how much "mac" were Lindsey's Tusk-songs?

I don't know for sure, but I thought that lindsey recorded all those tracks at home and THEN took them back into the bandenvironment. I'm sure that Mick's drumming is on WMYTYTO, johns' bass, too? I'm quite sure Mick plays on NTF, and the whole band's on Tusk. Is there anybody out there who can quote the right sources to prove I'm not wrong here? And what about the other songs? I really think I recently read (in an old article?) that Save Me A Place was the only "lindsey only"-song in the definite version of the album. So, anybody? Les? Carne?

It annoys me that that "lindsey worked on his own during Tusk"-argument pops up in a lot of the discussions here and I really want that straightened out, or at least get some nuances on that.

Gerald, I believe Save Me a Place and The Ledge went into the album without "interference" from the band. All the other tunes Lindsey brought into the studio to finish, or re-record, with the other band members. For instance, you can see with IKINW that the song changes considerably through it's evolution. If I'm not mistaken, one of the versions in the Tusk bonus CD is at a different temop. At one point it sounds like it's Lindsey just banging on a box, but eventually it has the full drum set.

I bet ChiliD and Les can shed some more light on this.

Yeah, I thought so..., thank you, to get more on this I'm calling....

Les!..........ChiliD!

could you shine your light on this please?

I wonder if anyone really knows this stuff exactly since even ChiliD found out a while ago that it's supposedly Mick playing on "What Makes You Think You're The One". Someone was speculating on the LegBoard once that Chris isn't on "WMYTYTO", it's Lindsey playing the piano there. Chris was supposedly exhausted after playing all those barrages of chords when they did it live, so that would partially confirm the speculation.

I was under the impression, too, that only "WMYTYTO" and "Tusk" have FM playing, the rest is solely Buckingham.

If Mr. and Mrs. Experience ever get around to answering to this one ;) (yes, I know you have lives to live) then I'm also interested in hearing about the Tango In The Night songs as well. My impression is that Lindsey's tracks on the album are all Lindsey but there's the possibility for exceptions John's bass and Mick's drum overdubs on "Caroline", for instance".

Or maybe LB just wants to hide all this information from us, so that he wouldn't be such a horrible egoist in front of our eyes. to Hippocampus' post. ;)

I believe it's "Walk A thin Line". :wavey:

Lindsey's changed his tune over the years in a few instances. And even those of us who think we know what we're hearing are wrong as often as we're right. Incidentally, doing the leg work in the BLA isn't that difficult; it's just time-consuming.

On "The Ledge" it’s not two basses, though. It’s a bass and a guitar that has been tuned down half an octave. And that is just a snare. I did that song at my house. [BAM mag 1.30.81]

It seemed so while we were making Tusk. I would be in the studio and do something and they’d say they like it, or I’d come in after working on a song for four or five days and they’d never heard it, and they’d react well. In retrospect, though, I wonder how they felt about some of my stuff. [BAM mag 1.30.81]

I've got a 24-track. There are two or three songs on Tusk that were done that way, just at my house, and they went onto the album. …(With you playing all of the instruments?) …Yeah. "The Ledge," "Save Me A Place," and "That's Enough For Me." [Musician mag 6.81]

On Tusk I played all the instruments on a few songs – "The Ledge," "Save Me A Place," I played bass and drums on "What Makes You Think You’re The One." [BAM mag 11.20.81]

So I got an MCI twenty-four track in one of the back rooms where I was living, and a little Shure mixer, and one microphone, and just cut a lot of stuff in my house. Probably half of my songs on the Tusk album were done just like that, with just a click track and me playing all the instruments and going for something that was a little bit new and different. [Guitar World 1.83]

Part of the problem is Lindsey's contradictory information. Several yrs ago, he was quoted in some guitar mag (Guitar Player or one of those) that Mick's drum track on "What Makes You Think You're The One?" was one of his, Mick's, supreme moments with the band. Lindsey compared it to John Lennon ("Mother" maybe?).

Thanks, David!! That helps to get some clarity

David, Lindsey compared that to the drum track on Instant Karma. What I have concluded is that Lindsey recorded the original tune by himself, drums and all, then took it to the studio to re-track the drums. He had high praise for Mick's work on that song. And to my ear, it is one of the best drummed tunes of the Rumours lineup.

Lindsey has also spoken of hurting Mick's drumming sensibilities by doing some drum work himself, but I think he was referring to the Kleenex boxes.

Probably. I think there were additional contributions from some of the others too on several tracks. The Tusk documentary shows John working on a bass part for a Lindsey tune. Lindsey's always given full credit to Mick for concocting the USC marching band idea for Tusk. As he's said, it seems he worked alone initially but he did bring his songs to the band for their attention and ideas and contributions.

I've gotten the impression that The Ledge and Save Me A Place were two that were probably Lindsey only, as some of the quotes David pulled up seem to support. Hard to say exactly though. In some cases, where the others aren't on some of his songs, it may be because they didn't want to add anything. Stevie indicated that Christine didn't like Lindsey's songs, and that Christine (and she as well, I think) didn't want to be on some of Lindsey's songs, so I think the lack of input from the others on his songs may have been their own decisions at times.

I don't know if I really added much to the conversation, Gerald. But I'm flattered you thought I could. ;)

chiliD 04-27-2004 10:46 AM

Yeah, I remember reading some quote from Christine groaning about having to play "What Makes You Think You're The One" in concert and how her hands would cramp up in the middle of the song. (Which led me to assume Lindsey played that part on the recording)

jbrownsjr 04-27-2004 11:25 AM

It's actually Christine on WMYTYTO. I read that she did it but it hurt her wrists to play it due to her having sensative wrists. Then she said it was going to be rough because it was in the setlist.

Yes, you all add something. It's interesting. Everytime I come over here I have a new reason to listen to the album for the 9126th time and counting. So keep it flowing friends!

I hope I can watch the Tusk-doc in a couple of weeks, 'cause I've never ever seen that one before.

Ok :o I'm feeling extra hurried now, that'll really help me get rid of my years old procrastination-problem... :sorry:
uh, good news, I have figured out now, from my new videoplayer manual, how to copy a tape...

take your time, Mari, don't feel rushed. It's great that you offered to do that. So i can wait.

In the meantime (yes!pun!), I downloaded the cassette-demo of Deep Dense from BuckinghamNicks.net. Thanks for posting!!!Have you guys heard that one? I almost p*ssed my pants laughing about that one. He sounds like a friggin retarded ape who just boozed a bottle of Jack D. on it! After listening to it twice, it struck me as a VERY interesting insight in how he builds melodylines into songideas. Really fantastic.

LOL!!!!!! Yeah, it's.... "interesting." Glad you enjoyed it - it is good for an academic study of Lindsey, if not actually enjoyable on its own merits. lol
