Generation X? What is it?
Tonight finally they’ll show the Friends finale in WB LatinAmerica (though I already know how it ends).
Yesterday they showed a Friends special at A&E. A columnist said that this show was the favorite of the Generation X. They were caught by this because it showed everything they thought, felt, etc. I’m not sure. First of all, since I’m a guy from the 80s (I’m 38 so I don’t think I belong to the generation x) , when the 90s arrived, it came with a bunch of boring things. The 80s were very cool. Kind of commercial, yes, maybe full of material girl, Duran Duran, Culture Club and Ronald Reagan, but cool anyway. I guess in the 90s they tried to deny the superficial things (ok, that was good) and go back to more deep stuff (hard to me to describe in english what I want to say, but I’ll try my best). :sorry: So then (early 90s) I started to hear about that Generation X. To me, this was expressed in two movies and alternative music. When they say alternative music, I immediately think in Counting Crows. Some cool songs, but I can’t listen a whole album. It’s too boring. And the two movies: SINGLES, a very cool movie. Maybe because the main characters also missed the 80s. And REALITY BITES. So boring!!! Actually in SouthAmerica it was translated as Generación X. So everytime I listen about the generation X, I remember Reality Bites and Counting Crows. And... Friends has little common with Reality Bites and Counting Crows.!! I my opinion the generation X didn’t have sense of humor, so Friends couldn’t be their symbol. It’s my feeling. Maybe the generation x is far more than that. But it’s what I just kew about it. |

I always thought Generation X was my generation. Kids born between about 1975-1985 or so. The "Reagan" babies as some people refer to it.

I know when I was in retail/management the articles all said that Generation X was a difficult market, with little loyalty to products & little consciousness of themselves as a collective group (the way the Baby Boomers are).
I was born in 1970, so I barely made it into Generation X. Whoo-hoo. - Jake |
My understanding is that Gen X'ers were born in the 70's.

If you were born from 1946 to 1964, you are considered a Baby Boomer.
Generation X are people who were born from 1965 to 1976. That would be me! People who were born from 1977 to 1994 are considered The Millennials. :) Personally, everyone tells me I was born at the wrong time; that I should have been a baby boomer/flower child. :p |

Eh...
I wish I had been born earlier, as I feel like I'm sort of an old soul anyways. I wish I had been a teenager in the 80's, instead of a younger child. But ah well, whattayagannado?
Generation X is supposed to be the lazy a$$ group, right? That would describe me well. |
The 80s were cool

Well I didn't mean about politics. the "Reagan era" I mean was something very material (full expressed in the Material Girl song), full of fashion and MTV, where people were interested more in business, business, and business, and the ideals were a bit behind. I didn't saya Reagan was cool. I said that in spite of some things, the 80s were cool. |

Anyway, I got my information from an economics textbook. This is a highly debated topic. Therefore, just about anywhere you look, you will find different years with different information. These are the years that I have seen repeated most often---in the above textbook and on some sites on the internet. |

Well, I don't feel like belonging to that. My point was that gen-x people were very 90s, and I consider myself 80s. And 80s were very fun. I did enjoyed the 90s (oh those nights drinking in the beach, and lot of travels, lot of fun), but the charm was lost, 80s had lot of enchant. (BTW, th mac almost dissapeared until 1997) |

The NPR report was talking about how those born between the baby boomers and Generation X are being labeled "Generation Jones"- a reference to those who grew up in the early 70's and were influenced by the likes of Cheech and Chong and others. |
