Which Peacekeeper is best?

The original version?

The SYW version?

The Louisville slugger?

There is the tin can or cup version as well!!!!!!

Personally, I like SN harmonies, but it is a different song then from the far darker GOS version.

I prefer...

The original version....I don't care for her bgv's and it's much more upbeat, IMO.

I almost wet myself when I first heard the original on QX FM (Radio station in Weatherford, Texas). They play that and SYW (the album version!) quite alot. :)

That`s what? The live video or something else?

My favourite version is the GOS original, I like LB singing the higher part esp on the bridge. (on, in, at, during- what do you say in english? Whatever- you know what I mean)

But they still keep playing the album version on my radio station WDR2. During summer (sic!) it was for two or three weeks the most requested song (no I did not call) and on every weekend there is a show where the top 5 requested are played- so on this show it was number 1 ;)
Everytime I heard it start I was a little irritated, it`s unusual to hear new FM stuff on the radio. And the beginning of the song has a certain trademark sound, you identify the track at once.

So hearing it that often was fine and I also like the album version, it's good, whereas the GOS version is very good.

I think the reason why it drags live is that there is so much going on in these studio versions. It`s hard to translate that to a live situation. Somebody said that in a different thread about Sara and I totally agree. That's relatively often to be seen with great pop singles. Hold me or Little lies were not easy to perform live too, otherwise they would have included them.

Can I marry the best parts of the 'GoS' version with the best parts of the 'SYW' version?

No?
Ok then, since I dislike the drum machine on Lindsey's solo version, and since Stevie's harmony vocals on the 'SYW' version complete the song for me, I'm going to have to choose the latter. :)

The problem for me was that the "harmony vocals" were more than that- it almost sounds like a duet. Stevies part on the chorus was too much infront imo. But as I said- I still like the song though.

I can understand that.

Oddly enough, in the liner notes to Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' 'Hard Promises,' Stevie is credited for "harmony vocals" on "Insider"... which most people would consider a duet, too, because of the equal prominence of the two voices.

It's interesting that on "Peacekeeper," Stevie isn't just singing a few lines here and there (ala "Miranda"), and then the chorus, but rather is singing on about 95% of the song.
And as I've said, I quite like it, since... to me, at least... it harkens back to the early days, and songs like "I Don't Want To Know," or the unreleased demo, "Without You," where both singers are harmonizing throughout the entire song.

Maybe that's the effect Lindsey was going for in deciding to re-work "Peacekeeper"?

Johnny, another point may be that he considered PK as the most probable first single and therefore Stevie should have played a prominent role. = People recognize her voice within the context of FM = more public interest/more airplay...

As for the IDWTK duet approach. That once again is very much a taste thing. This song is one of those that always left me cold. I don`t mind a duet every now and then, but if that was the approach of the next album (and LB once said something like that) then I`m not too happy with it. I like clearly defined arrays for them. As we most probably won't see a new LB solo album I`d like to hear his songs in the FM context. I love his voice and somehow it gets drowned by Stevie, well everyones voice would drown there I think. It changes the character of a song too much. I am glad she contributed to SYHA but I am also glad that she didn`t on some others (RR, Come etc)

On Red Rover, I agree. but Stevies voice on Come could have brought a very interesting edge on it.

The original. It moves into the harmony and builds, making it more powerful overall. In the SYW version, Stevie's right there right off. I also think she is too loud - it's like a duet, as others have mentioned.

I've never heard the GOS version that everyone's talking about, but of the two I've heard (the ACLU Bill of Rights CD & the "Say You Will" track), I prefer the ACLU promo CD version. It sounds more modern, & the chorus is prettier & stronger. It's sung better.

CarneVaca 03-24-2004 10:34 PM

David, the original version to which I referred is the ACLU version. Some folks call it the GOS version.

golden braid 03-24-2004 11:32 PM

I prefer the GOS version. I don't like the weird special effects in the chorus on the SYW version.

I came across Fleetwood Mac serendipity; flipping channels for the best band on late night talk shows….The group was performing PEACEKEEPER and I liked it! Found the melody - mesmeric…. the lyrics–profound…the "chicken" guitar - Bon ("It's My Life") Jovi-esque, and the John-Mick rhythm section as tight as Buckingham’s body. :)

I love the SAY YOU WILL version of PEACEKEEPER...but nothing can beat Buck’s baby blues full-of-passion when he sings his song – LIVE!
