"No Spoken Word" 1986 Red Rocks...speaking in tongues!!!

ok...the thread about "Sisters of the Moon" and the speaking in tongues Mirage version got me to thinking....if you've seen the Red Rocks concert then you might know what i'm talking about....i want to know if anyone can translate what she is babbling about in the following part:

well it will make you wiser
and it will make you look
she said look out, look out
i don't know how to learn
not from the pages
&$%#*@)!_$^@&^$%^@)(!!!! from a book!

anyone got any clues?

dissention 08-20-2003 01:16 PM

She says "And not, not, not, not from a book!!!"

:D

i don't know....i think it's more than that....i almost hear in the beginning "well that goddamn.....something something something"

she probably doesn't even realize what she said.

this brings to mind the alpine valley 1986 concert that i was at....during "edge of seventeen" she says:

"well, in flood of tears...
noone really ever heard the fall b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-
but me!"

i have that bootleg as well...but i was also there. she really went off on some tangents during the instrumental part of "Rhiannon"..."the sky was blue!....well we heard it through the grapevine....you started it" i don't know what she was referring to...the band? the audience? who knows!

LMAO!

I have to bust out that boot and listen to it!! I also have a show from the RAL tour where she goes off No Spoken Word. I don't know what show it is, but during the "I don't know how to learn" part, she goes "I never knew the words, I just don't know the words...I don't know them! Not those words!!"

I've heard of a version of "No Spoken Word" where she says something about a goddamn book...maybe that's the same one?

That's the Alpine Valley Music Center show, isn't it? I've often wondered whether she was referencing "Lover Come Back to Me" or her own "Juliet" in its larval stage. For some reason, she started introducing the band during the "Rhiannon" instrumental break.

That tour was the last of my big front-row extravaganzas. I sat up front for all of Stevie's appearances in CA: Sacramento, L.A., Orange Co., San Diego, Fresno. I thought she was a blast at every show. Yes, she was buzzed or whatever, but that's rock & roll, isn't it? She put on great shows because her natural stage fright was in check, pharmaceutically speaking.

Two Rock a Little shows I wish I had seen in person: Madison Square Garden in August & Jones Beach in June. Those two have to rank with two of her best solo gigs of all time. If I compare either of those with, for example, what I saw at Irvine Meadows in 2001, I can only shake my head sadly & confusedly, & think of that line from the poem: "Do not go gentle into that good night"

David, i so agree with you....yeah, that was the alpine valley music theater in wisconsin....i lived in chicago at the time and was fortunate enough to see her there. i remember there were hippies there doing some real interesting dances...i watched them more than the actual show! and then there was poplar creek a few weeks later....the poplar creek show has surfaced as "cloaks and daggers"....anyway, yeah, the shows were great....i wasn't aware at the time about the drugs...i was only 16 and a bit naive. i wish i could go back and relive those moments. and, yeah, it IS rock and roll so who cares....we didn't at the time....and that was the end of that particular era for her. that tour was her swan song.

I have a Jones Beach show on video and she was pretty wild....it was almost scary cause she definately seemed possessed especially during "edge of seventeen"...i can see her with that feathered cap and walking around in a half circle with the mic just going off chanting "well, will you come gently in my shadow when i call you......she says, i know what it sounds like....I KNOW WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE!" then Sharon comes rushing over for the last verse and i think Stevie almost threw her right off track cause her singing kind of almost cut into the next verse....Sharon was probably like "well, should i go back or are you going to let me sing?!" Stevie was VERY eager to sing in those days...i think every other line in that tour started off with "well well well...."

I think it was probably "Juliet"....she also previewed "Whole Lotta Trouble" either in Chicago or Jones Beach....in between songs when she was walking off the stage she went to one of the girl's mics and sang "well this could be a whole lotta trouble for YOU!"

That's sort of a scary thought though, isn't it?
Surely, if Stevie had continued on that trajectory, she wouldn't be alive today.

I have a huge amount of affection for that time period, and kind of wish we'd see more examples of that wildness again. But then, it was nearly 20 years ago, and she's in an entirely different place.
I guess it's apples and oranges, really, and we probably shouldn't even compare the two eras, since Stevie is pretty much an entirely different person from those days.

Some would say she's better now... others would vehemently disagree.
As much as I love her just as she is today, I will always have a place in my heart for the days when Stevie was rocking far more than just a little. :)

I've often wondered that myself.

I've heard old boots during shows and I'm like, Poor Sharon and Lori...with Stevie's crazy ass singing, how did they know when to do the backup parts? It would have driven me nuts!

I have always believed she was saying "I don't know how to learn form some God damn motherf*cking book..." in the Red Rocks version of No Spoken Word . We've all heard the potty mouth before. Does anyone know what book she's talking aout?
