Well, if you're looking for something "uplifting," "Eyes Wide Open" is not that movie. It is brutally frank in its depiction of the orthodox society, but it does raise some interesting philosophical questions about the role of man on earth and whether it is his prerogative to indulge in earthly pleasures per the Jewish Code. Maybe it's because of living in NYC and knowing lots of Jewish people throughout my life, but I have always found the Jewish customs/traditions to be incredibly fascinating and enigmatic. As such, this movie was just as much a cultural odyssey for me as well as a tale of forbidden love. And forbidden love is forbidden love- whether gay or straight. And we all know how these kinds of stories end... :distress:

The trailer is a little bit sensationalized compared to the understated, langorous, moody tone of the movie, but you get the gist...



I don't think Thomas Gibson was exactly a household name back then either, so I'm not sure if one could call him "brave" for taking on the Beauchamp Day role; any struggling actor would have jumped at the chance. And it's not like he was humping every man walking by- he was "straight" for 95% of the series and wasn't even shown actively doing it with a guy. And as for Harry Hamlin, I think he faded into obscurity for two reasons- he couldn't act for sh*t and his looks hit the wall very rapidly and suddenly about 15 years ago. Nobody from LA Law has gone on to any major success, with maybe the exception of Blair Underwood, who continues to get lots of work (and he sold his soul to the devil or something because he looks exactly the same as he did over 20 years ago).

I will have to check out Mary Hartman on youtube! I think I was just a little bit too young to really understand that show back when it was on. I remember thinking it was really weird and boring. I suspect I would totally love it now.

I can't stop watching Mean Girls. It's such a brilliant movie, it does everything right. I think it's Lindsey Lohan's ONLY good movie. It's so totally quotable too.

Ah... perhaps... but Droopy was not diagnosed as such officially. I would say he was more likely experiencing the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, in particular, lack of motivation, anhedonia, apathy and flat affect.

BTW, Max was actually diagnosed with Aspergers in the movie.

ELVIS ON TOUR BLU RAY

I saw this when I was a child on TV, had the VHS & Laser Disc.
But now finally I have it on Blu ray, and it's awesome. Even
though WB tried to sabotage it by substituting "Don't Be Cruel"
over "Johnny B. Goode" over the opening credits. $$$ talks or
$$$ walks (walks in this case). But other than that the sound is
great and the video is good considering it was filmed in 16mm.
Buy it, and then crank it up. Elvis is in the house.

I've seen a lot of movies lately, but I just watched Neverwas, and truly enjoyed it. It was really a sweet little movie... in my eyes it hearkened back to a time of simpler moviemaking and storytelling. There was no sex or violence, it was just a story about human compassion. I just found the entire experience of watching this one to be so refreshing. :nod:

Adaptation of HG Well's science fiction classic. As the Apollo Astronaughts are set to land on the Moon in 1969, and old Man tells of how he and a Professor were first there in 1909. A made for TV movie that promises what it delivers with the expected quality (or lack thereof) of a Television Show.

How To Train Your Dragon - cute and great looking on blu-ray.

Old Boy... A graphic and shockingly entertaining revenge tale

Chaplin... Robert Downey Jr was fab

Robin Hood... Not really much better than the Kevin Costner one. Ridley Scott kinda disappoints here.

The Human Centipede - all I can say is why, why, why?

MEGAMIND - I'm a sucker for kids movies that don't involve talking animals, and I really enjoyed this one! Cliche plot, but great casting with Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt. Definitely worth watching if you are a fan of the genre.

V for Vendetta. How had I never seen this until now?!

Dead Silence... I was surprised that I actually found it a bit creepy in spots! It had the bad computer graphic elements that most horror movies nowadays insist on using.. but it also had some genuinely scary spots.

I don't know! I saw it in the theater in '06... Twice! I loved it that much. The graphic novel is interesting as well, if you haven't read it. ;)


My movie this week? Edge of Darkness. Mel Gibson, despite the fact that he's been a steaming bag of craziness lately, still has the goods. 7.5/10 on that one.

IDK either! Everyone was going on about remember remember the 5th of November the other day when I confessed to my friend that I had never seen that movie. She made me watch it and I am now in love with it. I will most def check out the graphic novel!

I FINALLY saw Boy for the first time last week! So funny :laugh: I'm not sure if people who don't live in New Zealand would get it that well though

I think some people might find the dialogue hard to understand but it's easy to relate to it eh. It's got some heart to it, and it's funny. Good combo.

just yesterday i watched prime with uma thurman and meryl streep and some guy whos name i forgot, greenberg, bloomberg.. something like that. it was okay, my girl really wanted to rent it and as i'm one of the good guys :) we did. but to be fair, it was actually quite comical and very real. so id say its recommendable.

Prime was one of the worst movies I have ever seen...and I tried really hard to like it because I love Meryl Streep. Kudos to you for being a good guy for renting it and watching with with your girl.

Bandslam - I actually somewhat liked this movie :o Even with Vanessa Hudgens in it (and she sang...but I liked the song). Something may be happening to me.

Let The Right One In - This movie was a little slow in the beginning, but it picked up. The kids in this movie are pretty good. Now I know what happens to vamps who come in uninvited.

Birthday Girl - I effing LOVE Nicole Kidman...this movie was super predictable, and it wouldn't have worked with any other two people cast as the lead roles. There's some comedy too, and Nic sports a nice Russian accent (like I would know a good one?).

Shawkshank Redemption - Seen this movie wayyyyyy too many times, and I still love it.

Who was it that saw Old Boy??? I love that movie too. I got my bf to watch it with me. The only part that made me uber uncomfortable (because I was watching it with him) was the part with the guy and his sister in the room. Now if I were to watch it with my sister (again) it would not have an impact on me at all.

Best vampire movie in a long time.
I'm curious to see the American remake.

Right now I have in the dvd of the cd/dvd package of 'The Very Best of Mick Jagger'- I've had it a few years and it's the first time I've played the dvd, which I do realize is not a movie, so what am I doing? Long interview, then a bunch of videos- Lenny Kravitz and Bono in one each, right now Mick is singing 'Don't Look Back' from SNL in the 70s with Peter Tosh.

I just watched 'The House on Sorority Row' (1983).

I watched all 3 extended Lord of the Rings movies for the first time in like 5 years but its like the 10th time I've watched them. I love those movies.

From the 'Forbidden Hollywood' 3 volume collections, I watched 'Baby Face', 'Three On A Match', 'Night Nurse' and an interesting documentary about pre-code Hollywood films made in the early 1930s, before a Mr. Breen actually got busy enforcing the 'Hays Code' which censored movies until the mid 1960s- any illicit behavior had to be 'punished' by the end of the film, once Breen was in charge. Also watched 'Life With Judy Garland- Me and My Shadows' starring Judy Davis, and two episodes from the Pioneer box sets of Garland's 1963 series. We also watched 'Paper Moon', and a bootleg dvd I bought online of the still unreleased 'Beyond The Forest'- the 1949 'so bad it's terrible'- but fun- movie that ended Bette Davis' long reign at Warner Brothers. Watched these all with the 'houseguest from Hell'- now mercifully, gone, and never to visit again. Ever. "As God As My Witness"-- even though we didn't get to 'Gone With The Wind'.
The movie watching was about the only good part of her visit. Oh, and New Year's Eve at the Mohegan Sun didn't suck- I walked out with almost $400 profit, playing penny slots! They pay the best, it seems, of the slots, the machines that give bonus spins can give you surprisingly large payoffs by playing all 30 lines, even just 1 cent per line- one bonus gave me $200 on a 30 cent bet. Played well into the new year, and left with like $393 more in my pocket than I arrived at the casino with. Gave my guest $175 once we were in the car driving home, because she had lost. We both wisely left our credit cards at home. Couldn't get near any of the food, the lines and crowds were enormous.

It's amazing what they got away with in some of those early movies.
The older I get the more interesting they become.
