Help please (FM Rumours era ?)
 

Hoping someone can help me out a bit with a timeline...

A friend from work found out I love the Mac & was talking about her senior year in high school, saying she vividly remembers hearing " Don't Stop" - but she graduated in 1976. I pointed out thet Rumours didn't come out til 2/77. She argued with me so much I second guessed myself & double checked - of course, I was correct!

One of my ?'s is: is there any way possible she could have heard this in 1976? I'm thinking no, since sources have the single listed as released in 1977.

Wondering if it was GYOW she heard, since this is listed as being released as a single in 1976 - anyone know WHEN in 76? I would assume late 76, which would mean she had graduated already & maybe it was a college memory, not a high school one. Just curious...

Another thing - when exactly did LB & SN break up & start writing the Rumours tunes? For some reason I thought it was after the White album tour, but I was listening to the Winston-Salem (November I think?)1975 boot last night & GYOW is there, so I guess it was during that tour & not after? Is the date on that boot correct?

Did the band then go right to the studio & start recording, since there's only about 14 months between the end of the 75 tour & the release of Rumours? Or were they recording here & there between shows too?

I don't know why this is all bothering me so much, but I have the incredible need to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

According to Roy Carter and Steve Clarke in their book 'Fleetwood Mac' 'Don't Stop' was released in the UK on 1 April 1977 and in the US on 6 July 1977. 'Go Your Own Way' was released in the US as a single on 20 December 1976 and again on September 23 1977. The Rumours album was released on February 11 1977. I guess your friend must have heard GYOW. HTH.

P.S. Mick Fleetwood's book is pretty good at detailing the chronology of when Lindsey and Stevie split up and the recording of Rumours.

Thanks, Angela. I did read Mick's book, but since so many things seemed a bit exaggerated (to say the least) I wasn't sure how accurate the info was.

I doubt that she would have heard it before June of 1976. They were working on the album that year. I do have a tape of them in concert from the summer of 1976 and they played some of the actual Rumours songs. They introduced them as never before played and they included "don't stop". Unless your friend was at that show, i doubt she heard it on the radio.

The album didn't come out till 2-77, but "go your own way" was released (as previously posted) late in 1976. It may be possible that radio played some select tracks prior to the release of the album. i'm not sure though. most likely, your friend is mistaking the year she heard it.

i think Stevie and Lindsey were having problems right from the beginning of FM...They both said that their relationship was a little rocky when they joined. "go your own way" was obviously written in 1975 since they performed it at that show on the white album tour. also, just because the song was written doesn't mean that they had literally broken up. The things that Lindsey were writing about were just going through his mind.

i remember reading in Mick's book that Stevie left Lindsey in January of 1976...however, i think they were on and off for the next year or so, as i recall both Stevie and Lindsey saying that themselves.

Finally, yeah, they recorded parts of that album while they were on the road. i think "go your own way" was actually recorded in Florida.

Yeah "Go Your Own Way" made its public debut on stage in November 1975...but, it sure sounded a lot different than when it finally was released as a single nearly a year later.

Just a note: "You Make Loving Fun" also made its public concert debut in the spring of 1976 when they played it at the Universal Amphitheatre LA in May (or June?) of that year.

...I think they were "on & off" all the way up until Lindsey finally quit in 1987, but that's just me.

additionally, "silver springs" was played on that 1976 tour...at least at a few shows.

Alternatively...she got her graduation year wrong and the song right!! :)
