Both sides or pick a side?

I don’t want to cause drama — but I have a genuine question for LB fans post-FM split. I didn’t see FM with Neil Finn, and any Stevie concerts didn’t work for my schedule. Now with the new Stevie tour with Vanessa Carlton I really have lost any desire to see her live even though I used to go to Stevie shows whenever she was in my town. Anyone else experiencing this?

HomerMcvie 07-25-2022 10:17 AM

They're OLD now, and all have very little voices left, so you're paying to hear backup singers, or karaoke tracks.

That said, I'd still go to a Lindsey solo show, or a FM show if they brought him back.

ALTHOUGH IF HE AND $TEVIE HELD HANDS AND MADE GOOGLY EYES, I'D PROJECTILE VOMIT ALL OVER THE ENTIRE VENUE.

anusha 07-25-2022 10:40 AM

Oh 100% on them making googly eyes and holding hands. I remember maybe Q Magazine noting back in 1998 that the hand holding etc. was more or less for show. At the time, I wrote it off as them being snarky about FM as a legacy act (Q was a very snarky British music magazine back in the day). But now looking back, it’s hard not to be very skeptical of the lovey-dovey schtick they did between 1998-2018. After The Dance and particularly without Christine, I think they were acutely aware that the SN/LB dynamic was a big draw. Part of me wonders if they could even put on a show after this very public, very nasty split. Their whole persona has been overcoming their differences and the love that is still there. They’ve never been a shut up and sing for the money band like The Eagles.

(My autocorrect just changed lovey-dovey to lovey-dicey and that is so on point!)

I tend to think they won’t tour again anyway. But there’s a lot of money in touring and that has motivated them plenty of times before.

Yeah, but age is what's stopping them now. They're OLD AF.

Yeah, for the most part I am really over them. The 2018 Lindsey firing really sort of forced me into losing my interest in all of them. That said, I really liked Lindsey's solo album and went to his show last fall and it was a great time! Yes, karaoke tracks and all! The thing about a Lindsey show - it was in a small theater where the ticket cost me $50, parking was free, and a beer was $6. Even as someone who admittedly has not been into much of LB's solo work ever, the set was varied enough with a good selection from his solo work and a solid amount of Fleetwood Mac songs that you know and love. I went with my Dad and for a little over 100 bucks we had a great night out. Compare to what it would cost to see a reunited Fleetwood Mac - nah, at this point I think I'd have to do some major mental gymnastics to do that again even if Lindsey did rejoin.

Stevie's solo shows generally bore me too much and with how she behaved regarding Lindsey, I'm done with that. And if there was even a remote chance I'd want to go watch her 'twirl,' tell rambling stories that nobody cares about, play the same songs that she's trotted out for 20 years, and try to croak out an increasingly sluggish and monotonous Rhiannon....Vanessa Carlton...NOPE. Not a chance.

Yep, this. The money would likely be there but could they pull it off? I have serious doubts you'll ever see either of the McVie's tour in any capacity again - especially John. A Fleetwood Mac with Mick and a somehow 'reunited' Lindsey and Stevie trying to place what happened behind them, backed by an absolute army that it would take to make it make sense....lord, what a mess. And who would be selecting the army? Stevie would insist on her people which would immediately piss Lindsey off. I don't ever see it happening.

YEP. Same. The firing of Lindsey was the end of the band, IMO.

Done.

That seems about right. I don’t think I’ve seen Stevie in many years and the oar time I did had too many drum solos and costume (shawl) change breaks for my taste. I saw Elton John this year and he was amazing — no karaoke, full voice, really gave his all. I don’t think FM, even if the McVies would agree, could put on that kind of show.

That’s an excellent point re seeing LB. I saw him in a small theater in 2021 and it was a great time and super reasonably priced. Given that his whole thing is studio wizardry, and he did those one man show gigs, I’m willing to forgive the backing vocals at least. Especially since Brett was so ill during the tour dates he did (including mine). It didn’t feel like it took away, whereas the things they would need to do to make FM work now musically would make it feel like karaoke.

Yeah...2018 really finished me off in terms of my continued interest in Fleetwood Mac drama.

I had already been long dismayed with Stevie and her redundant greatest hits tours. It dawned on me the other day that I hadn't seen a solo show of hers since 2005. By the time she mixed things up for the 24kg tour, I was already sick of the drama from the then ongoing CM/LB project and decided the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

I'll still go see Lindsey or a Buckingham McVie show. I had been hoping that the two would make another album, but it appears that ship has sailed given Christine's health and what appears to be almost no communication with Lindsey in quite some time.

bwboy 07-25-2022 01:25 PM

I would see FM again for sure, since I know it would be the last time I ever had the chance to see them. With or without Lindsey.

Christine I would see solo.

Lindsey I would see solo.

Stevie, no. Not mad at her, I just don’t care to see her again solo. If she changed her set list and did I Can’t Wait, Rooms on Fire, and Talk to Me, then I would. But that’ll never happen.

Hey, y'all! :wavey: I just so happened to be googling a Stevie Nicks lyric the other day, and one of the top search results was from a website I hadn't thought about in a loooooong time. ("Isn't that WeIrD?!") Amazingly, I remembered my login and password; my profile page tells me I haven't posted a word on here in nearly a decade, and not regularly since early 2006. And I was very pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite old-timers still kicking around.

Anyway! OG Ledgies may recall that I was complaining about Fleetwood Mac being a boring live band as far back as the "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell" days. Exact same setlist every show, same warhorses in the same arrangements year in and year out, even the same stage banter every night. Great to see once, but after that, why would you ever attend a concert again, particularly at the prices they charge? Then again, I haven't been remotely emotionally invested in these people since March of the Penguins was in theaters, and I greeted the news of Lindsey's recent dismissal with a chuckle and a wistful eye roll. I still listen to the albums when the mood strikes (and had a great time a few weeks back watching The Dance for the first time in ages), and that's more than enough for me.

I think the last time I saw Fleetwood Mac live was in 2003, on the Say You Will tour. Stevie I haven't seen since 2001, though my interest was recently piqued when I saw she's been performing "Wild Heart" and "Bella Donna," two of my favorite songs that I'm guessing she still has the voice for. Alas, she's not coming anywhere near New York this year except for some overpriced festival in Asbury Park.

But I did catch Lindsey's show last fall! I think I'd last seen him back in 2007, when he was promoting Under the Skin. I had a couple of friends who were interested, and I was excited to see that he had pulled out some old obscure favorites like "Soul Drifter," "I Must Go," and "Doing What I Can." Lindsey was in fine voice and put on a great, impassioned performance throughout, but in the end the experience reminded me why I don't really attend rock concerts anymore: too expensive, and more often than not, they sound like ****. Except for the brief acoustic set, it was just a big, loud, sludgy wall of sound for an hour and a half. (Then again, I saw Bonnie Raitt at the Beacon last month with one of the same friends, and she sounded fantastic. Not just her voice -- which was phenomenal -- but her whole band and however they had their amplification set up. So maybe it's just Lindsey. In which case, it's doubly disappointing that a man who has long prided himself on creating interesting, dynamic soundscapes on his records would settle for and offer up such a flat, dull-sounding show in concert.)

Anyway, with that behind me, I think I'll continue to stick to my now-usual live music diet of opera and jazz, where I can hear beautiful, interesting music, unadulterated, for at most forty bucks a pop. Sorry for writing a whole novel, and I hope those of you from the old days are all doing well! :D

You know....when I die, two of my fondest memories will be The Mirage Tour, and Buck Vie(where I made it to front row, and was pushing the dozen roses I brought to Christine, up against her toes).

I'd give anything for a BuckVie II, but I think she's just too old now. Life happens. I hope I'm wrong.

I'll be forever grateful that I got to see BuckVie in a relatively small casino room in the Cleveland area. I also saw them in Detroit at the Fox Theatre, but the smaller gig at the casino was amazing, I was only a few rows back. There was great energy in that little room.

Great to hear from you again, Jyqm! You’re one of the people whose whereabouts I wondered about.

I, too, find many rock concerts in the big arenas noisy — not always but often. I have better luck in these small theaters or outdoors. But you raise a good point about Lindsey’s control over his sound environment. If he isn’t, he should take steps to improve the clarity and dynamic range. The technology is there now.

I haven’t seen Fleetwood Mac since 2003, either. Laziness.

.

And that's why Fleetwood Mac shows are over for me after 2014. Their voices were barely salvageable then. I wouldn't tarnish a good memory with dead voices now.
