Question about Sig Lines?why so Many?

I just wondered why some of y'all have so many sig lines. I thought the purpose of a sig line was one concise thought that sums up how you feel about life, or the Mac or something. Does anyone think it makes reading posts more difficult? You gotta scrrrrolllllllllll down through 234 quotes (how many times are we gonna read 'em?) to get to the next message. And if that person or persons has contributed a lot to a thread, you gotta see all those tad-burn quotes over and over and over. Please don't flame me, I just don't see the point of 1,239 sig lines. :::::::crawling away in shame and putting flame retardent panties on:::::::confused:

madformac 06-29-2002 06:10 PM

yes

It can be annoying if there are more than 3. Too many lines and I don't think anybody reads them, it's just a pain scrolling past them. If you want to get more in then ROTATE them regularly

A sig is basically a fetish; it doesn't serve a practical purpose. It isn't there for the reader; it just gives the poster a psychologically satisfying feeling. I use sigs all the time when I post to Usenet. I enjoy varying them every few weeks & shocking or entertaining the few people who read them, but I can't really explain my enjoyment except just to say it's a pleasant mental buzz.

Sigs that are extremely long are one of many examples of rudeness on the Internet. When you post something, you are soliciting someone's attention. You're saying, "Stop what you're doing & read what I have to say." If you do that, it behooves you to abide by the community's codes of behavior (on the Internet it's called netiquette). Forcing people to scroll past a sig that's too long so that they can read what the person after you has to say is an especially egregious rudeness common among younger or newer Internet users. Among the rude activity on the Net, I'd rank the lengthy sig well below (i.e., worse) that of an average insult -- which is at least over & done with in a matter of seconds -- but really horrific flaming by a psychopath is just about the worst (except for carpet-bombing a newsgroup or spreading a computer virus).

I doubt there's any remedy for any of this rude activity, like sigs that are lengthier than most posts. People who don't care about other people on the Internet are quite intransigent & even belligerent with their rudeness, & most have no intention of changing. More & more, your only options are to use killfiles, ignores, or just to suffer -- at least as long as you continue to use the Net.

that would be a very good idea. But I guess people are very attached to their sig lines and wouldn't want to just put one or two on, and then save the others for another time. A friend of mine says it's totally mental to have more than one sig line. I could go for two or three though. More than that's just dumb in my opinion  :wavey:

yeah that's what I mean. It's like you scroll down through 20 feet of Stevie junk, and then all the next person (who has 14 feet of Lindsey junk quoted) says is "Oh" or "I agree". Oh well, thanks for the 411. :wavey:

wondergirl9847 06-29-2002 08:00 PM

Changing sigs...

LOL Thanks for reminding me, I am going to go change mine right now, I like a fresh signature every once in a while...gotta think of a good one..hmm...

Carole Ann 06-29-2002 08:30 PM

Thank you

...for bringing up what I had previously posted in another thread, although not nearly as politely as you did.

We get a huge kick, here, out of scro-o-o-o-o-oling down and down and down these interminably somnambulistic sigs, only to arrive at another post (with another 40 + line sig) that reads something like, "Thank you. I agree!" Geez! :distress::distress:

David said it best: It's appallingly rude ...and the general reaction by those who use these nasty things is...well, just SO adolescent. I was all ready to get into a snit...and the damned thing disappeared. Hm. I guess I'll have to get worked up about something else. But thanks, you two. Well said.

Just to clarify things I am not saying that anyone with more than a couple sig lines should walk around with a sign that blinks "UNBALANCED LOAD" on their foreheads. I would like to leave that observation to someone else!  But it does seem a little weird to have to decorate your posts with acres of self expressive, colored and flashing/scrolling and blinking stuff. It's the post to the thread that tells us who y'all really are and what you're thinking. Hey! Maybe I should wear an "unbalanced load" sign on my head. This is just an observation from yours truly. Seems it would lessen ban width problems, too??? I dunno. :wavey:

Cristian 06-29-2002 09:59 PM

In total agreement

I have always asked myself that very same question... it really slows things down... And sometimes it can be really annoying. So I basically agree with all the things that have been said and will try to use little space to post my feelings about this. :p

ChickenShack 06-29-2002 10:16 PM

Needless to say, Cristian, I love your pic of Christine. And you have a very punchy, funny sig line! :wavey: That to me is what a sig is all about.

Cristian 06-29-2002 10:25 PM

Why thanks...

...it's actually a line from The Simpsons.

And the picture... she does look beautiful in there, doesn't she? Good to know you also admire Chris in the same way I do... you should know that "heroes are hard to find"

estranged4life 06-29-2002 10:30 PM

I agree...

They can be annoying when they seem to go on and on and on...lol...I try to keep mine short, Brian

DownOnRodeo 06-29-2002 11:27 PM

Good point chickenhack.

What really annoyed me was when they had to close the ChitChat forum caause of bandwidth issues, when I'm sure the problem could've been solved if some Ledgies (no names mentioned!) cut down their 'sigs'.

Remember - sigs are bad for your health!

That would be "ChickenSHACK." :wavey:

Johnny Stew 06-29-2002 11:47 PM

I also prefer to choose a short lyrical quote, or phrase... something that strikes me at that moment. And periodically, I change it.

Sometimes, if it's a lyric that I feel strongly about, I'll come back to it more than once, or leave it up for a while... though I imagine that most people only read them once, and then not again.

I agree with Mick's comments on the 'Making of Rumours' video, in regards to the production of "Oh Daddy"....
"Less is more."

Editing the Subject line??

I changed my "who" to "why" and yet it still shows up as "Who" on the main page. As Chris would say--------->"WHY"? Now I AM CONFUSED!

I think that would be "ChickenGACK."

Gypsy-Rhiannon 06-30-2002 03:05 AM

I never meant to offend anyone with my sigs. I didn't realise they bugged so many people and I have tidied mine up a bit. It was not my intention to be rude.

I don't think that the size of sigs has anything to do with bandswidth issues. Isn't that about how many people 'hit' the site?? Also I don't think it was due to bandswidth that the chit chat board was closed...it was due to inapproriate posts and arguing.

Pip

BellaDonnaGypsy 06-30-2002 05:28 AM

OK, if it offends so many people I'll go change mine now.

Laura.

BellaDonnaGypsy 06-30-2002 05:31 AM

All done. And again, I'm sorry... I didn't realise it bugged you all so much.

Laura.

Ghosty 06-30-2002 09:00 AM

Hmmm... well now I am feeling boring for not even having a siggy at all. I do like reading them. They're fun. Guess I'll have to come up with one. But ya, I can picture myself changing it often. Kind of like my computer wallpaper! Is that just a woman thing or what (that we like to keep redecorating)? lol! I change my constantly!

I use webshots so my wallpaper changes every few hours! LOL!

Pip

Ghosty 06-30-2002 09:12 AM

I get some of mine from webshots. They have so many! I change them for the holidays, the seasons, and of course...my mood! Some are Stevie, but a lot are not. There are just so many cool ones. I am like this with calendars too! I can't buy just one. I end up buying like four! (On sale, of course - another woman thing!).

Okay, my first siggy! I went with one that I took my yahoo email and user name from. I used to be GhostThroughTheFog, but eventually became known as Ghosty for a nickname. And it just seemed to stick. It's one of my favorite song quotes. But I am sure my new sig will change like the weather! Unless I get preoccupied, which has been happening lately...

DownOnRodeo 07-01-2002 08:31 AM

Ghosty

How hilarious - that is where your name came from! Ha:laugh:
(mine's comparatively a no-brainer).
Yes I love that quote, except I really like two of those lines, I guess mainly for how they're sung and how they fit in with that great rocking melody of 'Angel':

So I close my eyes softly, 'till I become that part of the wind that we all long for, sometimes.
And to those that I love like a ghost through the fog etc...

Chickenhack
Hah there i was reading the second page of the thread to see where it had gone, laughing at the chickenhack refernces. Then i finally find out I made the typo! D'oh. And yes thanks for laughing at me, Ledgies! I suck at typing - I use 2 fingers. Can you believe it? (Well I guess after 'chickenhack' you can:distress: )

Pip, Laura

Thanks for the springclean (or is it - sigclean;)) but of course you didn't have to - especially if I said it (look at my post count). Blame Chickenshack - he started it!
I think this i my 99th or 100th post so I'm gonna get myself a sig finally now!
BTW There were certainly more bizzarely long sigs than you guys ever had. But again, don't worry about me.
Plus, about the ChitChat forum thing, there was a message by the moderator or Marty or someone saying that it had been closed for that reason, I think. In any case, I read tonight in one of these recent 'angry threads' as I call them, that the real reason was as you said. SO that was naiievty on my part. Thanks for giving two hoots anyway!:wavey:

sulamith 07-01-2002 10:27 AM

I belong to another message board where your sig line can only be four lines long due to band width problems and the fact that they irritate some folks.

I wouldn't be opposed to that kind of rule here.

I know I have a long one, and it is old, I just never think about changing it enough.

I don't have a problem with it either way.

Gee! I am not only "Chickenhack" but now, I am a boy, too?   I thought my sig might let on that I am a girlie. At least I was last time I checked. ;)

sulamith 07-01-2002 10:56 AM

Well, you guys shamed me into changing and shortening mine.

Ghosty 07-01-2002 11:35 AM

I love that line too - "So I close my eyes softly..." I love how she sings it, and the lyrics too. But ya, that's how I became Ghosty! lol! All from wanting to get on a message forum one day (not even a Stevie or FM one), and I had to think of a user I.D. real quick and went and got a yahoo account for it too. Hee!

Maybe I am silly, but is your username from a song? DownOnRodeo? I love hearing how people got their nicknames and user names...

Mine is funny because I happen to be very pale, and I can't tell you the amount of times I can walk into a room and scare the heck out of someone because they never heard me come in, and didn't realize I was there. It's so funny. I don't mean to. I guess I am just quiet - or ... just Ghosty! ;) lol!

congratulations.
and a note for all those who need to take the same step too-
DO IT. NOW. long sigs are very irritating, and i can assure you nobody reads what's written there anyway.
and one more thing, if you wanna quote someone's post, please, quote the relevant lines or points, that's okay, we read the entire post earlier, thanks.

BellaDonnaGypsy 07-01-2002 12:36 PM

Or we could use your trick, tommer, and put scrolling sigs in there instead... ;)

Laura.

Grainuaile 07-01-2002 01:10 PM

You know, I never read long signatures. It's irritating. But if someone has a scrolling sig (like tommer) I'll sit there and read it.

Gypsy-Rhiannon 07-01-2002 04:10 PM

I do like scrolling sigs.....

Pip

stephmoore 07-01-2002 07:03 PM

Hello folks --

Good topic for discussion. I think that some people could trim their sig lines *significantly* and still get their point(s) across.

I have a sig file question for sulasmith, though:

*Where* did your sig file come from? I hadn't ever heard of this particular interview before, and I'm intrigued. Is it available in the Blue Letter Archive? I'd sure like to read it.

Thanks!

I just happened to have perused this article in the BLA the other day... It's in the section for Fleetwood Mac articles from 1997 and it's under the title Music Central dated 8/29/97.
