Old Movies Rediscovered

What movies have you seen years after they came out and instantly fell in love with? Like, lesser-known movies that you came across by accident.

This past year, I've seen these and immediately bought them:

-Don't Look Now: I never heard anything about this with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, but picked it up when I saw it on the "New To DVD" shelf. It's from the early seventies and, IMO, a masterpiece. It's about a couple whose daughter drowns while playing outside in a red raincoat. They move to Venice and see a small person walking the streets, wearing a red slicker... Very scary and creepy and the ending was horrifying. And I defy anyone who has seen it to tell me that love scene between Christie and Sutherland was fake!!!!!

-Romeo Is Bleeding: Lena Olin rocks. Probably the most vicious and sadistic female character I've ever seen in a movie. And that includes Roseanne in "She-Devil." Great movie.

I watched Klute a couple of weeks ago and I really thought it was well done.

I had to see it for a film class years ago. I still remember the skylight scene very well.

Now don't laugh, but I never knew W.C. Fields worked in a Griffith picture until I saw "Sally of the Sawdust" for sale on Image a few weeks ago. I ordered it, watched it & now it's in heavy rotation with my other Fields favorites. That's 80 years after it was released!

There are tons of movies that I've fallen in love with years, or even decades, after their release, but I've almost always known something about them before I saw them ("Kiss Me Deadly," "Hail the Conquering Hero," "Vera Cruz," "The Naked Spur"). But I hadn't ever heard of "Sally of the Sawdust," even though I've always loved all the Fields talkies.

I picked "Sally of the Sawdust" up at Media Play a few months back for $6. ;) I thought Carol Dempster was fantastic in it, it's a shame she didn't make any more movies after Sorrows of Satan (which I really didn't care for, to be honest). I've not seen or read the original play, but from what I hear, they made some pretty drastic changes for the film version of Sawdust.

I watched that movie a couple of months ago (because I was renting anything with Gary Oldman in it) but imho, it sucked! ;)

Now that I bring up GO, try State Of Grace. Great movie.

I watched it again last night and I loved it even more. :] The only thing I disliked was the ending, I didn't like how they got rid of Lena Olin. BUT - how could you not love how she killed Roy Scheider?! Or that fake arm?! Or the fight scene where she was handcuffed in Oldman's car?!

LOVE that movie. ;)

Well, these are not neccesarily lesser known...

9 to 5 - I didn't see this movie until high school, and I instantly fell in love with it...it's now one of the movies I have close to memorized.

Heavenly Creatures - I remember once my aunt and unlce were watching it, when it was first released onto video, I saw all of two minutes of it, then years later I rented it and totally fell in love with it...it's also one of my favorite movies.

Star Wars - I refused to watch these movies for so long, but finally caved my senior year of high school....and became a huge fan!

I first saw Harold & Maude in the last five years.

movies

Well they are not lesser known but it forever for me to fall in love with them:

Breakfast at Tiffany's _ I'd seen it a few times, but in the midst of exam week it finally made me laugh and i just finally got it.

Grease: I really really didn't ever want to see this movie, but I like it now, I practically had to be dragged to it's re-release in the theater though.

The Breakfast Club: I grew up in part in the 80s but totally missed this one until the late 90s, ended up really liking it.

Forrest Gump: I really did not want to see this movie, but my Dad brought it home, I made him buy it for me afterwards.

Almost Famous: I LOVE this movie, but it was another I didn't really care to see, but they had a showing on campus and my bf. at the time dragged me to it, now have the movie and the sound track (love the song Tiny Dancer):)

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969):

A wonderful and often overlooked movie. It features a brilliant cast who rise to the occasion of playing exhausted dance marathon contestants. Some may find it boring since the whole thing takes place at the dance marathon but I found it very captivating. It's also a movie that has some career-best performances for the cast.

A little Romance

Immediately I thought in A Little Romance

Blockbuster has a special this month, us$10 and you can pick all movies you want, one at a time.

So after watching all recent movies I was interested, I started to check the old faves.

And I found this movie with a teen Diane Lane (I guess her first) and Laurence Olivier, about a teen couple who fall in love in Europe. :xoxo:

It's a very innocent and nice story. And you see beautiful places of Paris and Venice.
