Tusk: The favorite album side

So Tusk original album had four sides. Choose one.

Side one
1. "Over & Over"
2. "The Ledge"
3. "Think About Me"
4. "Save Me a Place"
5. "Sara"

Side two
1. "What Makes You Think You're the One"
2. "Storms"
3. "That's All for Everyone"
4. "Not That Funny"
5. "Sisters of the Moon"

Side three
1. "Angel"
2. "That's Enough for Me"
3. "Brown Eyes"
4. "Never Make Me Cry"
5. "I Know I'm Not Wrong"

Side four
1. "Honey Hi"
2. "Beautiful Child"
3. "Walk a Thin Line"
4. "Tusk" Buckingham
5. "Never Forget"

I feel like I'm in a Gallup universe today. Polls-R-Us.:p

Side one is hard to beat. TAM and The Ledge, with O&O?

On Ice 04-18-2021 01:47 PM

I agree with Homer, hard to beat side one, but each side has its own gems. Over and Over, Think About Me, Save Me a Place and Sara are all worth the price of admission. I enjoy the Ledge but it's more of a gimmick to let the listener know "this ain't Rumours so don't even think about it :distress: than it was a quality song worthy of the other 4 on the side.

almost every side has at least a couple of songs i completely adore and at least one i absolutely cannot stand. so looks like i need to go with side 4 because no cannot stand ones on it.

we are all so different, it's amazing how much different tastes are in FM fandom. The Ledge and Think About Me make that side for me. among definitive standouts on the album full of standouts. i like Over and Over and i grew to love SMAP. but Sara kills it all. that's why i couldn't vote for side one.

So true Elle, that's what's made this so much fun over the years. Some songs are masterpieces to some (Sara to me is the second best song on Tusk, following Over and Over) both of which others don't like at all. Same with Oh Daddy and Sugar Daddy. Same with The Ledge and Come.... etc etc... but it would be dull if we all liked only the same songs and albums.

Back in 1979&1980 I would place Tusk, side four on my turntable just before turning off the lights for bed and gently and quietly fall asleep to the record. Often times Tusk would jar me awake but then I'd fall asleep again during Never Forget.

“The Ledge” has some of the best lyrics on the album, too.

Quote:

You can love me, baby, but you can’t walk out
Someone ought to tell you what it’s really all about
Mr. Buckingham doesn’t often get the credit for crafting a sarcastic lyric, but when he’s firing on all cylinders lyrically, he is up there with the greats, at least in patches—Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Randy Newman. In a single line, he can turn a character into a snide little ironist, a perfect bitch. The wittiest moments on Fleetwood Mac albums (such as they are) virtually always come from Lindsey, and those moments are underappreciated or not even recognized; instead, he is consistently characterized as an angry dullard who can only lash out. He once corrected Jim Ladd on the persona behind “That’s How We Do It in LA,” when Jim assumed the song was just a rich rock star taking a trendy swipe at an easy target. But Lindsey said that, no, the song is a critique on one obvious level but also an expression of love on another. And sure enough when you look at the lyrics again and listen to the whack track, you can hear that ambivalence. The proper response to a Buckingham song is, more often than not, to laugh at the musical or lyrical humor. Fans have always been too melodramatic, too serious, as if they were listening to Romeo and Juliet. Lindsey’s rock and doo-wop instincts are casual and frivolous. If you’re in that spirit, you hear his music in a different light.

For me it has always been side 4, with side three running a close second. My least favorite side is 2 (no Christine, and I’m not a fan of the way Sisters was recorded). But in actuality there are no bad sides. Just ones I like better than others.

The one-two punch of the final two songs really gets me every time. The insanely original title track that taps into a primal, tribal theme, followed by the exquisite afterglow of the “Never Forget”—that song pairing encapsulates the spirit of the entire album. The two opening tracks do the same, though, IMO, not as movingly.

Its a tough one...but side 4

jbrownsjr 04-22-2021 08:31 PM

I'll go with side 3. Side 4 is a close 2nd.

Side 1, for "Sara". That's when the album comes to life for me.

TrueFaith77 04-27-2021 08:14 AM

Side one V Side 4
1. "Over & Over" > Never Forget
2. "The Ledge" < Tusk
3. "Think About Me" < Honey Hi
4. "Save Me a Place" = Walk a Thin Line
5. "Sara" < Beautiful Child

So I guess I go with Side 4 - wow

Me too Except I had a cassette player and played a mixtape of the album with certain songs removed.

I'll hazard a guess that it was pretty much all songs by L.B.
