How Stevie's Changed

I was listening to Say You Will, the song, the other day and realized something. SYW is basically a song about getting another chance. The same goes for Reconsider Me, yet in the 80's Stevie wouldn't put that song on an album because (I think this is true) she didn't like the idea of asking a man to "Reconsider Her." It was just kind of interesting to me, and it kind of makes me wonder if Stevie's heart is so wild anymore.

You're right, in the liner notes to 'Enchanted,' Stevie stated that she fought with Jimmy Iovine in 1984/1985, over his desire for her to record "Reconsider Me."

She said that she couldn't imagine ever asking a guy to "reconsider" being with her... so she balked at including it on 'Rock A Little.'

So I think "Say You Will" is a great example of how Stevie has matured as a person.
She's no longer in a place where her ego wouldn't allow her to ask a lover for a second chance at their relationship, with the hope of making the second time even better.

It seems that Stevie's still a "wild heart"... but she's now wiser in regards to the compromises and work it takes to make a relationship last.

I guess I tend to feel more along the lines of how Stevie did in the mid-80s... once a relationship has been ended, I'm not about to ask someone to give it another chance.
But the line, "at least give me time to change your mind... it always seems to heal the wounds, if I can get you to dance," is definitely a romantic and persuasive argument for those "second times." :)

"Blame it on my wild heart...."

I think the two songs are about two diffent things.

I think Reconsider Me is about Stevie begging via Warron Zevon's words a former lover who jilted her to reconsider her when there is nothing better around - hence "When your all alone and you need someone - telephone and I'll come running."

I think SYW is about a mutual ending and then she is trying to cajole the former amour to come back one more time even if not for romantic reasons. I forgot the obscure place she said she got the inspiration for the song. I think the song is about her gettng LB to rejoin FM.

But, to answer the original question, yes, La Nicks has mellowed!!!!!!

I don't know about that, I thought her comments about Madonna and Britney were not the muted words of a wise mellow person. It was a strong condemnation. but don't get me wrong, I've always liked Stevie spunk...

though the theme of both songs may be similar there is at least a 15 year gap and most people are in different phases of their life when that much time has passed. "Reconsider Me" was brought to Stevie at a time in her life when she was "riding high" on her career and her broken relationship with Lindsey was less than ten years old.

By the time she reconsidered "Reconsider Me" enough to put it on Enchanted...her broken relationship with Lindsey was almost 20 years old with no other lasting love in her life, she was past her child bearing years, she had gone through and survived her career lowpoint and I'm not even going to start mentioning her drug additions...

So I definetely think she learned a few life lessons in that timespace and her change of heart occurred much earlier then Say You Will more around the Dance period.

my own personal view is that Say You Will was written about/for Christine. But it is one of the Phoenix Four which were ulitimately inspired by Sept 11th.

I thought Say You Will was about Chistine. When she sings the line "at least give me the time to change your mind.... it always seems to heel the wounds, if I can get you to dance", it's about asking Christine not to leave. She's asking for a chance to change Christine's mind about leaving and if she would get her to dance again (referring to The Dance because Chris left during The Dance tour). Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's my 2 cents.

Say You Will was written based on a movie about the life of Arturo Sandoval.

Interesting. I had assumed that it was at least partially about Lindsey because of these lyrics:

Somethin' in you brought out somethin' in me, that I've never been since
That part of me that was only for you,
That kind of romance
Comes only once, that kind of love
That kind of fever dance
That you love because you become someone else in an instant

Somethin' in you put a hold on my heart
Here is the place that will never be dark
I remember that place...
That kind of touch, electricity of love
That certain kind of grace
That you love because you become someone else in an instant

Maybe of course, I just thought that because I feel the same way about my great lost-love!

I'm a Warren Zevon fan too, and loved Reconsider Me long before Stevie did her thing with it. To me the two songs have completely different tones. Warren's is more filled with regret, sorrow, and remorse, telling this lost love that he it's okay if they disagree and that he still loves them.

Stevie's song is more playful, upbeat, filled with a sense of nostalgia as she looks back at this former love and tells them that she can still remember the way that he made her feel, and letting him know that it's never been that way with anyone else. But I can definately see where parts of it could also be about Christine, or could be inspired by the film mentioned. The part about getting them to "dance" also reminds me of "The Dance", so as always with our Stevie, it could have and most probably does have many, many different meanings. Whatever it does mean, it's one of my very favorite Stevie songs ever, because it also has great personal meaning for me.

See, these are the lines I think refers to LB and La Nicks' love affair on stage. I guess it could be elsewhere also, although they both vehemently deny it.

I think it is an homage to Chris's writing stlye and her sunny, poppy, catchy lyrics, and the chorus is very Christine-esque, but the verses are clearly about LB and their relationship..... however deep that may or may not be these days.

Stevie had said it herself that SYW is just not about Lindsey so we at least know that part of the song is, which "...that kind of fever dance..." I think that has to do with him. I heard that parts of the song were also about Christine and that movie, whatever it's called... I think it's mostly about Linds though, like the movie possibly inspired her b/c wasn't it like a romance kinda movie? Well the characters could have reminded her of Linds and her.

I do not think Say You Will is about Lindsey at all...could be about her little boyfriend she had around The Dance reunion...

I guess it can be interpreted in many ways...I for one am just not a Lindsey/Stevie romantic I guess..
