Family Man, the song
 

So instead of "I am what I am" replace it with "I yam what I yam." And then, instead of "a family man!" replace it with "a sailor man!" Suddenly it becomes the Popeye song and its even more ridiculous sounding! I think the only thing I ever liked about that song was Lindsey's guitar riffs.

I dont mean any offence...
 

...but, Ive just never understood what people dont see in Family Man. I myself love the song, I love the way it sung, the riffs, everything, I just dont see anything wrong with it, I love it, not to say that everyone has there own opinion.

Oh i like it too. I don't skip over it when it comes on, but I have to say it just sounds uber-cheesy.

I think that would be what I don't like about it. It's "ubber-cheesy" and has a very 1987 sound to it - like most of the stuff I've heard off of Tango in the Night. I don't the lyrics just don't do anything for me, unlike many other Lindsey songs.

MAybe the words are not so deep, no trascendental message. Yeah, maybe it's a silly song, but it sounds cool. I like it. Not a masterpiece, but easy to listen

Screw that! "Family Man" blows chunks. A VERY irritating song. Although, it's better than even crappier LB songs such as "Empire State" and "Not That Funny".

I really like Family Man mainly for the music, but I seriously have no problem with those lyrics either. And I love the Iam Waht I Yams. Now Not That Funny on the other hand is not only good it's a masterpiece. Empire State is ehhh.

I love "Family Man"... it's great fun. The lyrics are simplistic, but effective, and the instrumentation & production are terrific. Not to mention that the end solo is ultra-cool. :nod: :)

Anyways... Just exactly what is it about "Family Man" that I don't understand? Please clue me in, oh benevolent master.

Family Man.... It took a while but I'm now a fan... I just look beyond the admittedly pretty stupid lyrics and enjoy the sound, the rhythm and the guitar work... And who cares if it sounds "1987". At least it was innovative and fresh and different at the time. Maybe it seems dated now but I have a feeling that 80's production techniques are coming back into vogue when I hear stuff like Outkast and Scissor Sisters...

"Empire State". Why oh why does this song generate such hatred!! It's among my absolute favourites, musically its incredibly fresh sounding even now... those vibraphones, the tinkly guitar sound, the mmmmss and choppy guitars on the chorus! I love the lyrics as well, very evocative of New York's bustle and impersonality...

"Not That Funny". Another absolute favourite. Again what's not to like!! Timeless, innovative sound - those lovely tinkly guitars bouncing around on top of the grungey riffs and rhythm, and a great passionate vocal from Lindsey. I love the way the song sort of splits off into different waves at the end, all jostling for prominence and ending up really chaotic and exciting... Mighty stuff!

Whats really crappy is when people dismiss stuff completely by calling it "crappy" or "sh*t" or whatever... It tends to get people's backs up whereas "I don't like Family Man.." or "I think "Not That Funny" is crap" is a bit less confrontational! We're all entitled to our opinions after all (even when they are wrong!) ;)

Family Man is awesome!! Again, the guitar is phenominal and it's a very unusual sound for a song, IMO.

NTF is probably my least fave LB song, but that's not saying much as there HAS to be a least fave on our lists, and I still love the song. Live....he's NUTS on it!!

Yeah, I prefer to say the word opinion because it's not crap to someone else. One man's "trash" is another man's "treasure", right? ;)

I think LB is the weakest in the lyric department but he never claimed to be the best at it.


I guess because I have followed him for so long, I understand what he is trying to convey and it sits just fine with me.
