Why do so many people hate this song? I honetly think it's one of Stevie's better later-80's songs (or was it 90's?). Anyway, don't you just love how it goes...."you feel.." and then that little "dun dun dun dun, dun dun" guitar thing? Or maybe I'm just the only one who likes this song?

I don't understand why people don't like it. I LOVE this song. I think it totally ROCKS! And I think the lyrics are a little racy which is always cool.

People Hate This SOng?

I love No Questions Asked! I love the bridge, the chourus - my favorite part "Ohh....but there was a time when he called her angel - where in the world did you come from?" [Oops! What I meant was, I love the lyrics, and the emotion, and the lines "Well, it's hard to be civil and it's real hard to be nice - but you did it my love, every time!"]

Great song!

Cristian 02-14-2003 10:25 PM

SodaScouts, is it just me or are you confusing "No Questions Asked" with "Ooh My Love" from The Other Side Of The Mirror???

I love "No Questions Asked". I like the way the guitars sound, and Stevie's vocal and some of the lyrics, too. One of her better late 80's songs, for sure. :)

My problem with No Questions Asked is the words don't seem to fit the music. It doesn't sound very organized, like the vocals are all over the place and there's no flow to it. I certainly don't HATE the song...if it's on I wouldn't grind my teeth and want it changed right away. But it's certainly near the bottom of my least favorite list.

tommer 02-15-2003 07:07 AM

this song is a shining example for stevie's boldness and brilliance as a songwriter, like Sara, this song has no actual chorus, which is pretty amazing to what's supposed to be a hit single.
the production can be as listener-friendly as it gets, but how many times should you listen to a chorus-less song to dig it? way too many. this is very demanding from any listener.

Mac Fan 02-15-2003 07:32 AM

It was 80s(that's why it's on the green Greatest Hits album)
I don't know why so many people hate it, but I used to really hate it, but now I like it.

See that's exactly what I love about it - I couldn't have explained it better myself. I love the disorganization of it! And I love the rawness of her voice. I had no idea that this song was unpopular, it's definatly one of my favorite up tempo Stevie songs.

I adored this song immediately upon hearing it when the "Greatest Hits" album was released (I also dug "As Long As You Follow") and still rate it as one of Stevie's best songs from that period. In addition to what others have mentioned (lyrics, vocals etc), I love Christine's tinkling piano preceding the "night after night" line - it's simply gorgeous. My only problem with it is those god-awful backing vocals courtesy of that intruder Billy Burnette - the sleazy dumbass just can't sing.
Billy, of course, is the main reason I don't bother with the "Behind The Mask" album - he really is a wretched son-of-a-bitch! Needless to say, I ditched the cut 'n' paste debacle that was the "Time" album midway through the first listen - it was twice as bad as "BTM" because it featured that screeching harpy Bekka Bramlett - what a trollop!

One of my faves!

No Questions Asked is one of my all time favorite songs of Stevie's! It is one of her best works without Lindsey (he wasn't involved in that song, was he?) On the other hand, the demo for this song is so boring!!!!

ejof17 02-15-2003 09:56 AM

I love the way she sings:

"I don't throw --
the cold winds of it at you
anymore!"

I could listen to that part over and over!

And I also love:

"And who gets --
the cold winds of it all --
everytime --
well, it's hard to be civil
and it's real hard to be nice --
but, you did it my love, everytime!"

It is a very singable song, I just adore it!

Oops~ er, yes. I was listening to "Ooh My Love" as I typed, and my brain must have refused to switch gears. Embarrassing!

But I do love "No Questions Asked." My favorte part of THAT is "Well, it's hard to be civil and it's real hard to be nice - but you did it, my love, every time."

Thanks for pointing that out so I could fix it!

Count me in...I really like this song too. I'd compare it to "Paper Doll" with all its little quirky music jumps and bounces. Much like what Phil was saying about Christine's piano part and Seventh Wonder's mention of the "dun dun dun guitar part thing". The lyrics are A1 in my book. Even though Stevie's vocals are a little "scratchy" it doesn't detract from, but adds to the emotion or the feel of the song. Isn' this one of those can't have, shouldn't do, but can't help it, gotta have songs? Stevie must have been a bit troubled when she wrote this song....an emotional wreck to say the least. It's hard to follow all the emotions and (persons) going on in this song. All you need is love, love...love is all you need Stevie.

I, too, love it. I was graduating college and on my way to greater things while leaving many things behind when it came out. So, it will always be special to me. I wish, however, it had had better production a la "As Long as You Follow." At times in NQA, it seems as if Stevie is singing through a pillow:( Also, there is a great recoded interview about it where Stevie says, in paraphrase, everyone will be able to relate to it, esp. women, because everyone has sent somneone they love away and then gone running back to them when the time was better, etc.

I totally agree"strand". I also thought that the entire song was recorded in a garbage can. It had a "tinny" sound to it and the vocals always seemed to be buried in the mix.

That all being said, I have always loved this song. It's very upbeat and rocking and anytime Miss Stevie is rocking and letting loose in a song I love it!!

"Not now.
I need you now.
I'm broken hearted --
I broke down
Like a little girl"

That part moves me for some reason.

Also to add about this song - I've always thought that it has such a tremendous build-up. I get excited when I hear the first guitar strains, because it just keeps building up from there with the percussion and bass, and finally the first verse even has a huge build-up about it too, the way she sings "when I see him... I feel him..." I always thought it would make a good concert opener because of the way it builds up, but I doubt we shall ever hear it live :(

I love this song. It's a song I can relate to.

Maybe this is a misconception?! Now start the same type of thread about "When I See You Again" and you may get a little different reaction. But I daresay that there will be a few supporters of that one too....cause you see Stevie does really work magic on just about everything she does! :D

LOL maybe it actually is a misconception. The reason I thought so is because a lot of people in the Rumours forum were saying they wish it had been left off of VBOFM and such. And also the phrase "recorded in a garbage can" is often associated with this song  But judging from this thread, it seems like the majority like the song (at least the majority in this section).

I wouldn't even think of starting a thread for "When I See You Again." *shudders*:D

Well things are a little more, lets say "objective" in there with more Lindsey fans in the mix. And I say if Lindsey can sing while he's kneeling down on the bathroom floor I think stevie should be able to sing in a garbage can. :D

Hey speaking of shuddering...is that really you in your avatar?

No problem, Nancy! (It took me a while to realize that you were "the girl behind Buckinhgamnicks.net" which is a site that I visit every so often and find very interesting, well built and informative, too :)).

I forgot to say I love the way the guitars are blended to eachother. Lindsey's absence made possible to hear two different guitarists, a very 'marked' rhyhtm guitarist, and over the mix, the lead guitar, which is just great: Fleetwood Mac sounding like a real rock band, even with those synth keyboards, again. Of course at the time I heard that song I was so uninformed about Fleetwood Mac that I couldn't even know that a guy named "Lindsey" wasn't there. What I did know, though, was that the guitars were quite different from what I've been hearing through the rest of the album. Yes, even in "As Long As You Follow".

I think the mix is muddy & has no dynamics, but I like the song, too! It's one of those nice narrow tunes Stevie has written by the bundle. I think it would be nice to have just Stevie's vocal & Mick's drumming on the track & maybe the bass line.
