What's the dumbest thing anybody has ever said to you about Fleetwood Mac?

(Just to avoid bashing, let's restrict this to real-life rather than Ledge board encounters.;) )

For me, I've heard:

Are you sure Chris didn't used to be a man? (while watching Mirage concert video)

I know for a FACT that Stevie is a high priestess/witch.

You like Fleetwood Mac? That's as bad as liking classical music!

Rumours is really that well-known?

Stevie has got to be a lesbian if she writes all these songs about women.

How can you like her look? She wears rags.

Stevie is fat and old, how can you buy her albums?

I like that Dreams song Christine sings about Mick.

Stevie Nicks did too start Fleetwood Mac.

How lame, Fleetwood Mac does a Santana song on this album you've got!

Got anything to add to this list of dumb-ass non-fan quotables?

wetcamelfood 05-01-2003 06:45 PM

DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB

That: "SYW is the first full studio album by FM in 15 years".

Those fools, don't they know that TITN was out in 1987 and not 1988? (BTM & Time? What are they?) :)

This one wasn't supposed to BE related to Fleetwood Mac, but of course I related it to them:

Two guys walking behind me were talking about this girl who cuts hair, and her name was Rhiannon. The guy questioned "Brianna," and the other said "no, Rhiannon." Then, "Whoever thought of the name Rhiannon, that's dumb."

beach~gypsy 05-01-2003 08:13 PM

(in southern voice): "Fleetwood Mac? Oh yeah, I like him!"

wondergirl9847 05-01-2003 08:14 PM

I love my mama, but...

My mom asked me "Who's she?" when I told her I wanted Lindsey's song "Soul Drifter" played at my funeral. LOL I love my mama, and she has never heard of Lindsey, but I was like "Um, mom, Lindsey is a GUY!!!!!!!" LOL

Are you obsessed with them or what? (YES, YES I AM!!)

Lindsey is gay. (Coming from a jealous co-worker  )

DownOnRodeo 05-01-2003 08:20 PM

Too many to remember..

"Oh, I didn't realise there were two women ..." (This from a self-professed fan of sorts)

And riding high on the FM ignorance charts: "Lindsay Buckingham".

misterbug 05-01-2003 09:27 PM

"wait, stevies the girl and lindsey's the guy??"

estranged4life 05-01-2003 09:53 PM

#1 dumbest saying I've heard...

was when someone honestly asked me this ONE VERY STUPID question:

"Fleetwood Mac? Is that a burger?"

...Nuff said, Brian "See, I told ya it was VERY STUPID" J.

ShangriLaTroubl 05-01-2003 09:56 PM

"Stevie Nicks? Ohhhh the curtain lady...the one who draps herself in curtains!!"

"I heard Stevie is dating Justin Timberlake, I always knew he was gay!"

my gov't teacher had the radio on and a stevie song came on and she said.."Which band did Stevie Nicks play in? Styxx??"
---i gladly informed her!

When my kids were little they always asked why is Stevie the girl and Lindsey the boy? That doesn't make any sense, mommy.

macmar71 05-01-2003 10:35 PM

When articles get Lindsey's year of birth wrong and making him older.
An ex-friend told me when I first got into the Mac that Stevie and Mick were on the cover of an album and they were naked (wrong combo) as I found out it was Buckingham Nicks, I was amazed to find out Lindsey had facial hair at one time as I was into them at the Mirage era.

Josh2003 05-01-2003 11:35 PM

I was getting my senior pictures taken last September, and I took all of my FM/Stevie albums for a pose (yeah I'm a nerd). The photographer looked at my Buckingham Nicks LP, pointed to Stevie, and said "Did you know she used to sing with Starship?" Rather than waste my time, I simply said "Oh really?"

What makes this story so funny is that the same photographer said the EXACT same thing to Johnny Stew when he had his senior pictures done (over ten years earlier!). Sorry to date you there, Brian. :D

Jason T. 05-01-2003 11:57 PM

Here we go again...

My top five "Non--fan quotes.":

"Stevie, who's he???"

"Fleetwood Mac, aren't they a country group?"

"Aren' t they all dead?"

"Stevie Nicks, oh yeah, we cannot listen to her music since she is a witch..." (When you live in Amarillo, Tx---you hear a whole bunch of opinions like this. As soon as I'm eighteen, I'm moving to Vegas and away from the non-Fleetwoodmacism.)

"Lindsey, which one is she?"

*LOL*
It's ok, Josh... no one else is dating me right now! ;)

We must have that "tri-state connection" thing going on again, because I saw the title of this thread, and I was going to post *my* story about the photographer, and then I saw you posted yours!

I just think it's hysterical that all these years later (and after I corrected him three times during the shoot), he still insists Stevie was with Starship! Ah well, what can you do!

Another dumb, but funny, Mac anecdote....
in my junior year of high school, our art class had a student teacher. It was pretty common knowledge that I was a huge Mac fan, so he walked over to me one day to tell me how much he's always loved Fleetwood Mac.
And in an attempt to impress me, he said he even owns a vinyl copy of the very first Mac album Stevie Nicks ever appeared on.
So I said, "ahh, 'Fleetwood Mac'... that's such a great album!"

But he corrects me and says, "No, the first Fleetwood Mac album she was ever on, was 'Mystery To Me.'"

I replied, "Uhm, I don't mean to argue, but 'Mystery To Me' featured Christine McVie and Bob Welch... Stevie and Lindsey Buckingham didn't join the band until 1975, and their first album with them was just titled 'Fleetwood Mac.'"

So from there he goes into a long spiel about the 'Mystery To Me' album, what the cover looked like, naming the songs (which he actually had correct), etc., and then he said, "see... Stevie Nicks was on that album."

I told him, "I guess I was mistaken," and left it at that.

I wonder if he ever pulled the album out again just to double-check!

goldustboi 05-02-2003 05:42 AM

"Lyndsey? Who's she?"

"Stevie? Who's he?"

"I thought they were for old people"

"Wasnt Stevie Nicks banished from America for being a witch?"

Sad.

HA! Don't know where THAT came from but I think I do remember back in the late 70's there was a rumor that SN was having a fling with Paul Kantner (from Jefferson Airplane/Starship) so who knows, maybe it means you sung in band if you had an affair with one of it's members? :)

By then, Fleetwood Mac will have a weekly gig at -- where else? -- the Bellagio.

Grainuaile 05-02-2003 09:11 AM

Said by my mother [who was apparently living under a rock in the 70's]:

"Stevie Nicks? Isn't he the lead singer for Aerosmith?"

DrummerDeanna 05-02-2003 10:20 AM

LOL...I often think my mom must've been living under a rock in the 70's as well...as she and my grandma still seem to pronounce Stevie wrong....I can't phonetically spell it lol...

I always here the

Stevie...who's he? or Stevie Nicks...yeah...I like him!

And Lindsey not being a woman throws non-macians off....

And of course I've met several people who INSIST that Stevie Nicks is a witch...oddly they can't name more than two songs, but dammit they know for sure she's a witch lol....

Someone once told me a horrid cocaine story...claiming that his best from was cutting an album in the same place as The Mac..this was in the late 70's...or early 80's and she walked into a room and well...saw first hand where Stevie was uh putting the cocaine....sounds bogus to me....ya think she'd be more discreet lol...but whatever...

OOH! My favorite...someone once told me that Stevie Nicks is a racist....lol....

I just laugh now or just do the "oh really?" thing...and let it go...I got too tired arguing with all these people who know everything about a band/person they know nothing about lol...:D

barb 05-02-2003 11:00 AM

D

Check out the Okay, confess post for more on the cocaine rumor.

It's funny how everybody has some friend who supposedly knows someone who knows Stevie & that she's racist, etc.
A student insists that another student's mother was her manager & was fired, & that Stevie was horrible & mean. Please.

The rumors testify to her star power. Everybody claims to know what she's really like.

I think Stevie has worked with so many people, you could play Six degrees from Stevie Nicks with anybody in the business. At the same time, many people can't name her songs.

LOL...I did that...and am glad to know that I'm not the only one who has been handed this rumour....so apparently it's a pretty well circulated rumour then....lol....and this guy was like...yeah...my friend saw it all first hand...lol...

tamaraluvsFM 05-02-2003 11:39 AM

This is so funny! Some people just have no clue about the Mac. Anyhow..here is some of the things I have heard:

"I thought Stevie was the one with the Fro in that pic"

"Fleetwood Mac? I did not know you were into New Age music"

"Aren't they all dead yet?" (yes this one I did punch the guy..lol)

"Their music sucks" (yes once again I threatened violence..lol) To me that was the dumbest line as we ALL know they rock.

"Fleetwood Mac? Never heard of them..."

The more correct phrasing would probably be:
Who hasn't she been rumoured to have had "a fling with" in the '70s?!?

I think it was Cher who once said (and I'm paraphrasing here), "If I slept with every man they claim I've been with, I'd never have time to get out of bed!"

sara1998 05-02-2003 02:44 PM

"Stevie Nicks dosen't bathe, and hasen't for years. She's a witch, you know??"

This was seriously said to me right before I went to The Dance. I laughed my ass off, especially after he said, "OH, since you will be so close to the stage, I'll bet you could smell her."

I am not kidding....

When the Rumours DVD-A had just come out, I went to Tower Records and asked if they had it. The girl by the counter asked me to write down the name of the band and album on a piece of paper so she can type it into the computer. I did it and then to my astonishment she told me that they "have nothing in stock by that artist". I said "What..?? Are you sure?"...and she said "yes, take a look". She pushed the monitor to my direction and I saw this is what she'd typed in:

ARTIST: RUMOURS

ALBUM: FLEETWOOD MAC

stevierocks87 05-03-2003 09:08 AM

okay...this happened just last week...

a guy in my chemistry class who got the VB of FM album for his birthday asked me "Does Stevie sing Go Your Own Way?" and "who is that guy with the big hair in the pictures? He looks gay."

 ah well, i guess there was a time when i was pretty Fleetwood Mac ignorant. But not quite that so.

LOL...that is SO funny!!! You know..that same line...a friend of mine and I were in my car listening to the Dance and after that line she was like, "Who's your Boogy-man? What the hell does that mean?" lol...I died laughing....

darklinensuit 05-03-2003 01:59 PM

I make it a point never to watch FM videos with the folks anymore. They just don't get the experience.
I once watched Mirage concert with my mom years ago, & as the band lets loose at an instrumental part near the end of a song ---I'm trying to remember if it's The Chain, SOTM, or EOTW --- Stevie does a spin & her skirt flies up gracefully. My mother frowns and says, "You can see the tops of her panty hose." I rewound, & sure enough, there they were on her uppermost thighs. I still look for them when I watch this concert.

tommer 05-03-2003 02:32 PM

tommer: LOOK!!! STEVIE NICKS IS ON TV!!!
dad: oh... is she still recording? is she an active artist?
tommer: sure she is.
dad: how old is she?
tommer: she was born a week from you. she IS kinda old.

this exact stupid conversation has been held at least 20 times, the last time was just yesterday, when i happened to catch the chris isaak show featuring stevie at my parents' place. it's becoming really boring with him.

Vianna 05-03-2003 04:56 PM

is when I'm asked, as I have been often,

Fleetwood WHO?

and I get that one about what? Stevie's not the guy? a lot too

Sarah 05-03-2003 05:38 PM

a friend and i were listening to GYOW.. he was like, "I love this song!!" ..so we start discussing the song. A few moments later:

"that's a BOY singing?"
me: "yes."
"he must be really gay."
me: "what's that supposed to mean?"
"he sings like a f-ing GIRL!"

idiot.

" Stevie and Lindsey were married, did you know that?"

" Lindsey was born in 1947, so he's 55 right now"

" LindsAy" I HATE WHEN PEOPLE IN MAGAZINES spell it wrong!! Do their homework.

" Stevie is a witch"

" Stevie got really fat and old"

Today I heard" Stevie looks 30 because she wears all the make up...that guy Lindsey looks old, he can't wear make up though"

I just nod.

I told my cousin who is around 40 that I wanted to go see Fleetwood Mac in Atlantic City in May. He said "oh, is HE coming to that area again in the fall?"
