Stevie Asking for Drugs?

Wow! I found this page via Tracy's page (www.burnish.net) which has Stevie asking for a joint! She talks about that and smoking hash. And she is asking if it would be OK, not telling them to get her one! Very different than what you would expect back in the day! You gotta hear it, if you haven't already!

I would love to know more about the background on this recording. My best guess it that it is just prior to the Belladonna release - they are talking about the first single, etc. to be released.

If anyone can ID the other voices, that would be cool!

I think this "Outside the Rain" demo stuff is from January 1980 (maybe someone who has the reel-to-reel studio sheets handy can confirm). So when she's referring to the eight-week tour, it could be the first leg of the Tusk Tour (which was just a little under eight weeks). We've got a lot of reel-to-reel master stuff she did in January '80 -- that was a monthlong break in Fleetwood Mac's tour & apparently Stevie took full advantage of it.

The "Tom" guy playing the bass isn't necessarily Tom Petty. It could be Tom Moncrief, who knew Stevie a long time: he played bass for the Buckingham Nicks band in '73 or '74, I forget which, plus he co-wrote "Golden Braid" with her, which they cut for "Bella Donna." In the old Penguin Photo Gallery, there used to be a lot of pics for sale of Stevie at a New York party in 1978 or 1979, chatting with Tom Moncrief. Does anyone remember those? Plus, Moncrief played bass for Walter Egan, & Stevie & Lindsey worked with Walter a bunch in those days.

On some of the studio demos for "Castaway," Stevie also talks to a "Tom" -- I just always figured it was Moncrief but I really don't know for sure. The demos I'm thinking of are when she plays that little electric piano to a drum machine -- very primitive. But there are other times when she's recording takes of various things with a bunch of musicians who are obviously the Heartbreakers -- you couldn't mistake Stan Lynch & Benmont Tench for anyone else. But I think her Heartbreaker studio work started a little later than Jan '80 -- I think there's some stuff from July '80. I really wish somebody with a Web page would put up a giant timeline of all the known recording dates off those reel-to-reel boxes.

ROFLMAO!! Hilarious! Yeah, she's so coy about asking for a joint, but she REALLY wanted those candles and incense - STAT! LOL

David

If you are willing to research this as a joint project, I am willing to host it. Let me know

David if Tom is Tom Moncrief then when does Bob Glaub enter the picture?

It might be Moncrief (the All Music site spells his name Moncrieff, btw). I really don't know for sure. I'm just surmising. I think the date of that "Outside the Rain" stuff is Jan. 29, 1980. Where are all those GIFs of the reel boxes that were sent around earlier? Didn't anyone save those?

Glaub was a session player (like Russ Kunkel). It's those guys' jobs to freelance. A producer (like Jimmy Iovine) will call them & offer them a recording job -- or even a touring job. Glaub was brought in to play some bass on the "Bella Donna" album, probably because he was part of that whole Los Angeles session player scene that encompassed the Eagles & Linda Ronstadt & Jackson Browne, all the '70s folk-rock singer-songwriters. Stylistically, he fit right in with both Stevie herself & the other hands (like David Adelstein & Russ Kunkel & Waddy Wachtel) hired to record for Stevie.

Glaub recorded some of the bass tracks for "Bella Donna" & then was her touring bassist in 1981. The only other thing I remember him doing with her was the US Festival in 1983. But you'd have to check her discography to see whether he was hired to play any more bass for her in the studio. He never toured with her again, but that's all I remember. Interestingly, Tom Moncrief(f) also played some bass on the "Bella Donna" album (at least according to All Music). I didn't know he was on any of Stevie's solo albums.

I'd love to, only I'd need a lot of help from a lot of people. I have not been keeping copies of any of the JPGs or GIFs of these reel-to-reel boxes. For the most part, what little info I have is in the file tags on the MP3s, & those aren't always ... you know, there.

Actually, David, Tom Moncrieff was Walter Egan's co-lead guitarist, not bass player. John Selk was Egan's bass player.

More trivia related to names mentioned in this thread:

Bob Glaub was also Jackson Browne's bass player when Rick Vito was the lead guitarist.

Thanks for the correction, ChiliD. I don't know why I thought it was bass. I think I took my nod from memory of that old 1980 Daisann McLane piece from Rolling Stone ("Five Not So Easy Pieces"). I looked that up & found a little pseudo-confirmation for the possibility that Tom M. is the guy doing those demos with Stevie:

"The relationships--and not necessarily the sexual ones--among the members of the band and the people around them are as complicated as the plot of a Russian novel. For example, seven years ago, close buddies Lindsey Buckingham, Tom Moncrieff, Richard Dashut and Stephanie Nicks lived together in a small house in Los Angeles. Now, Buckingham and Nicks are in the band, Dashut is their coproducer and Moncrieff most recently played bass for Walter Egan's band--which Buckingham has produced--and helps Stevie make demos."

Apparently Tom's part of a surf band called Surf Nation. Their first album is supposed to be out next month: www.surfnation.us Annie McLoone is in the band!

You all are such a wealth of information - thanks for the background!

I was wondering if that was Petty, who was there. My guess is that it probably is around the time frame that you said because of her age (31 or 32 at the time).

Moncrieff could have very well been playing bass with Walter prior to my seeing Walter live around the time of Fundamental Roll. I know he played bass for Walter Egan & John Zambetti's surf band "The Malibooz"...maybe that's where the reference came from??? Come to think of it, I DO recall seeing a credit or two of Moncrieff playing bass on FR...John Selk might've been added so Moncrieff could play some of the lead parts for the live shows, since Walter & Lindsey did most of the solos on the record.
Lindsey plays on a couple of cuts on the first "Malibooz" album, too (which is basically Walter Egan's "Professional Band" plus Zambetti).
