The economy has been slowing dramatically since late spring and it's going to get pretty bad come November. Also, two weeks ago, the government released a report disclosing that the "Clinton recession" that the right-wingers like to throw around was never a recession at all.

AND - Sandy Berger was just acquitted of everything.

Talk about between a rock and a hard place. This is Bush's best economic period for his presidency, statistically. In comparison to Clinton, it would be Clinton's worst economic time. Think about that for a second.
Also, the Fed was widely expected to raise the prime rate by a quarter on Tuesday but how can they do it now? If Greenspan doesn't though, it hurts our dollar. Who will be sacrificed?

U.S. Economy Slows Dramatically in Spring
WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of just 3 percent in the spring, a dramatic slowdown from the rapid pace of the past year, as consumer spending fell to the weakest rate since the slowdown of 2001, the government reported Friday.

The Commerce Department said that the gross domestic product, the country's total output of goods and services, slowed sharply in the April-June quarter from a 4.5 percent growth rate in the first three months of the year.

The size of the slowdown caught economists by surprise. Many had been looking for GDP growth to come in around 3.8 percent in the second quarter. Even that would have been a sharp deceleration for an economy that had been growing at a 5.4 percent annual rate through the year ending in March.

It raised the issue of whether the economy, which Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said last week had encountered a "soft patch" in June, could be in danger of seeing growth falter even more in coming quarters.

US 2001 Slump May Not Have Been Recession at All
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Not only was the U.S. recession in 2001 the shallowest on record, it may not have been one at all -- at least in the classic sense of two straight quarterly declines, new government data show.

In annual revisions to U.S. gross domestic product numbers released on Friday that could fuel a politically charged debate, the Commerce Department rewrote the history of the recent downturn by revising away a decline in the second quarter of 2001.

The new figures, which reflect more complete source data, show economic activity peaked in the second quarter of 2001, not the fourth quarter of 2000.

Looking at BEA data for 2001, Q1 showed -0.5%, Q2 showed +1.2%, Q3 showed -1.4%, and Q4 +1.6%.

A recession is generally defined as two or more quarters of negative growth, back to back.

Bush says US economy "strong and getting stronger"

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...e_economy_bush

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Facing a tough reelection battle, President George W. Bush (news - web sites) shrugged off official figures showing stunningly anemic job creation in July and insisted the US economy was "strong and it's getting stronger."

Government figures showed US employers hired a meagre 32,000 extra workers in July, shocking analysts who had generally predicted a gain of 243,000 and shattering expectations of a rebound from sluggish job growth in June.

In a speech to some 7,000 minority journalists, Bush made no reference to the news and said instead that he had been right to push trillion-dollar tax cuts through the US Congress.

I know he's desperate, but c'mon!

Did you hear what he just said? And I quote:

"We actually misnamed the War on Terror. It ought to be the Struggle Against Ideological Extremists Who Do Not Believe in Free Societies Who Happen to Use Terror as a Weapon To Try To Shape The Conscience Of The Free World."

When asked about tribal sovereignty in the 21st century later, he replied:

"Tribal sovereignty means that, it's sovereign."

WOOT!!!! :blob2:

Did anyone see his speech today where he was talking about how it was important for soveriegn people to remain soveriegn and protect their sovereignty or something?? It was to a council of Minority members of the media, I think (the same one that Kerry spoke to the other day while he was in Davenport.)

Apparently the audience laughed at his non-sensical answers.
