Seven Wonders

Does anyone know what Stevie is saying between the Chorus and the next verse? It sounds almost like 'Sara' but I'm not sure...

Bella Figura 01-27-2003 04:10 PM

it's Tara

MikeD 01-27-2003 04:44 PM

You got me....could be...

ricohv 01-27-2003 05:04 PM

I've always heard it was "Tara" but never have known why!
Any guesses?
I'm assuming it's another mythical locale reference- (like "Emmiline"- a mythical location in one of Taylor Caldwell's books). Maybe somehow she is tying these into the beauty of the Seven Wonders?

SmthngOfADreamr 01-27-2003 05:12 PM

I agree that it is Tara, although I can't prove it either. She mentions Tara in reference to Scarlette in 'Welcome to the room..Sara', so I've always just assumed that she was drawing some kind of odd conncetion between the two songs... nothing that I can really make sense of though, especially since 7W was recorded before rehab and WTTRS was recorded afterwards. Plus 7W wasn't even written by her.

jwd 01-27-2003 06:24 PM

Scarlette.....Tara..... reference "Gone With The Wind"...suerly you all have seen the movie! :)

Joe

ricohv 01-27-2003 06:38 PM

Of course we have! That doesn't mean that anyone can make logical conclusions as to why Stevie makes reference to certain things in certain songs (i.e. Tara/Seven Wonders)

Yeah..I always thought it was a Gone With the Wind reference..It would make sense..

"it's not home...and it's not Tara"...and in the book "Scarlett" the sequel to GWTW they go more in depth about Tara...in Ireland...and it's a little Mythical...maybe Stevie is a GWTW enthusiast...lol..I dunno...

That didn't stop her changing 'end of the line' for 'Emmiline'!

Where d you get all that information about the recording of the songs/rehab, etc? From Mick/Brunning's books?

I can't say what the original source is for that information (because I have no idea) but it was part of another discussion that we had here probably over a year ago now. I can't really recall who contributed it either, but it probably did come from one of the books I would assume.

Phil 01-28-2003 09:30 AM

Doesn't Stevie sing "Pharaoh" during the bridge of "Seven Wonders"? It does sound a lot like "Sara" and most people I know think that's what she is saying, but given the context of the song's other lyrics, I'm certain it is actually "Pharaoh".

Sorcerer386 01-28-2003 03:23 PM

Well, I don't think it can be "pharaoh" because there's definitely an "uh" sound at the end of the word, as in Sara (Sar-uh) or Tara. Pharaoh makes an "oh" sound at the end. HOWEVER, "pharaoh" would explain why we really can't hear the first letter of the word (or first letter sound). I can't hear an "S" or a "T," and those are both hard letter sounds that should be easily picked up. An "F" sound on the other hand is softer and could sound more silent.

Personally, I think someone who hasn't done "Ask Stevie" yet should ask this question. I would do it but you can only send in one question. Until I find it what it really is though, it'll be "Sara" for me.

Jessica Leigh 01-29-2003 04:09 AM

i've always been sure that it's sara... i mean sara is a word she'd be more likely to sing in the background of a song... as opposed to tara... yeah she sang about tara in another song on the album... but i'd be willing to bet she'd leave that as a one time thing and then do her little sara thing in other places...

Johnny Stew 01-29-2003 07:38 PM

For the last (nearly) 16 years, I've been well and truly convinced that Stevie's singing "Tara."

I really don't think she's saying "Sara," as I think the sibilance on the "S" would stand out, if she were... whereas a "T" could come out more muted.

ricohv 01-29-2003 08:06 PM

Tara , Tara, Tara! It is Tara!! I swear-a!

Sorcerer386 01-29-2003 08:31 PM

Actually, I listened to Seven Wonders probably 5 times since I posted that other post, and there's a possibility it IS pharaoh. In fact, when I was listening to it to hear if I thought it could be pharaoh, I experienced a VERY strong deja vu feeling...and I swear I remember having this conversation elsewhere a long time ago. It had to have been on AMFM when I used to go there. I don't remember what the general concensus was, but I do remember people making very strong arguments that it could, in fact, be pharaoh. Again, who knows...I like singing "Sara" along to it, so I sing "Sara" regardless of the actual word. Kind of like on Doing the Best... I could swear she says "I just TOOK the cards" and not "I just THREW the cards," or on Sweet Girl I sing "I WANT TO fly," and not "I WATCHED YOU fly."

DownOnRodeo 01-30-2003 09:20 AM

With the help of my magical monitorng headphones (recently lauded for the 'discovery' of a thunder sound in Storms; see Rumours board;) ) I did my best listening to Seven Wonders.

To me (and this is wholly subjective I know) I distictly hear the 'ar-oh' sound of Pharaoh.
The second bridge is more a close call in regards to it leaning towards 'ara', presumably of Tara, but I can still descern Pharoah.

Given "Emilline" and what have you.... for all we know (a) even she didnt know what she was singing in those bridges, or (b) it was some 'nonsense' (seriously not meant in the derogatory way) even 'hybrid', of 'tara', 'sara', 'pharoah' and whatever else.

My vote is Pharoah, which is crazy cause I would have never EVER heard that unless I'd read this thread.

We'll never know till we find out from Stevie, as you said Sorcerer386.

DownOnRodeo 01-30-2003 09:23 AM

Hahah, I've just decided it may as well be (aptly)

'error...' !

lol!;)

paleshadow 01-30-2003 03:51 PM

Hmmm. I thought that it was "Never" It would make sense since the previous line is "I'll never live to match the beauty again". I also remember reading the lyrics on a web site somewhere and I think it said "Never" Maybe someone can submit this as an "Ask Stevie" question.

ricohv 01-30-2003 05:40 PM

"Never" certainly would be the most logical (unlike Stevie) word, wouldn't it?

Phil 01-30-2003 05:51 PM

Further to my previous message, I think this can all be cleared up by checking the lyric sheet that came with the vinyl release of "Tango In The Night". I haven't bothered to check as yet but I seem to recall "Pharaoh" in print all those years ago. Failing this, perhaps the music book of this album may confirm things one way or the other.
I must say that there are about a million other more pressing concerns that could be directed towards the "Ask Stevie" segment over this rather trivial matter so let's see if we can solve the mystery ourselves.

Sarah 01-30-2003 06:00 PM

it sounds like Tara to me.. and the gone with the wind reference definitely works... the its not home & its not tara.. why the..hizzle.. would she say "its not home & its not sara" .. wouldnt it be it's not home & she's not sara .. cuz.. people aren't "its." pharaohs are people too, eh?

sarah (not tara.)

Nope.....it's still a mystery! Actually I checked that a few days ago when this thread started. Honestly though I never thought it was anything BUT "Tara". All these other words are a "little interesting" but don't capture that image from her uttering "Taaaaaaaraaaa" that I get. "Tara" works best for me so that's how it's going to stay. :) Seems like Stevie wasn't the only one inserting lyrics or interpretations into this song.

I could see Stevie imagining herself on a southern plantation in the Civil War period (ala alternate 'Stand Back' video) as a "Scarlett" type character...."another time another place" with all her rock and roll romantic interests as Rhett Butlers. That whole scenario/lifestyle is Stevie's version of a "Seven Wonder"...not necessarily what we would classify one as.

Joe

DownOnRodeo 01-30-2003 11:08 PM

Maybe Stevie is friends with Farrah Fawcett and was dedicating it to her!

Farrah...

lol! ;)

Yes, I suppose someone could ask her what performer has influenced her, or how she feels about her demo's being leaked again, or if her dogs have learned any new tricks... Come on. About 80 percent of the questions that get answered are trivial, and the truth is most fans know the answers to these questions anyway. People aren't asking because they are dying to know, they just want to feel like Stevie actually communicated with them in some way by answering a question they asked. Stevie is an entertainer, she isn't the President of the United States. If anyone has "pressing concerns" with her that go much deeper than a lyric to one of her songs then that's pretty frightening.

Phil 01-31-2003 06:39 AM

Occasionally, a performer of integrity and substance, such as Stevie, might just appreciate the opportunity to connect with her audience on an intimate and meaningful level. A little genuine, perhaps even thought provoking conversation may just be welcomed and possibly even offer some respite from the dreary, incessant whining of lobotomised fans.
Of course, I may be mistaken but my suggestion is to reserve the trite, predictable and lame line of questioning for the likes of someone more deserving... I hear Christine McVie's releasing an album some time this year.

DownOnRodeo 01-31-2003 08:27 AM

Phil - Your attitude and behaviour is really boring. Theres some pre-pubescent members here who are somehat lacking in the finer points of 'social' decorum, yet I hope you share their age and inexperience because with every post you're making them look wiser. If, contrarily, you senile, or perhaps a touch simple, then my insincerest condolences; but let me be the one to make you aware that its "fans" of your attitude and behaviour that embarrass celebrities like Stevie, who are normal people doing extraordinary things, not the goddess who you obviously worship... with blood sacrifices and voodoo pin cushions of Christine, perhaps?.

Dry up.

Phil 01-31-2003 09:10 AM

DOR, I bow to your irrefutably superior intellect... what a wise and articulate young man you appear to be with your startling insights and engaging witticisms! I stand rebuked and corrected. Keep up the good work mate.
PS Is Rodeo a close friend of yours? I should think he's rather grateful for your attentions.

DownOnRodeo 01-31-2003 10:59 AM

No surprises there - I wouldn't expect you to be familiar with one of the most popular songs here on the Ledge - Down On Rodeo - but I would expect you to resort to something like homosexual innuendo.

Well, 'Phil' - newsflash - this and every other Stevie site is a veritable mardi gras of gay pride, so that sort of innuendo is either gonna fall on deaf ears or insult a lot of the people here. Anyway, I'll leave you to your mardi gras, as it were, and proceed back to the Lindsey and Rumours forum. And if you even plan on coming back to the Rumours board to make one more single unsolicitied swipe at the character of C McVie, I might advise against it.

SmthngOfADreamr 01-31-2003 11:38 AM

Down On Rodeo is definitely one of my favorite GOS songs/demos. A highly recommendable download is anyone out there really still hasn't heard them!

On a side note, while I do find Phil's frequent criticism of Christine a bit harsh in nature, I also find it interesting. I used to think that she was sort of untouchable, because any confrontation on the Ledge was always Lindsey vs. Stevie. I always wondered if anyone out there felt very strongly for Christine one way or the other since she never seems to receive excessive praise or criticism. I guess Phil answers my question.

That's just what I was going to say Dreamr. It's not really strange in a sense to me, but it IS quite different to be drawn away from the Buckingham vs. Nicks battle to hear opinions on the other three members. In fact, until THIS thread, I had never even noticed Phil talking down about Christine, I suppose because it's just something you don't see.

In any case, we've gone way off topic. Anyone else have a word that could possibly fit into Seven Wonders? Hehe

Johnny Stew 01-31-2003 01:07 PM

I think there was a large mirror in the studio, and Stevie got a bit distracted during the instrumental bridges.
Her mind wandered, and she was thinking, "I need to fix my Hair, ahh... Yes, I need to fix my Hair, ahh..."
:D

SmthngOfADreamr 01-31-2003 01:54 PM

OK so I just grabbed my 45 and thought I'd give it a spin on 33 1/3 speed to see if I could detect any letters or sounds at the slower speed. (I'm bored today, I'm off and I'm home alone) All that I was able to detect for certain is that Stevie sounds incredibly frightening when she is played at this speed.

Actually Johnny Stew may be on to something with his "Hair-ahh" idea! I'm now convinced that it's not Tara, and I'm pretty sure that it isn't Sara either, becuase at that speed, the first letter of the first syllable is noticeable hushed, like H, PH, or TH. Doesn't really sound like T or S at all. I'm pretty sure it isn't Pharoah either, because the last syllable is definatley AH, not OH. So in conclusion, I don't know what the hell she's saying, and we probably never will.

Sarah 01-31-2003 07:59 PM

maybe she's trying to say sara or tara and just isnt doing it. singers frequently drop sounds.. (except for like.. the chorus nerds.. cuz their grade gets deducted.) i'm trying to think of an exact example.. but i really can't right now. give me time to stop being a moron & i'll come back with one. i knooooow she's done it before.

Johnny Stew 01-31-2003 08:54 PM

Someone... maybe Christine?... usually drops the "h" in the word "here," during the chorus of "Don't Stop."

"Don't stop, thinkin' about tomorrow... don't stop, it'll soon be 'ere...."

Johnny Stew

Sarah 01-31-2003 09:17 PM

thats true.. might be an "english people thing" though.. but that is a good example of what ..appens.

Thank you paleshadow & ricohv! LOL! I was lurking through this entire thread and wondering when someone else would agree with what I was thinking. I have always kind of wondered what she was singing and it finally dawned on me when I was listening to the track of TBOFM cd two weeks ago, very loudly in my car. It was a light bulb moment! "Oh yeah! "Never" now that would make sense, wouldn't it?!" (No I'm not very quick! lol) If you listen very closely, that is what she's saying, in the way only our Stevie could!

ERigby818 02-02-2003 01:42 PM

This thread has inspired me to post a poll, because I'm dying of curiosity to see what the general consensus is about what she's saying. Not that the general consensus is "right." I'm just curious.;)

BluDenm 02-03-2003 09:09 PM

I've gotta agree with Paleshadow, Rico & Wild Heart on this one..I'm convinced it's 'never' sort of drawn out. (Kind of like 'neh-vaaah') It struck me much like it must have for Wild Heart, but I was listening to the extended version of the song. Although years ago I thought she was just humming.....

Lee 02-11-2003 07:19 PM

And I thought I was the only one wondering about this. The first time I heard this song was on The Very Best Of CD, so I came here on The Ledge looking for the lyrics, somehow hoping I they've have it on here what Steve is saying. Boy, do I feel stupid. Now don't laugh. I thought she was saying "Canada". OK go ahead & laugh:nod: I didn't think Canada was one of the seven wonders, but you never know.

Ok, I'm going to really listen to it. I'll play it at work tomorrow so I'm real close to the speakers & listen. "Never" makes more sense than "Canada" though.

Lee
