How would you feel about no more solo Stevie albums?
Based on the revelatory comments by Lindsey and now Stevie about doing a big tour then going back into the studio... how would you guys feel if Stevie gave her songs to more FM albums rather than some solo album producer? At least for a while. I mean, I'm sure even if they only did Fleetwood Mac till theyre sixty-five, Stevie'd still be putting out something or other in the solo vein.
Before you answer too quickly please consider such factors as how Lindsey has got her voice so good (due in no small part to he competition thing they have together, I'm guessing), and that it seems she'd probably get a good 9 or so songs per album anyway. |
Well, as much as I love Stevie Nicks solo...I have all of the albums, including two copies of "Street Angel" (one being the Japanese version)...I do think that Lindsey is her best producer.
Now, I think I'd like to hear all of tracks from the new album in order to really make a final decision. However, there's just something different about her when she's in Fleetwood Mac...different in a good way. I think the "competition" with Lindsey thing has a lot to do with that. I think she really does try harder, to rock harder, in Fleetwoood Mac. Like I said, I have to hear this record first. But, judging from "Smile At You"...:D Hey, as long as she's still singing and writing new songs I'm cool with anything really. Susie :wavey: |
I love Stevie's solo stuff, and I'm so grateful that we have it. But I'm sure I'd love it all twice as much if Lindsey had participated on it. *Nothing* beats the two of them when they're together. I hope they are serious about putting out another album or three, but what would be even more awesome to me would be BN II, with some co-written songs on it. (I know, I'm dreaming...  )

Good question! I would love for them to release another Fleetwood Mac album, and in fact many many more. There's no doubt about it, Stevie does shine when she's in FM.
That being said, there is something more 'raw' about Stevie's solo work that appeals to me. FM is often accused of overproducing their material, and whether that's a good or a bad thing is neither here nor there, because heavy studio production simply IS the classic FM sound, with a few exceptions. But when I listen to Stevie's solo albums, with the exception of OSOTM, which I believe was overproduced, I really do think that less is more. And it's that raw quality of being stripped down that I would miss the most... like Outside the Rain. Take a look at what's happened with Smile At You. At lot of people seem to have the opinion that production has ruined the song. (I am not of that opinion, however). I can say for sure that Smile At You would have never turned out that way had it appeared on a solo album. Even Say You Will, with all those vocal layers that are typical of FM... her solo work doesn't have that. It's just Stevie and occasionally someone else. Lucky for me, I think that I appreciate both facets equally. So I guess you could say that I'm greedy because I want both! More Fleetwood Mac and more solo work! And that goes for Lindsey too (if he can possibly expedite his work!) |
Well...as long as she is still singing and stuff..it's all good...Linds obviously brings out the best in her musically..the difference between this and TISL is astonishing...
|
I've always thought that Stevie is at her best within the confines of Fleetwood Mac, (and after Bella Donna, I thought her solo career was so incredibly intrusive to the progress of Fleetwood Mac, I really started disliking her) so, I would be MORE than happy if she s**t-canned her solo career.
|
I wouldnt like it if Stevie didnt put out solo material. Some of my most favourite recordings of her are the way old demos, demo's she recorded at her house, studio, etc. While I agree that Stevie's solo career may have impeded FM's growth to a certain extent... you have to remember she was working 24/7 in the 80's bouncing between solo & FM. Thats a lot on any one person and I feel she has the talent and should pursue her solo career.
I also feel Lindsey was her best producer and collaberator and it'd be great if they did a BN2 and did a small tour in intimate venues. Ok I can dream! :D |
simply stated
i've always liked Stevie's work in FM more than her solo stuff.
So.....i would root for more FM stuff rather than solo stuff....i think i've gotten my fill of Stevie solo. we've got about 60 solo Stevie songs released and only about half of that for FM material so i think we need to catch up on the FM stuff....i think at this point in time they should both just stick to FM...they have enough room now with Christine gone to put as much stuff out as possible. plus, if stevie works on a solo record and then goes back to FM for another record i think we all know we won't see FM for another 6 years and i can't wait that long....i don't think they should either. they're not youngsters anymore. |
personally I like the fact that Stevie puts out solo stuff in between FM albums, because let's face it, Lindsey takes forever to complete an album.
Stevie has said in interviews that when she's with FM, she works on her solo stuff and when she's solo, she's working on FM stuff. which is fine with me because I enjoy both sides of the mirror... And I also enjoy the "raw" quality that can be found in her solo work. I also think an artist needs other influences to expand and grow, which Stevie has never been shy about working with TP and the Heartbreakers, Prince, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Kenny G., Sheryl, Natalie to name the "famous" ones. And this exposure spills back into FM. For example John Shanks, he's got some production credits on SYW and he was first introduced to us thru TISL. I guess Lindsey really liked what he did with Planets of the Universe. This also explains why she has been able to bring so much to the Say You Will table...and it seems to me with Lindsey's new-found appreciation, she's seems to be getting the respect and song-space on this FM album she has always deserved. but after this tour, when Lindsey, Mick decide they need to spend more time with their families, I believe Stevie will be working on her next solo project, still perfecting and working at her craft. and it's all good for me :wavey: |

Lindsey's already been quoted as saying that as soon as the tour's over, they're going to jump back in to do a follow-up album. But, then again, that's a year or so away, anything can happen. |
Re: How would you feel about no more solo Stevie albums?

i'd be VERY upset if she dismisses her solo career. but as far as i know she's under contract with warner for 2 more solo albums, so there's no need to worry :D |
Stevie solo or with the Mac, it doesen't matter to me, just as long as she keeps on recording and putting her stuff out there.

My thoughts...
I love Stevie in FM..I love her FM songs the best...and I think Lindsey brings out the BEST in her as a producer!! I love Edge of 17, Stand Back, POTU, Rooms on Fire, etc...but I think for the most part, her solo albums aren't as strong as if you took ALL her FM songs and made a couple of albums. JMHO. There are ALOT of Stevie solo songs I don't listen to much and don't care for, but there is only ONE Stevie FM song I don't care for...so...I'd be ECSTATIC at her staying with Lindsey and FM and doing songs with them.:thumbsup:

I want both! But if forced to choose, I'd say Stevie in FM. That's the best of both worlds - Lindsey and Stevie combo.
|
I can appreciate both Stevie in FM and Stevie solo. I really like the Stevie/Lindsey drama in FM and how they play to each other. I also think that Lindsey is the best producer of Stevie's music.
However, I really would like Stevie to do another album solo. I do like her solo tours and it would break my heart if she didn't do HAEWAY again to close out her show. Also, I would worry to some extent that there was alot of good material that Stevie wouldn't get out because of the "approval" process inherent in FM. For example, two of Stevie's best songs (IMO) from the 1970's - Silver Springs and Planets/No Light were not released when they were written and never really saw the light of day until practically 20 years later! She has such a great backlog of work and it would really be a shame to not hear as much of it as possible! |
I'm not taking these recent comments too seriously. I can't remember which one, but I remember in '92 when LB & MF appeared on some political news show (pushing the Clinton ball appearance deal that was to happen that night), whoever it was that was interviewing asked Lindsey straight out if he was to continue in FM given all of the "bad feelings" between LB & MF at the time (e.g. "Wrong" etc.) and it was pretty obvious he wasn't happy about being asked that and he felt compelled to say "I don't see any reason why I shouldn't continue working with FM" (or something to that effect) and we now know that this was not to be, at least at that time.
It's hard to say about if there'll be more LB solo stuff in the future but I'm sure they'll be more SN solo stuff. Look at it this way, SN has always said she needs more avenues to get her music out through besides just FM. I thought that was one of the reasons (spoken in "interviews" that many do seem to take seriously anyways) as to why she had left FM before, so why would it all of the sudden be OK by her standards to just have a "few" songs on FM albums be "enough"? I mean OK, Christine isn't there now so instead of a third, it's now half of the material, but going by the volume of material that she wanted to get out there before, "half of a FM album" was apparently not enough then so... Just some thoughts. :) John |
While I love Stevie's solo work especially on her last album and the ones from the past bring up fond memories, I would say as of now I lean more towards her work with the Mac. Her work on Tusk was some of the best songs she has ever done and Lindsey does put great touches and ideas into her songs. I would love to see them do some of her demos like The Dealer and If You Were My Love:]
Lindsey on the other hand, I would love to see another solo album from him, OOTC was fabulous and from what I heard with the GOS demos, that was also shaping up to be another gem, IMO. Either way, I welcome new music from them! |
Ooohhh the Dealer... that'd be great with her more mature voice.
|
Stevie has said recently that she would be going back into the studio to work on a solo record as soon as this is finished. So which is it? Simultaneous?
|
no!!!!!
Lindsey WAS her best producer, I used to think that even after TISL I think but I've changed my mind now, I think that he's amazing with her and they work really well together but her solo albums aren't fleetwood Mac albums and I like that difference.
There's a different vibe to them, it gives her a great chance to sound different imo. I think TISL is a better album than SYW and it's the production and vision that brought those demos(and new songs) to that level. I think she has more input in her own solos than on FM records and it works well. BUT, I have a song for Stevie to sing, I'd love if FM did it :wavey:s to his dream hopefully in the future.:p |
Love Stevie with FM, but I prefer her solo. I've never felt she needed Lindsey as producer or arranger, though she does a better version of Landslide when with him.
I agree that TISL is a better album than is SYW. I love Gypsy, 7 Wonders, and Rhiannon, but my favorite Stevie songs are solo ones. (I feel so alone, ha ha.) - Jake |
I want Stevie and Lindsey together as much as possible, so it wouldn't bother me a bit!
-Sharon |
i don't think i'd mind that much if stevie didn't put out any more solo albums...as long as she was still doing FM stuff. as much as i like her solo stuff, i think that FM is better.
|
Since that would be the only way that they (Stevie and Linds) could be alone and foolish...I would say that we can expect more FM albums and I would be fine with that, b/c in FM as it exists now, what we get is essentially 2 solo albums, a Stevie and a Lindsey. As long as that remains the case, I will be fine with Stevie in FM only.
|
The success of SYW will make her more viable as a solo artist following up the success of TISL and I am sure Reprise wants another solo album from her so I imagine we will see at least one more SN solo album.
|
The arrangements on her solo albums are always so bland; nothing really kicks you in the teeth.
Of course, the Mac arrangements are beginning to sound bland, too, so maybe it's six of one & half a dozen of the other. I just get so bored listening to her live bands these days -- they are so generic & so studied & so bereft of any personality. I actually walked out of a couple of her concerts in 2001 because the bands were so mainstream -- it was like an arena full of backup musicians falling on your head. I'd rather hear Fleetwood Mac get all electric & incendiary & rough. I prefer to hear the songs worked over rather than worked out. "The Dance" was a step back in that regard. |
I agree to some respects, but TISL IMO was her top album since Bella Donna, if not her top album all together.
|
I want more Stevie solo albums!
As much as I love Stevie's work in Fleetwood Mac I'd still want her to continue in her solo career. She especially needs to work with John Shanks again...oh yeah!!
And how else can you get a dozen or more Stevie songs at once! :) Joe |
No more Stevie albums? Krikey, i'd be a sad girl. :(
