Tango Questions

1) intro and 2:03-2:20 "Little Lies": Lindsey on string instrument?

2) "Seven Wonders" (1:53-2:18) keyboard sound (not slide or ac. gtr): Lindsey on string instrument?

Is it my ears are does each song have a crazy-long fade out (or gap between songs)?

"Welcome To The Room" sounds like a song from The Other Side Of The Mirror (which is where it should have gone).

Should have Jeremy Spencer'd Stevie (as in, how they relegated him to one song on Then Play On). Might have woken her up a bit. Of course, by this point the group had evolved to a three-songwriter team so that may not have been possible (plus she may have quit).

All synths.

Agreed. And it blew my mind that Christine didn't play the part live on synth, instead letting the guitarist cover it.

Because, likely it was Lindsey playing the intro on the studio version. A lot of keyboards on Tango are Lindsey. It not just the intro to Little Lies, Christine has never even attempted to play any keyboards parts to Everywhere live on stage.

Some of the keyboard parts were DX-7's and Fairlights, but also guitar synths and vari-speed guitars made to sound like keyboards.

The Chain 01-18-2022 03:45 PM

I always thought the intro and little instrumental bridge in Little Lies sounded like Lindsey’s guitar run through a synth

Didn't she on the 1987 and 1990 tour? The song was keyboard heavy those tours.

I missed Chris's playing on Tango. You get a glimpse of her now and then. The major reason I like BTM is you can hear her play on every song.

I think Rick played it. It's been so long now, my memory is fuzzy. And I don't own Tango on DVD(I'm not paying for closeups of the goat).

She even had a keyboard solo during BTM tour.

No - Dan Garfield, who was the keyboard programmer on the Tango and BTM tours, played all the keys on Everywhere and intro keys on Little Lies during those live shows. He was a Lindsey programming protege. He then toured as the keyboard player on the Out of
the Cradle tour.

Additionally, Lindsey probably doesn't get the credit for being the innovative mid 80's -- mid 90s synth programmer he was.

moon 01-20-2022 02:56 AM

Let me know...for what I read in the past, TITN started as a project which combined a work of Christine and the work for "a third album?" by Lindsey. Am I right?
I always thought that the keyboard/piano/synth parts were all by Christine, with Lindsey's collaboration. But was Lindsey who really played there? Maybe I didn't understand right, but for what I'm learning now, most of the synth partes on the album were played by Lindsey...So which parts were played by Christine? Is TITN a Lindsey's entire solo work where the rest only played what he wrote/thought/composed, and then Stevie Nicks added her own part??
More questions for the thread haha ;)

I think about that sometimes too. How many other guitar gods transitioned so fully to also being synth gods?

Tango was not just current in 1987, it was pushing the synth pop envelope. In retrospect, I guess a lot of the ideas came from his work on Go Insane - that was kind of the woodshed album for Tango.

I assume it was something like that. Among other things, he used a pitch bend. I think Chris plays the DX7 figure—the one you hear in the mid range during the verses. It’s a little broken triad pattern, very easy to play while you’re singing, so I guess she played it on tour, too. But that pentatonic intro and bridge is not a Christine thing. Rick Vito did that part on guitar on the tours he did with Mac with a rapid tremolo.

There’s a demo of “Everywhere” floating around somewhere, which was first aired on a Timothy White interview on the radio back around 1988 or 1989. You can hear the DX7 on that prominently (it sounds like a digital suitcase Rhodes and it was very common on all those sappy love ballads of the 80s). I don’t think that demo keyboard was kept on the album cut — all I can hear on “Everywhere” is a very phat pad. But as John Run noted, she didn’t even play that on tour, instead switching to maracas.

Warmth is the key description. The album cut while ok is just too programmed and stale compared to how it could have been. You add some warmth and play it a little like it is done live, and the song would have been a bitter hit IMHO. Lindsey synthed it too much. It almost has a robotic feel to it at times.
I agree and vote for more warmth.

Everywhere is wonderful work of pop music craftsmanship and perfectly fitting vocal performance. The fact that it is the 3rd most streamed song in the Fleetwood Mac catalog is further evidence it is one of the most enduring songs of the Rumours era band and has identified with a generation of music listeners who are likely a different (younger) demographic than the make up of this forum. This list below is from the chartmaster comprehensive streaming database updated through January 31, 2021. A new update will likely be coming soon.

Not a coincidence that the top songs were all used in commercials many years after their initial release that got them downloaded in the modern age.
Not taking anything away from the songs but I just see commercials in the top 5

Agreed that’s it’s a piece of great craftsmanship and arrangement. I’m not surprised to see it at #3 on the band’s streaming. The vamp at the end (where she plays the melody to Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini) is irresistible. But I do prefer the warmth of her voice and the guitar on the demo.

Love that Oh Daddy is on that list, too! That one DOES surprise me a bit, given its melancholy. And it’s above SYLM, OMH, or Hold Me—shocker!

Stevie even said herself that Oh Daddy was her favorite Christine song. That's reason enough to have it streaming in your top 10 list.

Maybe if Stevie and Mick weren't drugged out of their minds, he wouldn't have had to do it all?

When did John get sober? I forget...

She was a big star in 1986. You're lucky she showed the few days that she did.

Seriously, she was so checked out of the creative process. Didn't she Fed Ex her brilliant song When I see you again to the band when she was on the RAL tour.

Her note read:
Here. Do something with this.

To make the final cut, Lindsey edited out 5 whatsamatta babies and sang the ending and slapped it on the album

When you show up and do a vocal like this......what do you do? You tend to lean forward and find clever ways to imitate her voice

LUCKY $he showed up? The big $tar should have left the band and did her own thing for good.

I don't hate Wassamatta Baby as much as the rest of you. Granted it's a bad vocal, but Lindsey does save it, IMO.

John initially got sober during TITN. He fell off the wagon by The Dance. I think he’s had periods of sobriety and relapse. Not uncommon.

I think (hope) the cancer scare was the final straw with his drinking, but who knows?

Thanks.

I would bet nearly anything it was Lindsey. It has Lindsey's signature all over it.

On a related note- I think Lindsey would be jealous of me, for the first time in my life.... The Beach Boys are hanging out at my watering hole(well, one of my watering holes) in Nashville. They just finished their show, across the alley(at the Ryman).
