Good news!

It sounds like it's a long one, but any chance you might be able to type it up and post it? We'd all love to read it. :D

wondergirl9847 02-15-2003 06:44 PM

Les 02-15-2003 06:46 PM

Thank you Brian. Looking forward to the song reviews.

My overall thought is that he's still as humble as ever. ;)

Johnny Stew 02-15-2003 06:50 PM

Thanks a million for typing all of that out, Brian!

I definitely need to seek this issue out.

I'm also looking forward to hearing what Lindsey had to say, in regards to "Thrown Down," Not Make Believe," and "I Am Waiting"... which is, of course, a song I don't think any of us are familiar with.
At least not by that name.

Thanks again!

"I Am Waiting"....

This is from the cover story also:

"Although the song selection and running order of the new Fleetwood Mac album was up in the air as we went to press, I was treated to a special preview of the planned two CD release in the Warner Brothers offices last December. Later on, Buckingham garciously detailed the 6-string highlights of some of his favorite songs. We can only hope that the final version of the album lets you hear these gems."-AT

I Am Waiting-"The straight sound is a Baby Taylor with gut strings," says Buckingham. "Then I played the same part through a very ethereal patch on the Roland VG-8. I like the idea of mixing different textures witi a single guitar part."

Ugh... kind of heartbreaking that WE'RE not going to hear all of these "gems."

Johnny Stew (still crossing his fingers for some kind of bonus disc)

estranged4life 02-15-2003 07:02 PM

"Gift Of Screws", etc...

Gift Of Screws-"I don't think I've ever done this on a record before, But I doubled my lead part with my voice on this song-just like George Benson. It's an interesting device, and I did a bit more of it on the song "Miranda".

Thrown Down-"It sounds like I used a high-strung guitar here, but I've also been known to do an old Les Paul trick to re-voice my guitar parts. For example, I'll track a part with the tape machine slowed down a half step, and the part will sound seeter and more "miniature" when the deck is run at normal speed. You have to be careful not to slow down the machine too much, though, because the guitar ca sound wimpy. I also did this trick on the chorus riff, which was triled with little speed tweaks on either side of the correct pitch."

Not Make Believe-"The shimmering tones are courtesy of a doubled part and the speed-tweak trick. What you're hearing is 'natural' phasing."

Bleed To Love Her-"The backwards guitar is my Strat (!) through a Lexicon delay, and manipulated with a volume control."

Skylark 02-15-2003 07:14 PM

Doesn't he mean a four piece?

At any rate, I'm going to try to find this, as soon as the ice storm here ends. :-) I have to say, I'm glad they chose "Thrown Down" instead of "Not Make Believe" to keep.

BTW, is the photo from the inside of the mag similar to this one? http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/slphotos/SnLLive.html

He's referring to the band in terms of guitar, bass, & drums, as opposed to guitar, keyboards, bass & drums.
Stevie's done the same thing in articles from 2001 and 2002, where she refers to them now as a "power trio," because the fellas are the playing musicians.

Now that we know for certain that it was recorded, I'm pretty disappointed that "Not Make Believe" was omitted, because I felt the demo had a lot of potential.

We might still hear these "leftovers" though. :)

I suspect he's speaking instrumentally, so he's talking about the three boys minus Christine. As I recall, even Stevie referred to the band as moving to a "power trio" during some of her TISL interviews.

BTW, that's exactly the picture that came to mind for me too when Brian described it.

Woops posted at the same time as you Johnny! ;-)

Thanks very much for posting the interview Brian! It's much appreciated!

The moment I saw your post this afternoon I went out to see if I could find the magazine but Tower Records still had the February issue. I'll undoubtedly be checking every day!:)

Wldhrt315 02-15-2003 10:30 PM

Regarding the songs that Lindsey mentioned that we seem to know aren't going to be on the FM "single" CD, I feel comfortable saying that after the album comes out and a little times passes someone will leak the SYW sessions with versions of these unreleased tunes. It seems to happen to this band, undoubtedly it will comtinue.

DownOnRodeo 02-15-2003 11:48 PM

Either that or a FOLLOW-UP ALBUM, depending on the sucess of SYW!!!! ;)

estranged4life 02-15-2003 11:58 PM

I think we...

may see a solo album mainly because of the statement Lindsey said in the interview:

"At that time, there was a big push to do The Dance tour, so I put all my new stuff on the shelf throughout 1996. After the tour, I went back in and finished what was going to be my next solo album. This was about the time that Warner Brothers was preparing to change a lot of staff, though, and I was a little worried that my record would get buried. I felt strongly that it was the best solo thing I had done, so I thought, "Well, I'll just wait."......I wasn't sure that I was going to use my stuff for a Fleetwood Mac album, but we just decided to start cutting some of Stevie's songs while I waited for for the new regime at Warner to come in."

Maybe he is waiting now for the FM thing to run it's course since he had to wait for Warner's regime change...Or he may (Would be cool though...) release an album right at the end of the FM tour...Brian J.

estranged4life 02-16-2003 12:02 AM

Yep...

Thats the "odd pose" picture by Joe Sia...Thanks Nancy, Brian J.

sodascouts 02-16-2003 12:25 AM

The Odd Pic

Looks to me like he's about to do some kind of exaggerated- stage-thrust.

estranged4life 02-16-2003 12:32 AM

The picture...

in the magazine is either 1 frame before or after the one you posted earlier Nancy (Linds has his mouth closed and ya cant really see Stevie's mouth at the mic), But I think everyone gets the picture...lol...Brian J.

Fingers crossed. Either that or a follow up FM album (which frankly I would prefer for the exposure it will give him and the free creative reign he has anyway). I'm sure I'm not the only one that can't see Down On Rodeo being released as a B-side to SYW, or even worse, illegitimately leaked after the fact to no fanfare. I have a sparkle of hope that Lindsey has shelved this for a future solo effort, because it is 'too good' to throw away.

Brian - you are so good to type up ALL of this stuff!!! :wavey:
Can't wait to read the Red Rover remarks!!!

estranged4life 02-16-2003 01:30 AM

"Red Rover"...

Red Rover-"The speed and aggressiveness in my fingerpicking is a big part of what I have to offer these days. Here, the very percussive, fingerpicked part was doubled, and then I slowed down the tape machine and bounced the double to another track. This allowed me to control the doubled part with a fader, and I moved the fader back and forth in time with the music. It almost sounds like some of that gating stuff they did in the 80's-that on-off kind of thing-except this method is more organic. My idea was to create some negative space to take the place of the drums, and I had to slow the tape machine way down to get the rhythmic manipulations as precise as possible. It's all about being in the pocket."

Murrow Turning Over In His Grave-"The very strange-sounding distortion part is based around a cluster of atonal vocals. You get five, six, or seven different tones together that are out of tune with each other, and it just becomes this arrgh kind of sound. I think there might be some slide in there, too. This song has elements of something quite traditional and recognizable in an almost generic sort of way, yet it departs from that at the chorus when you're suddenly into this weird Brian Wilson/Yardbirds acid thing. I would never want to do something that was generic all the way through."

wondergirl9847 02-16-2003 02:03 AM

No kidding!!

He ain't kiddin'!! LOL That is my fave song of the GOS demos!! That song has touched me in the way that ISA has...not on the same level, but at a different level....hard to explain. The lyrics apply to my life (or what I have seen of lyric interpretation! LOL) and his emotive singing is breathtaking. That will undoubtedly still be my fave song on the new album....unless it's been changed ridiculously dramatically!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! :distress:

estranged4life 02-17-2003 05:39 PM

Karen 02-19-2003 12:46 PM

Brian-

Thank you so much for typing and posting that article! It certainly explains a lot of things about what happened to his solo album, and what was taking so long to release it (not that an explanation was needed or anything).

I hope the songs that A.T. mentioned will be in the final version. I'm looking so forward to this new album.

Thanks again, Brian!

-Karen :)

I live in the USA and subscribe to the magazine and I don't have it yet.

This is kind of frustrating.

Hey Seteca, how's it going? How's the Model One playing coming along?
I like mine better every day. I'm going to Calif. next week, I might stop in on RT. I'll give him your best.

chiliD 02-19-2003 06:06 PM

Me, neither...in fact, just got my March issue with Chrissie Hynde & Adam Seymour on the cover just a couple of weeks ago. Seems I'll have to wait a couple of more weeks (at least) until this one shows up. I'm glad that GP shrinkwraps their magazines. At least, I know my mailman isn't reading them before I get them!!

I've had my Model 1 since December 1998, and I keep finding new tricks with the EQ to use for different sounds. Maybe someday I'll get up the nerve to mess with the rotating pickup...for the last 4+ years I've just left it the way RT set it.

estranged4life 02-19-2003 06:13 PM

What's funny is...

I've been receiving issues for the past few years...The only problem is I never signed up for the subscription...lol...For some reason I receive my GuitarPlayer issues before even some subscribers do. Brian J.

"I Am Waiting"

Has anyone noted that "I Am Waiting" is a Rolling Stones song? It's from their "Aftermath" album, and I know it from when it was played in "Rushmore" (although it wasn't on the soundtrack). Sounds like this might have been the Stones-related surprise Mick promised... Too bad it didn't make the cut. It really sounds like a song Lindsey could have done a lot with.

Bill

Hi!:wavey:

Hope you're very well! I'm glad you're enjoying your M1 so much, me too! At the moment, my "tone of choice" is boosting the central midrange by maximum, whilst leaving the volume on about 2/3 and the master tone control at full. I use that in conjunction with a SD-1 placed before the FX loop (incl. compression) and I get this awesome, thick bluesy tone....almost identical to the sound of David Gilmour's '57 RI Strat with the EMG SPC & EXG controls.

For clean playing, try leaving the magnetic/piezo blender at the central position, boost the high bass/very low mids by about half the maximum amount, roll the tone control back by about a half and put the master volume to about a half. Then leave gain on the amp at 1, increase the bass to about 7 and the mid to 9 or 10. It sounds like....a dream!!!

Haha....yea, be sure tell him I said hey!:D

:wavey: :wavey: :wavey:
