Any Jayhawks fans in here?
 

Everytime I put on Hollywood Town Hall or Tomorrow the Green Grass I'm reminded of Fleetwood Mac.

Surely there are big Jayhawks fans in here

I've seen them play so many times and their live shows also remind me of Fleetwood Mac - on a good night

yes I do - it's great but it might just be my least favorite of all their albums

Do either of you guys like the Twilight Singers? Their new album due out next month has a really great cover of "What Makes You Think You're the One"...

We're BOTH too cool for school! I love Greg & the Twilight Singers. I have heard it- a friend got an advance and I was able to listen to it- but I couldn't make a copy for myself. If I get it and can, I'll send it to you.

I wanted to post about it, but figured why bother until there's at least a sound clip or something on the Internet.

I had never really realized Greg was an FM fan before, that's really cool.

In that case, let me give you my impressoins about the Jayhawks: Wimpy pop with delusions of important art. Tired old melodies over thin guitar tracks weighed down by unimpressive lyrics.

Tomorrow the Green Grass is one of my all time faves.

Not pop!? Surely you jest. True enough about the country radio comment, but believe it or not, there is still real country out there today, and it ain't the Jayhawks.

That may seem so, but only because I don't gush as much as some people over what I like. ;)

Wilco was great when they were twangy. Now they're just too weird. Their lyrics don't even make sense half the time anymore. "I assassin down the avenue?" What the hell does that mean? Hey, Jeff, "assassin" is not a verb, hear?

Ryan Adams is great. Too bad the record company made him record that atrociously derivative pop album, which is entirely forgettable. However, Love is Hell, parts 1 and 2, are great.

How's that for balance?

Sharon, I only got to hear Greg's version the one time, although I think I'll be getting a copy soon. It was relaxed, it has a nice shuffle, the vocals are great. He gives it a little bit of heart. I'll try to track it down.

I'm also clueless as to why anyone would say that the Jayhawks have delusions of important art either- they write simple alt-country pop songs, which I view as an art in itself, but certainly not one with room for delusions of overimportance. Now, if we were talking about someone like the Flaming Lips or Wilco, then I'd start to agree.

Not to say I don't like Wilco, I do- but I prefer their older stuff as well. I am a big Ryan Adams fan, although I prefer the Whiskeytown stuff, and Heartbreaker- then again, I could listen to the entire catalog of Bloodshot Records, Heartbreaker included, and be a happy girl. I like the Love Is Hell eps, and a few songs off Rock and Roll- with LIH and a few tracks of Rock and Roll, he could have made ONE really good album.

I'm an alt country fan through and through, as well as the classics, and my allegiance lies with Johnny, Willie, and Lucinda (who belongs in the same category as those two).

Thanks for the music recommendations folks! I caught the tail end of a Jayhawks performance on Austin City Limits and thought they were great and added them to my "Must Buy" list.

There's nothing "country" about that band - they never claimed that label and if you ever see them live - you'll agree that they're all about rock and roll

Your Wilco comments just made you lose all credibility - get out of the suburbs and start living - you can't go though life being so judgmental all the time - you're missing out on too much life!

I've been in a surly mood, but I am feeling a lot more positive today. :) You think I'm that young!!?? Cool. I thought I was beginning to sound like a codger. That's a relief.

I've heard enough of their stuff to know they don't interest me. Have borrowed albums from friends, and they actually get played fairly frequently on the only local station, which is non-commercial, that I ever listen to anymore. A couple of their members were being interviewed by this radio station at some point, and they seemed to take themselves too seriously, hence my comments. Perhaps I misread them.

I'm not the one who said they are country. In fact, I argued to the contrary. They strike me as being "country" in the way that, say, CCR was. As for seeing them live, well, that's not going to happen, so I'll take your word for it. I simply don't enjoy going to concerts much anymore. It took me until June of this year to see Fleetwood Mac. I'd rather go to small clubs and see local artists, or just put on CD, know what I mean?

I've lived in a large metropolis most of my life. I've lived in other countries and I've seen a good chunk of the world. Telling me to "start living" is laughable and idiotic; you don't know enough about me to make such comments.

Wilco was a fun band, fun to listen to, and then they definitely started to take themselves too seriously. Perhaps because Woody's daughter thought they were a big deal it went to their heads. I listen to the first two records and I can truly enjoy them. Then I listen to the stuff that came after, with exceptions like How to Fight Loneliness and Jesus, Etc., and I have to just shake my head. They want to be experimental? Fine, it's their right. They want to write nonsensical lyrics (and I repeat "assassin" is not a verb)? Hey, that's their right to. You like it? Fine. But do I have to like it because you do? And if I don't, I'm not living enough? Seems to me you have a little more maturing to do, otherwise you wouldn't say things like that.

I believe he is referring to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

I maintain their approach is more like CCR's, though not quite as good. Look up CCR; they were big in the 60s. Great stuff too: Proud Mary. Who'll Stop the Rain. Run through the Jungle. Fortunate Son. Bad Moon Rising. Great stuff.
