Food n Fitness Thread #9837483

Ok. I haven't heard from y'all as to progress lately so I'm starting another food/exercise/crap thread.

So how's everyone doing?

I got quite discouraged there for a bit, didn't stop the program, but I wasn't feeling good about it. Then on Saturday I DID splurge. Like big time. I got a pizza and made brownies. BUT I also exercised over the weekend.

This week I'm completely back on track, making healthier choices, working out. I worked out this morning - did the legs - and I am feeling fab - workouts are so much better with my handy dandy mp3 player :p

So far though I've only lost between 3 and 4 pounds.

skcin 09-26-2006 02:58 PM

Bad: Still stuck at a loss of about 5 pounds. Not excercising as much as I could be. Not totally blowing it on weekends, but cheating occasionally.

Good: Still exercising a couple times a week. Feeling more toned & limber. Clothes fit a lot better. Eating healthier - more protein, less simple starch, more fruits & veggies.

I'm still not feeling a whole lot of difference in my body - but admitedly I've not been exercising as much as I should be - only last week did I finally step it up to a pace that can be considered moderate to high.

I am eating more veggies - I'm experimenting with different ways to cook them - and trying veggies I've never really eaten before - so far so good! So I've been able to creep more into my diet.

Now I need to learn the balance of splurging on the weekend without going completely overboard.

TwistedGypsy 09-26-2006 05:01 PM

I was thinking about starting one of these.
Last week I started walking around the school I live by. Now I've started jogging some of the way, especially when there is an incline. Also running up and down steps. I'm trying to eat less. I've got to get this baby weight off!!!!!
Oh, earlier today I put on FM: The Vintage Years and danced around to Rattlesnake Shake for like 15-20 mins!! Very freeing.

CelticGypsy 09-26-2006 05:06 PM

Hate to say it but over the summer, I gained about 11 pounds:eek: We moved this summer so unpacking and remodelling several rooms in the new house has been very stressful. For the past four months we have been eating out at least once a day. Fast food is not my friend:lol: I will be on track again eating healthy meals once our kitchen is finished. Exercise has been painting walls and alot of scrubbing floors, windows, baseboards and walls. Hasn't helped too much with weight loss but definitely helps me sleep better:D

JazmenFlowers 09-26-2006 05:08 PM

I'm up to week 4 on my running program (running 5 minutes, walking 2, running 5, walking 2 for a total of about 40 minutes), but late last week I pulled muscle in my foot, so I've had to take it down a bit. my foot hurts like hell, I don't know what I did or how long it will take to recover fully, but I'm still walking. my eating is going ok, not blowing anything out of the water, but still not quite cutting back on sugars as much as I could. I've lost another 2 pounds (14 total).

by the way, Kashi Lemon Rosemary Chicken frozen dinner is a.mazing!

Good for you!

I saw that Kashi had frozen foods! I'll have to get some of those soon.

thanks. :D

yeah, I didn't know that had any until I saw them. I've only tried the one above, but it was really good. I was shocked. I could've done without the mushrooms, but there weren't that many and they aren't overpowering.

Wow I had no clue Kashi made frozen meals....but erm since I don't like their cereals..I'm wary - although I'm always looking for edible frozen meals for lunches.

Also - congrats on your loss so far Jazzy! You're doing great, but sorry about your foot - I think it's admirable that you're still doing something - so many (myself included) would have stopped exercising altogether after an injury.

Just take care of yourself though - and don't overdo it :o

I'm afraid of overdoing it. I hope I'm not. I am so motivated this time it's awesome. I haven't been this motivated since I was like 18-20, when I was 160 pounds and in amazing shape.

markolas 09-26-2006 10:20 PM

I haven't really been on a program. I was down to around 160 at the beginning of June, from a high of about 170-172. I've now crept back up to almost 170. I went to work out yesterday, but didn't make it today. :distress:

ACK! That? Is the worst. :( I feel your pain - everything torn up, dust everywhere, disroganization & clutter...remodels are a bitch. Don't get me wrong, I love remodelling & redecorating, but it gets old real quick & really throws off your schedule while you're doing it. Of course, it will all be worth it when you're done, of course. But until then, it's damn near impossible to cook a meal at home.

holla. reporting for duty in food thread #9837483!

my car is broken, so i haven't been getting to the gym. i've been walking a lot, but that's not the same. i'm going to go for a bike ride today. i've been doing really awesome food-wise. i mean, i'm almost shocked at how well i'm doing. it's been two full months now, and i really don't even need to think about what to eat anymore. yeah, i'm pretty much awesome. i don't know how much i weigh at this point, since i haven't been to the gym, but my jeans are falling off of my ass  . seriously, i went to macy's yesterday to buy a jacket, and i couldn't keep them up and i felt like a douchebag. oh! AND the lady at the counter totally complimented me on my outfit. ok, they have to do shiz like that, but i did look cute (except for the falling down pants. lol.).

uh, to summarize: i've never felt this good about myself. and i'm glad everyone else is doing well, too. oh, jaz, i'm glad you're doing a run/walk program. i just read this the other day and thought of you.

That? Is awesome, and you ARE awesome! It's such a relief when you get to the point of not having to count every little calorie or point or carb or whatever. You just know you can have such & such, or that you shouldn't have this or that. Good for you.

I've also recently realized that my pants are falling down. :o I mean, that's good but it looks like I don't know how to dress myself. The crotch on all my khakis is hanging way too low, and jeans are too baggy. Great, now I'm in better shape but I look like an A-Hole.

thanks paula. maybe you and i can start a droopy-pants-on-chicks look? yeah, didn't think so.

speaking of a-holes, i'm so mad. my mom always has to find some way to devalue any accomplishment of mine. we were talking about nutrition and shiz, and i keep trying to get her to overhaul her diet with me, and she was like, yeah, it's great what you're doing, but you have so much extra time on your hands (because i'm not going to school this semester), and you have more extra income than i do (not true), it's just so easy for you to blah blah blah. whatever, it's going to piss me off way too much to go into it.   but there's the jist. my mom's a succubus.

Ahh, you have one of those too, huh? My Mom has every excuse in the book for why she doesn't take care of herself. She always has. It is hard to exercise and eat right no matter what your schedule is! If anything, the less busy you are, the harder it is to watch what you eat!

Paula, my pants are falling off too.

ita. my mom went on and on, listening every (self-perpetuated) excuse for why she is SO much busier than everyone else she knows who can take care of themselves, and then she started crying, making me look like a big bad jackass who was telling her she couldn't eat hohos anymore and had to eat flaxmeal for the rest of her life. WAH.

the fashion industry is going to make a lot of money off of us as we drop all this weight.

skcin 09-27-2006 03:58 PM

Moms. Thank God mine isn't like that. I mean, she's not healthy & doesn't exercise & eat right, but she doesn't make me feel bad that I do it. She's proud of me, and makes no excuses for why she's overweight - she's lazy & likes to eat. :D

She cried? Damn. My Mom loves the self-pity party but I don't think I could make her cry. Maybe. But your Mom is just being manipulative. Her feelings about herself aren't your problem. Who's the Mom here, right?

Lately I've been like a drill seargent to my mom, "JUST GET MOVING" because I worry about her. She's getting so heavy and unhealthy. :( She's got sleep apnea now so she really has an excuse. It's driving me batty. It's funny because I used to do all the same stuff, make excuses, she taught me well, but now that I have figured out how to think differently I have little patience for her. Frustrating!

me too. much to my mother's chagrin, 5 yrs of therapy did me a world of good. my mom hates my (miracle worker of a) shrink. i, too, used to make excuses constantly, but i've snapped out of it. i'm not so sure my mom can or will do the same.

DavidMn 09-27-2006 05:09 PM

Well for me, I need to overhaul my eating habits for sure. On the good side, I try to walk at least 5-10 miles a week.

carrie721 09-27-2006 10:31 PM

has anyone here used resistance bands for weight training? i decided not to renew my gym membership for next month because a) i'm cheap, b) i'm super miserly with my time, and it takes too long to drive there, wait for machines, etc, and c) my car is broken and right now, i don't care if it gets fixed (see point a). i'm looking for alternatives to machines & hand weights since i don't have any machines and hand weights can be expensive. aaanyway, i bought some resistance bands today. i tried them out and got a great upper body workout and probably the best core workout i've ever done, but not so much with the lower body. any suggestions? it doesn't really have to involve the resistance bands, i just want to make sure i'm not neglecting my legs.

The bands are cool and you can use them on all joints - at least we do in this aeorbics I take. You will never bulk up on bands, but they are cool for girls as they generally do not want bulk.

Yeah, I got some. The legs/resistance mostly comes in from doing various squats while using the bands. But various squats are hard enough without the bands, so you could do that. There's the leg in front kind (not to hard, but great for the butt) then the legs side by side (hella hard, and easy to have improper form). For an alternate to legs side by side, you can do wall sits, which are hella hard as well, but don't do as much for the ol' assaroo. 90 degree angle with your legs, and just stand there with your back against the wall. A minute is hard. Then you can do calf raises, which is just up on your toes, and down, for a certain number of times, however many sets each. I like to hold my hand weights when I do calf raises, bands might be good, too. Also, I got my hand weights for 10 at Walgreen's, if you hit a cheap store you might be able to find some. :)

hmm. i don't really mind bulk, as long as it's muscle bulk. hmm. now i'm a little perplexed.

ok sweet :xoxo: . i'll have to try these. i actually have a pair of 8 lb. weights, which are good for me for delt exercises, but not for biceps or triceps or anything else. and actually, i was doing calf raises w/ the bands earlier, just to try it out, and it worked pretty well.

now i'm sad because i have to ride my bike a lot tomorrow, and it's supposed to thunderstorm all day.

Um...eight should be plenty. I use 10. They're kinda heavy. actually, per arm, I guess adding two lbs is quite a bit. But you should still use them for the ones you said you don't use them for - it can't be that light for you.

Yeah, you know, if you go out and buy a Shape magazine, you'll probably find some proper form for squats thing. It's important to use proper form, else you won't get a workout, or you'll hurt your knees, or blah.
Sorry about your thunderstorm.

they're not terribly light, i guess, but i think i got used to doing weights at the gym, and hitting failure after 6 or 7 reps or whatever.

The recommended rep failure level is 10-15. Just sos you know.

Yeah, or you could probably find it online. Exercisey people are always squatting.

Oh, that's cool. Yeah, some people are going with the heavier, less reps thing. It's probably all fine, I just didn't want you to not do those other weights at home b/c you thought it was too light. I mean, up your reps, and it will probably get heavy enough eventually.

I mean you do not want bulging muscles like guys get. You want to be toned, which the bands can do.

Also - the more reps the better - but form is everything as form isolates the muscle you are tageting with the exercise. Bad form means other muscles are being used to help that one.

Don't be trying to tell girls what kind of muscles they do and don't want.  :xoxo:

But seriously, I've always hated the thing where people think muscles on girls are not cool, and not feminine. Most girls can only bulk up to a certain point, anyway - you gotta be very serious to get like those weightlifterey girls.
I think muscle definition is what separates the Girls from the Brick Houses. "Bow chooka bow bow!"  I love looking strong.

How much definition is best? Coincidentally, the amount that I have. :p

But Strand is right - you could bulk up.

Some people I know care about that. I try to bulk up certain body parts, and debulk others - the point being to get an overall proportional, symmetrical thing going. In other words, I do extra weights on every body part except my thighs.
But I gotta say, my muscly arms were/are my favorite body part. I think they look good on girls. You know, definition?

i do want toned, but i also want definition. i want to be lean, but i also want to look strong. wait, i just realized that everything i'm going to say, amber already said. even the legs thing - my calves could use more definition, and i don't mind working out my hamstrings, but my quads are fine just the way they are ... they don't need any more help.

So true! We also moved from the city to the country. So my whole life has to be re-adjusted along with my pant size:lol:

Things will get better once I have a stove, new fridge and counterspace.

I have to try the resistance bands and just get my bum out that door and take a few walks:) I just got too lazy this summer and lost my motivation.
