Rolling Stones drummer dies at 80

Charlie Watts, who helped them become one of the greatest bands in rock 'n' roll, has died at the age of 80.

:(

A very sad day for Stones fans and rock fans in general. Charlie was one of the best. His work on some of the most classic rock songs ever written is phenomenal. I assume the band will continue on for at least the last set of dates they have planned this fall since Charlie was already not going to be playing, but it pains me to think we'll never again see his steady limbs keeping things cool calm and collected behind the circus that is Jagger and Richards.

This made me very sad. He really was a legend. Well respected.

When the Stones first appeared on UK tv with “C’mon” in 1963.
I rather liked Charlie Watts, he was a quiet calm person who nevertheless played drums.
Sat towards the back behind the many poses of Jagger, he sometimes had a sly smile at camera, I liked him a lot.
I was 13 at the time and although I adored the Beatles mainly for John, rhythm and blues were just beginning to interest me ….and the Stones had the British R and B sound of the time, more than the Fab Four.
My Mom hated the Stones and used to turn the tv off !!! When they appeared.
(The crazy world of Arthur Brown had a similar affect on her)

For a few short years I liked the Stones, loved The Beatles, listened to early Fleetwood Mac…..and then my music tastes changed..but wonderful memories of early teenage years, listening to the Stones first Album in my bedroom with the sound turned way up….
RIP

I think the Stones are the best rock band ever. Their music is so good but its not just good music. The music is so deep in what they said through their music. It so crazy but some of their biggest hits were never released as commercial singles. The lyrics and the music are so good. Mick is the ultimate front man and Keith rides shotgun. Charlie played as if he was hidden way in someone's basement. Totally not a show boat. Charlie was a jazz percussionist and he fit with the Stones perfectly. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, the Stone's signature tongue was just about everywhere. It was on everyone's T shirts, book covers, painted graffiti, etc.

I love that Christine admitted recently that Start Me Up was one of her favorite songs.

And didn’t Lindsey want Mick to use the same drum pattern as Charlie had on the Stones, Street fighting Man….
But Mick couldn’t quite manage ..

After this tour, I'd like to see Kenney Jones become the drummer for the Stones, since he was the drummer on "It's Only Rock & Roll." Charlie's gone, might as well get a drummer who actually played on a Stones hit.

Probably won't happen, though, with The Faces (Ron Wood, Kenney Jones, and Rod Stewart) set to release an album and go on tour next year. I can't help but imagine Keith filling in for the late Ronnie Lane.
