? About Lindsey on new Tom Petty album
I know this has already been discussed, but how many songs does Lindsey appear on for "The Last DJ" TP & the HB's new album? I know it goes on sale on Tuesday. Is anyone planning on getting it then? If so, please post your thoughts about the songs.
Also a Tom Petty question, for those of you who may know - What happened to Howie Epstein? I know they brought Ron Blair back so I was just wondering if there was some kind of fight or something. Anyway they were on Letterman tonight and sang "The Last DJ" which sounded pretty good, and will be on Conan on Tuesday (8th) night for anyone that didn't know and wants to see them. |
I think Lindsey is just on one song.
Howie Epstein (and girlfriend/wife/whatever Carlene Carter...Johnny Cash's stepdaughter) got popped for heroin possession somewhere in Texas about two years ago, but with appeals, bail, and an agreement to go through rehab, he stayed free for about a year or so, but, now he's "paying his debt to society". I think he "surrendered to authorities" a few days or weeks after the Heartbreakers' HoF induction. There was a statement on the TP&H official website a few months ago. I guess Ron is just filling in for Howie until he gets out of jail (which I think is about a 5-10 year sentence). One of Howie's last gigs, if not THE last gig (not counting the R&RHoF jam), with the Heartbreakers was the "Tribute To Heroes" telethon Sept 2001. I remember seeing TP&H on SNL a few years ago (when Tom's "Wildflowers" album just had come out), Howie was playing a Turner Model 1 BASS!! |
Rolling Stone says The Man Who Loved Women has a ukelele in the mix. Makes me wonder if Lindsey had anything to do with that. I'm also dying to figure out what the song is really about.
Anyhoo, not getting the record today. Already blew my CD budget for the month. Anyone who gets it, please post your thoughts. RESCIND THE STRIKE!!! |
Ok, now, IF that's Lindsey on uke, then that doesn't exactly makeup for the "Here Comes The Sun" debacle last New Year's Eve, but goes a long way...George Harrison LOVED ukeleles!!!
:blob2: |
Ahemmmm!!!
 Ouchy!!!! You guys feel better now?Sky:mad:
|
Not understanding where you're coming from with that reply, Char.
Nothing wrong with a ukelele...wish my fingers were smaller so I could be a bit more adept at playing one, myself. They have such a unique sound...and we all know how Lindsey is at picking the right "sound" for certain parts. Whether it be a guitar in Nashville tuning, open tuning, standard tuning, a mandolin, a banjo or a uke, he always seems to find the right sound for the right part. (face it, he screwed up with "Here Comes The Sun"...one bad idea in 53 years...well, that and..oh never mind) |
Wow, I didn't know that about Howie. Heroin huh, pretty hard core. Too bad. Not surprising though, he looked like he had been through the ringer.
I'm excited to hear the uke, if indeed Lindsey does play it in the song. I'm excited to hear the song anyway and the rest of the album. Chili - Why didn't you like Lindsey's version of "Here Comes the Sun?" I personally didn't like it much at all when I first heard it, but now I really like it. The only part I don't like about it is when Lindsey shouts/sings "suuun, suuuun" at the end. If that wasn't in there, I would like it even more. |
Lindsey doesn't play the uke....but who knows if he had anything to do with it being there?? He sings backup at the end of the one song - "The Man Who Loves Women."
It's kind of a light-hearted, cutesy song about, I think, this fictional character in the songs who is "loving women" to excess. ;-) Musically, it sort of makes me think of something Paul McCartney might have done. The Man Who Loves Women He's the man who loves women women, women, women He's the man who loves women and fallin' in love every day When he sees a senorita It's a sure thing that he'll heed her He's the man who loves women Fallin' in love every day But in the mornin' When she wakes up He'll be far away Keepin' his secret safe Hey, hey, hey He's quite prepared to mingle Comes on like he's single He's the man who loves women and falling in love's just his way One of these days he's gonna pay for falling in love every day Oh stay away He's the man who loves women It has sort of circus-like feel at the end where Lindsey sings. He sings the last two lines several times - "Oh stay away, he's the man who loves women." Haven't had a chance to listen to the rest yet. |

At ease. RESCIND THE STRIKE!!! |
Yes, I think he did play it on his Cradle tour. I really liked the Save Me A Place that his band did. Actually, I was pretty thrilled he dusted that off for his tour. I just meant that he doesn't actually play it on the Tom P song.
BTW, Tom mentions Jim Ladd's "inspiration and courage" in the liner notes. Perhaps the last DJ he had in mind. P.S. - TP and Mike Campbell are credited as playing bass on most of the tracks until "late arrival" Ron Blair appeared for two songs: Lost Children & Can't Stop the Sun. Familiar name - Lenny Castro - credited with percussion throughout. |

I think Jim still does his syndicated interview show...but I'm not sure if he still DJs in the traditional sense. |

Les, sounds like you got the Petty record. Tell us about it. We are eager to learn more. RESCIND THE STRIKE!!! |
Yes, Jim Ladd is still DJ'ing "in the traditional sense" :D. 95.5 KLOS-FM Los Angeles 10pm-2am weeknights. A couple of weeks ago on my way home from a gig, he played in a row:
Johnny Cash-Folsom Prison Blues Led Zeppelin-Gallows Pole Bob Dylan-Highway 61 Revisited Rolling Stones-Dead Flowers Let's see some "Format" station try to pull THAT off without having it's DJ canned in 10 minutes. And, in the words of Jim Ladd... LORD, HAVE MERCY!! |

Well, I don't know how to follow the previous legal dispute, but I just wanted to say that i have been listening to TP's last DJ, and I really like it alot. i really like "money becomes king", track 2. It is a sentiment not lost on Lindsey I am sure.
ALTHOUGH, I really hate to say I don't care for "the man who loves women". You can't hear Lindsey at all until the end, and he is only credited with background vocals, and there are other songs on the CD I like better. I hate that. I wanted to like that one, and after about three run throughs, I don't! WAH! |
was all that legalese a joke?

Sulasmith, I'm sorry to hear that. But you like the album as a whole, so that's cool. RESCIND THE STRIKE!!! |
The Last DJ
It takes me a while to digest a whole new album; I like to listen several times first. But a few initial impressions:
Several songs use orchestral arrangements with strings and horns. "Dreamville" is one where it is especially prevalent. On the whole, for me, I think the slower, softer, acoustic songs work a little bit better musically: "Dreamville," "Like A Diamond," "Blue Sunday" (which has a few country edges here and there). The faster tunes have their moments too. "Lost Children" is a good guitar song, as is "Can’t Stop the Sun." The title track, "Money Became King" and "Joe" have those good, typically TP, sardonic stories to tell. "Joe" is an absolutely caustic, scorching, ultra-cynical take on the worst of the music biz: My name is Joe, I’m the CEO I’m the man makes the big wheels roll… Go get me a kid with a good-looking face Bring me kid can remember his place Some hungry poet son of a bitch He gets to be famous I get to be rich Or bring me a girl They’re always the best You put ‘em onstage and have ‘em undress Some angel whore who can learn a guitar lick Hey, that’s what I call music... So burnt-out Johnny thinks our books are shifty What good’s that alchi to me when he’s fifty? We could move catalog if he’d only die quicker Send my regards to the gig and case of good liquor. One minor complaint is that in a couple of songs I think he gets a little bit too wordy, but that’s just me. I think I do like "The Man Who Loves Women." It’s definitely on the light-hearted side. It’s a nice contrast to the heavier stuff. It’s a mildly Beach Boy moment, in a way. The last two songs on the album - "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can’t Stop the Sun" strike me as the songs sounding most like the rock’n’roll TP & the HB sound. The latter has a great guitar-heavy ending. "Have Love Will Travel" is the one that’s probably edging out the others as a favorite right now for me. |
Go get me a kid with a good-looking face
Bring me kid can remember his place Some hungry poet son of a bitch He gets to be famous I get to be rich Absolutely awesome lyrics. |
Where can I download this song. When I get it off Kazza, I get a looped version of the chorus.:(

You're funny. ;) I hope to hear the album soon. :) Song of the moment - Rose Garden |
OK, I've been listening some more, and this CD is really growing on me alot. There are some absolutely brillant lyrics in these songs.
Like I said earlier, my fav is still "money becomes king". It is a long story song with a lyric sheet that is very Stevie-esque in proportion, so all I can say is you just have to hear it. It is written from a fan's perspective about how inaccessible rock stars become to the "true fans" who were loyal before all the fame and money. As someone else said, "joe" has some very powerful imagery that just makes me want to say "Yeah! Tell 'em Tom!" one verse I really like is: so burnt-out Johnny thinks our books are shifty what good's that alchi to me when he's fifty we could move more catalog if he'd only die quicker send my regards to the gig and a case of good liquor he gets to be famous i get to be rich The whole song really skewers the music suits! I know Tom and Lindsey have probably had many conversations on this subject! The last song, "can't stop the sun" is also basically saying to the industry a big "screw you"! well you can take my money you may turn off my microphone but you can't steal what you can't feel can't stop the sun from shining down and down and down and you may think you control things but there'll be more just like me who won't give in who'll rise again can't stop the world from turning round and round and round hmmmmmm..............sounds just like something Lindsey would say! |
So, Sula, should I run out and get it? Should I spend next month's CD budget?
You might want to check out Steve Earle's Jerusalem. Anyone who appreciates a musical flip of the bird would like this album. RESCIND THE STRIKE!!! |
Well I got it for 15.99 at Barnes & Noble, but I wouldn't do without lunches for a week to get it or anything. It is enhanced, with a photo gallery and stuff, and in my opinion it's a good CD.
It has a bit of quirkyness to it that appeals to the Lindsey fan in me, like the little bicycle bell at the end of "the man who loves women". I can't help but wonder if Linds had anything to do with that! There is also a radio theme throughout, with radio tuning noises and static leading into and out of some of the songs. It just depends on how much you like Tom Petty. I like him alot, and have most of his work, but even for me, I didn't run panting into the music section breathless and snatch it off the shelf. That will be me in April when this frigging FM thing finally makes its appearance! .....and maybe just little on Oct 15th......I gotta see the interviews and vids on VBoFM! |
I heard the new Steve Earle record "Jerusalem" is great. I'm definetely gonna check that out.
Speaking of other new and good records, Jackson Browne's new one is very good, and the new Beck album is magnificant! |
Ukulele on OOTC !!!
I agree with Sulamith...lots of Lindsey Quirkeness!
I like his bells and whistles and silliness in the mix! FYI...Lindsey plays what appears to be a soprano ukulele on tour for OOTC as a tribute to Carl Wilson "All My Sorrows "...it is a nice sentimental moment! chili...I meant...ahemmm!!!Let the man up! He's doing the best he can under the circumstances! A legend is gone...this was a voice choking moment for Lindsey!!! To me Lindsey was flustered and sad and having a hard time with his emotions during the song tribute! Luv,Sky |
