through). Oh, and i love the "ah ha's" at the end. I expected to see this in concert. Never happened. Oh well. Ooh My Love...It's got a little "outside the rain" thing going on in the middle. love that. anyway, nothing profound to say about this. I just think she sounded great on this song. Two Kinds of Love....This is a kind of melancholic song to me. I love the second verse, "he says i don't know how you do what you do....how you let the world in...." I also love the repeating "two kinds of love" at the end. Fire Burning...Nothing special. When i heard what the background was behind the song, it kind of got knocked down a few notches. But, none the less, she wins the award for most inspiration from a garage fire. I tend to skip over this one. Whole Lotta Trouble...I tend to skip over this one too. It's a cool song but i tend to shy away from the gutsy, tough Stevie. I did like it on the "Enchanted" tour though. She really got into it, throwing in a lot of classic Stevie ad-libbing. Cry Wolf...i have to say that i have grown to really like this song. Again, love the ending, "WELL IF YOU CRY WOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLF!" Juliet....I do like this song and it's cool. But there are times that i skip over it. I still laugh when i think of the coked up Tango sessions version. I Still Miss Someone....Johnny Cash....it's gotta be cool. However, not on this record. I didn't think it was an appropriate closer, nor did i find the "connection" to the theme of the album. I can take it in small doses. Rooms On Fire...I didn't put this last cause i didn't like it, it's just that it was the single from the record and is pretty well known. Liked it when i first heard it, and still do. Don't listen to it all the time with the other songs, but more than the others that i skip over. |

Will Pull Out For A Compilation : Long Way To Go, Ooh My Love, DTBIC
Will Listen To : Fire Burning, Rooms On Fire, Cry Wolf, Whole Lotta Will Almost Always Skip : Ghosts, Two Kinds Of Love, Alice, Juliet Endures Due To Sheer Curiosity : I Still Miss Someone In hindsight, I don't care for this record too much. The synths, the self reverence, the plodding mid tempo of it all...haven't played it in it's entirety for years. |
I listened to 'The Other Side Of The Mirror' tonight in its entirety, for the first time in a long while, and I had forgotten how much I loved several of these songs. If I hadn't listened to it again, I may have rated some of these a little lower based on how my perception of the album had changed over the years.
I'm glad I went back and played it all the way through again. :) To Run Over The Stones & Down To The Sea For: Rooms On Fire, Long Way To Go, Ooh My Love, Ghosts, Whole Lotta Trouble, Juliet, Doing The Best That I Can (Escape From Berlin) To Run Up The Stairs & Down The Hall For: Fire Burning, Alice To Run Through The Garden For: Cry Wolf, Two Kinds Of Love (Fantastic chorus though, and excellent harmonies between Stevie & Bruce Hornsby), I Still Miss Someone (Blue Eyes) (Stevie's vocal on this song is PERFECTION, but Rupert Hine's cold production really did the song a HUGE disservice. Had it been produced better, it would have ranked among my top picks.) "Run For Your Life," Cried The Mad Hatter: NONE |
