Timespace interview
These are old interviews I've heard over 15 years ago. For some reason they were in my suggested page and I listened again. I miss this angry Stevie vs Mick era so much. Stevie is so tranquilized that she really reveals information that I do not think she intended to tell. Some of her exaggerations are so funny. I will recap parts one and two if you dont have time to listen.
Part 1: Stevie describes her fight with Mick and how he avoided Stevie's call. Mick would not return her call so she hunted down Dennis to make him call her. Mick refused to give her Silver Springs. The way Stevie describes it is that she wanted to funnel royalties of the song to her mother. She also wanted the Mac version on Timespace. Then Stevie describes how Silver Springs was dumped from Rumours. Stevie protested but said the band "put a gun to her head" and told her that if she did not want I Dont Want To Know on the album then she would only have 2 songs. Stevie talks about her management not wanting her to do the BTM tour because they thought it was going to bomb Part 2: She says Fleetwood Mac always hated her solo career. She discusses her marriage to Kim. She admits she was insane and Kim was insane also. She said that she and him bonded visiting Robin and Mathew in the hospital for weeks. They made a pact to always take care of Mathew and 3 months after her death they were married. Stevie says her parents thought she was nuts before this decision but her parents thought she was even more nuts then before when she told them. Don Henley hung up the phone on her when she invited him to the wedding. Then Stevie revealed what a horrible person Kim was to her. Kim only allowed people at the house that he approved of and she needed permission from him. Kim never let Stevie in the nursery and the nanny took care of Mathew. She was finishing the Stand Back video and her crew was dropping her clothes off at the house and Kim would not let them inside. She also said that many times Kim thought she was Robin and it scared her. He became very controlling of her and before she left on the Wild Heart tour she asked for a divorce. She said Kim had only sent her one photo of Mathew and she never saw either of them again (1991). Really some freaky stuff revealed while she was sedated on klonopin. Omitting "Silver Springs" from Rumours is one thing. Wasting it on a B-side is far worse.
They should have assured Stevie it would go on the next album, and perhaps also assured her they'd make it the lead single. Tusk would have benefitted from its inclusion, and it would have been a good song to release as a single from it. |

Disagree. The best thing that happened for the song was exactly what happened. The whole story behind why it didn't make the album and then its resurgence through The Dance made the song have more impact than it ever would have had if it had been released on Rumours or delayed for Tusk.

Agree. It coming out at a point where her songwriting had gone so far downhill and she had lost her motivation to write was a godsend. She would not have gotten the boost in attention and popularity at a time when she needed it badly otherwise (1997). It's one of her best songs and reminded people how she could/can write if she actually tries..... Plus the video of them singing it on The Dance was perfect for social media memes, where it lives forever (even tho it pre dates the internet)

In the interview I posted Stevie claimed the band "put a gun to her head" and said if she did not consent to I Don't Want To Know then she would only get 2 songs. I think this is a reason she resents I Don't Want To Know so much to this day. So glad she survived her being held at gun point. ;) |

And I don't even think Stevie would have wanted SS to be on Tusk. She would have complained that it got stuck on an album that didn't sell. She wanted it for Timespace because she knew a greatest hits album would sell a lot and make a lot of money. |
It wouldn't have been right to include the Mac version in Timespace, IMHO. It's a Fleetwood Mac track. But I don't think recording it for this album would have turned out very well. And I don't think they wasted the song on the B-side. However, I never though it could have been in Tusk, but yes it would have fit perfect! And maybe the album would have sold more. But... it waited until 1997, and the song exploded—wonderfully. And those glances between L&S... it couldn't have been better (obviously, at the time).
Fleetwood Mac always hated her solo career? Naaaaa. Was Lindsey jealous? Yes, sometimes I guess he was. But did the band hate it? I won't spend my time commented more about it. To be fair, it’s always good to hear the other side (Kim) and find out what he thinks about that time and what he has to say. Although, to be honest, that chapter is closed—it’s in the past, and I’m not exactly dying to know. |

However box sets could be, and usually are, something different. And Enchanted seems more as a personal selection than a GH, cause it includes rare B'sides, alternate versions, tracks excluded from previous albums. So there were songs I never heard on the radio. Obviously Enchanted is not a classic GH, and for me—since I never owned all her solo albums—buying it was a good idea; I really enjoyed it. |

Yes of course its a greatest hits album but I suppose none of this was in "the book." ;) |

Ok after emphasizing that it was a joke (guys, please don't get upset), I agree about the GH as a sign of a washed up. But for many singers and bands sometimes it was a sign of a turning point. Specially those GH released at the end or beginning of a decade. I'm thinking in Queen's GH. Though they already changed their style with The Game album, their 80s albums were radically different from those of the 70s. I compare GH Vol 1 (1981) with Vol 2 (1991) and it's so evident how the band changed. Same as Madonna. The Immaculate Collection (1990) is very different than the GHV2 (2001). |

It sort of made sense for the Mac to release a Greatest Hits album in 1988. It was the end of an era and a beginning of another. It also gave the band a test case for the new members. The album sold really well but just imagine if the new line up had a big hit off it. Shockingly As Long As You Follow tanked and did not even make top 40. Having said all that I believe Greatest Hits albums are cheezy when you love the band. The better songs are always the deeper cuts. The Greatest Hits packages I have bought were from artists I was a casual fan like Billy Squire and Pat Benatar. |

One thing I hate in GHs is that some songs are cut off, shortened, etc. Like Queen's Under Pressure or Pat Benatar's We Belong (I bought the Best Shots CD). |

We got The Eagles Greatest hits volume 1 from Columbia House record club in the 1970s. It was one of the 7 albums our family could pick for 1 cent. Speaking of editing the songs. Correct me if I am wrong but when Tusk was released on CD they edited Sara. When it was placed on Greatest Hits the full song made the CD. I can remember Stevie discussing this on Rockline promoting the Greatest Hits. So Greatest Hits had the first CD full version of Sara. |
Quote:
I remember looking at the back of the CD case and seeing "Sara (edit)" at the store; I assumed it meant a slight different mix, which only piqued my curiosity further. Silly me. I never bought the green GH CD, so it was thanks to the 25 Years The Chain box set that I was able to get a full digital version of Sara (which means I bought The Very Best Of just because of ALAYF). |
It's funny...80 minutes is 80 minutes, is 80 minutes...
No amount of Stevie Nicks' witchcraftery dreaming can alter physics. :woohoo::wavey: |
I wonder how much the CD sales of Tusk would have been affected had it been released as a two-disc set to accommodate the full-length version of Sara?

Of course, the company surely chose Sara thinking that fans would feel forced to buy a later compilation containing the full version of Sara. They would be more likely to do that than for Beautiful Child. |

It was probably the longest song, which is why it suffered the fate. |
Quote:
Why is it always poor Stevie that gets the short end of the stick. They could have eliminated The Ledge and kept the full version of Sara ;) |
Quote:
But the full version was always on the original Tusk (vinyl) album. ETA: the single version, 4:37 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCL1FsLL5Oo The edit is at 2:41 Is this the same shortened version that got on the CD? |
But speaking of long versions, besides the 3/10/79 version that lasts 8:49 that came in the Deluxe edition, I got a 10:45 minute "Sara Remastered Demo" that I can't remember how I got it. It's most likely that someone here shared it many many years ago. It really has a demo sound, not much a remastered track, but it is cool to listening to it from time to time.
That reminds me again of when Stevie said she was very touchy about having her songs shortened. So, was she upset too because the vinyl album version was only 6:26 long? |

I belong to a classic sitcom message board and that is the #1 complaint over there too how TV stations edit sitcoms to make room for more commercials from their original broadcast. So many jokes are edited out it makes you nuts. Its really sad we cant have nice things because everyone wants to make more and more money. |
