Sheryl Crow OVEREXPOSED ??

interesting commentary; thanks goodness Stevie was never a media grubbing rock star, and has kept most of her mystique in tact!

Overexposed stars? Sheryl joins Ozzy and Britney as musicians we'd like to see fade away a little bit

(Entertainment Weekly) -- It's time for rock stars to go away, at least for a while.

I don't mean the music; I mean the sight of the people who create it.

Take, for example, Sheryl Crow. I genuinely like Crow's records and the effortless way they've revived the sound and sensibility of breezy '70s Cali pop. She's become the Tom Petty or Bob Seger of her generation -- a solid craftsperson, if not an innovator -- and she's done it as a woman, an accomplishment in itself.

You'd think Crow would be content with that success, and with the knowledge that her career has stayed in the limelight far longer than those of her Lilith Fair peers. But no. Months after the release of her latest album, one can't open a newspaper or magazine, turn on the TV (''Big Brother 3'' -- what was that?), or watch clips from benefit concerts, NASCAR events, or even classroom appearances (!!) without seeing Crow smiling for the cameras; she may be pop's most relentless careerist. I half-expected her to show up at the opening of that new BBQ joint on my block last week.

Anyone who recalls what it was like to be a pop fan shortly before the arrival of MTV knows this wasn't the way it always was. Rock then had an underground, semi-secret-society atmosphere, and the media coverage reflected it.

To actually see what a musician looked like, you had to stumble across an occasional article or, if you were lucky, see an extremely rare network-TV appearance on shows like ''Don Kirshner's Rock Concert'' or ''American Bandstand.'' Unlike the movie stars who shamelessly ran up to any reporter's microphone, rock stars weren't ubiquitous, which was part of their appeal and mystique.

MTV (and, yes, mags like EW) changed that scenario for good. But only in the last year or so has its impact truly kicked in. I partly blame rap, whose most brazen stars have long been willing to flaunt their material possessions as proof of their fame. Shows like ''Cribs'' and ''The Osbournes'' embody the media overkill now accorded all-too-willing rock stars.

Much of pop's mystery has been lost now that we've seen Ozzy taking out the trash, Mariah posing in her shoe closet, Lenny Kravitz showing off his new apartment in The New York Times, Britney Spears sitting front and center at New York's fashion shows, and Ryan Adams yucking it up with Joan Rivers on the Grammy red carpet.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still want to believe that my rock stars aren't mere publicity-grubbing mass entertainers but people who make the most nakedly direct of all the arts, who can articulate thoughts and feelings many of us can't, and who might actually irk someone like Joan Rivers. But I also realize those days are as long gone as Sheryl Crow's shy period, and we may as well grow accustomed to their faces.

Actually, the same COULD be said about Stevie back from about 1976-1979...then again from 1981-1985 or so.

blackwidower 10-24-2002 04:20 PM

sheryl was so over exposed you cant see a stevie/FM thing anymore without sheyl maniging to worm her was in. this article is right on target. I cant speek to stevie back then cause well I wasnt alive hell my parents will still in colledge when tusk came out. but i do no this stevie never gave grand tours of her house or took a bath on MTV and showed herself overcoming her addictions on tv (ozzy) imean stevie was more about the music than showing the world her fricken private life

DrummerDeanna 10-24-2002 04:57 PM

I think the matter is extremely subjective...to me Sheryl is not over-exposed, I think it's great that she's getting her name out there, and just promoting herself...that's what they gotta do to sell records etc...AND I like Sheryl...SO I can totally see where you'd be sick to death of her if you didn't like her...because I, for one, feel like I've had just about enough of other stars...Eminem...Christina etc...too many to name...but I know it's just because I don't like 'em...so whatever...I just deal with it...and wait til they fade off...as almost all do at some point.....so that's my two cents :D

Jessica Leigh 10-24-2002 05:26 PM

i completely agree with this article... sheryl is freaking everywhere! i mean yes, i do like her music.. i think she's great... but she's really really getting on my nerves.. it's almost become a joke in this household about how she's everywhere... one day i get up and one roommate is flipping through tv channels and sees her profile thing on bravo... then down to the CMT channel and they're playing the "home" video (yes,,, the country channel) then i get in the car and listen to the radio and there's a jiffy lube commercial where you can hear "i think i change would do you good" in the background... then i go to work at hard rock and they play teo of her videos in 3 hours.. the i go to the grocery store after work and check out the magazine stand and see her face on two differnt magazine covers....then i get a rolling stone with stevie in it and sheryl not only has a little interview but she also is doing a freaking milk ad... and THEN we get a new fm cd and she's freaking writing in the liner notes... when the f*ck will this madness end? i am totally sheryled out

FiercestCalmSea 10-24-2002 06:00 PM

I am a Sheryl fan,but enough already...how much freakin publicity can you do?? I understand some of things she does are for worth causes, like the breast cancer ad thing...but she really is just EVERYWHERE....i liked her alot more when i didn't see her or hear her 20 million times a day.

sisterofthemoon 10-24-2002 07:15 PM

I agree with that article all the way. i couldn't help but roll my eyes when I saw they even put a comment of hers in the new VB of FM. I think she's great and very talented, and I don't mind seeing her every once in a while, but for the love of God, Sheryl...

you know.. i read little things kind of like this, this rant article, all the time and i can't help but think... Dude. Who cares?

I mean really. Obviously, SOMEBODY in this nation/world/human race/whatever.. wants to see her (Sheryl Crow) -- rather, I should say "them" (the overexposed.)

There's a reason why these people are popular... And yeah.. it is a little annoying to watch the media sing the praises of one star all the time. But taking up a whole page to soapbox your negative attitude towards seeing about someone else's success too often? Pa-leeze. It can almost be interpretted as a jealousy thing. Wah.. I need MY time in the spot light. But daddy, I want a goose that lays the golden eggs! I want it now!

I'd rather gripe about having to see serial snipers, Osamas, and school shootings on 40 krillion TV stations and 16 gajillion magazine pages.

And you know, I love Stevie and the rest of the Mac family so much. I really do.. All time favorites, most definitely. But, I can't truthfully say that I think Sheryl's misguided because she's so publicized now and that's not really how the Mac kids chose to do it, or that SN/FM got her where she is. That seems a little holier than thou, even demeaning.. like she wasn't popular from her own work and that she needed celebrity endorsement.

I dunno. Just a few thoughts from someone who doesn't really come here much anymore...

I'm sure the Sheryl Crow fans are very happy to see her! Look at it this way...if it were Stevie or FM then would we be moaning??

FiercestCalmSea 10-27-2002 01:13 PM

True That

But the only way the Mac will get that overexposed is if they get some new publicists...a job that i would be more than happy to have btw :)

LOL! I totally agree!

Pip

Sarah 10-27-2002 06:56 PM

For real. I'll be the publicist.

I have as big a mouth as ANYBODY out there. C'mawn. BRING it.

I'd like to see FM out there and over exposed. I'm not saying I wanna know what kind of TP they use or anything, but... I like knowing neat little facts about the people. Makes them seem more like real people, and in a way, I think they want that.

Extended congrats to Sheryl for being big enough to be dissed for being too big. She's officially made it.

Just wait. This time next year, after the initial excitement over the blitz of the new album & tour wears off, we'll be yawning when FMac starts raking in Grammys, American Music Awards, a Juno (for best foreign artist), etc, etc. They'll be "overexposed", too. "oh ho-hum, Stevie's on the cover of In Style AGAIN".
:blob2:

Sarah 10-28-2002 12:42 AM

Yeah.. and then Rolling Stone will start in with their little disses every once in a while. Freakin'....

It'll be like 1997 all over again.

Except the ledge wont be 1 humongously long page and there wont be 700 "i'm really stevie nicks" posts.

LOL at your post, Jessica!

Just when you thought you'd seen/heard enough Sheryl -
Don't misintepret this, I'm NOT a Cowboy fan (Go, Dolphins!), but had to watch Emmit break Walter Payton's record yesterday. Before the game was over, they had put together a tribute to Emmit Smith, to the tune of "You're an Original." Ugh.

Jessica Leigh 11-05-2002 05:53 AM

hey hey hey... here's another one...

got home from the bar tonight kind of tipsy... turned on the tv... and there were elk dancing around the screen... some nature show... to the tune of "my favorite mistake" while the local weather report ran across the bottom of the screen... talk about seeing freaky things when you're drunk.

Livia 11-11-2002 05:32 PM

Did ya see her on the cover of yesterday's Parade?

It was actually a good article...and (brace yourself) she did NOT mention Stevie OR Fleetwood Mac ONE TIME! I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. There were pics of her with all kinds of people too, but not one with Stevie.

madformac 11-11-2002 06:36 PM

Please end the thread guys.

That woman gets far too much attention and exposure as it is!!!

Please! No more! Aaaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh!!!
