Live in Sydney 1977
I had never seen this before. Chris looks so good in red and her earings. Peak performances during this time. This video includes: Say You Love Me, Oh Well, Rhiannon, You Make Loving Fun, and Go Your Own Way.

Stevie is so buzzed... you can hear it in her voice. But they were at their peak here. I laugh my azz off at the thought that it was ever even CONSIDERED that Stevie could play the acoustic guitar part on GYOW... |

Much like her arrhythmic tambourine playing, playing that part OUT OF TIME, would've ruined the song. I guess they could just mute her guitar(like her taped down tambourine jingles), and have Ray standing in the dark, backstage, playing the part, so she'd get credit. :wavey: |
Anyone remember the audio that was posted of Stevie trying to strum to GYOW. Even Stevie herself was laughing stating "I was cancelled before I got my first gig" or something like that. My memory is Lindsey really did think Stevie could play the acoustic part. But after several attempts Ray Lindsey got the nod.

Lindsey either thought he was the star of the band or thought he should be regarded as the star of the band.
But "Rhiannon" cemented Stevie as the star. At some point the song became neutered and a shadow of what it once was, but during this period Stevie breathed fire into it. |

Maybe its just me but one of the best moments in the Mirage concert is the beginning of YMLF. Right before Chris starts to sing Stevie comes on stage and it looks like Chris is giving side eye to Stevie. I wish I could have read her mind. The band tried not to let Stevie become the lead singer with the media and it clearly drove them nuts. Stevie never had a lead single off any of Mac albums. Besides one side of Tusk, Stevie never had the first song either side A or B of an album. |
I'll address the rest separately, but as for singles: With the possible exception of "Dreams" (because of "GYOW"), "Rhiannon" "Dreams" and "Gypsy" (especially "Gypsy") are the obvious lead singles from their respective albums. Even with Say You Will, my choice for lead single would have been "Everybody Finds Out."

Of course this never happened. Stevie has zero discipline or focus to play an instrument well more than once. Rick Beato just posted an interview with Billy Joel and listening to him talk about piano playing, songwriting, etc. made me think of her ping-ping-ping demos. While I actually love them, still.... cringeworthy when in the company of actual musicians. That said, she's the multi-millionaire, not me so........ |
[QUOTE=bombaysaffires;1306046]Christine even said in an interview (Keyboard mag I think) that while Stevie wasn't a "great" piano player, Chris felt she should play something onstage just for the credibility of it.

I mean they obviously should have been the lead singles, not that they were.

This entire band's history is "should have".... |

Watch Mirage, with the guitar solo(that later got cut from their shows), and the demonic exorcism of her singing, before she started always playing it safe. What does the book say? :woohoo::wavey::woohoo: |
I love everything else about Mirage but the Rhiannon is terrible. Besides being neutered its also slowed down on the Mirage tour.
Shame because Waddy and her band did a noble job on her solo tour only to return to the Mac and flame out on Rhiannon. Ironically during the Klonopin haze the 1991 Timespace Rhiannon kicks ass. |

Nor did I see the Ann Wilson interview. But I know the Wilson sisters had majority ownership in the band, so as long as they stuck together they could fire anyone they wanted. My sense is that more than anything is the critical factor behind all the comings and goings. Also original lead guitarist Robert Fischer cheated on Nancy, which proved to be the death knell for his tenure in the group. It's not analogous to Lindsey and Stevie because, unlike Ann and Nancy, at that point they were not the bosses. (In time Stevie would attain the power position, notwithstanding her assertion to the contrary.) |

I've always felt chris really changed the way she dressed after stevie joined. All of a sudden she was wearing those tiny, short-shorts w the high boots, and sexy little tops, she put feathers in her hair and had those platform sandals... I suppose this might have happened anyway just due to the fashions changing, but i think trying to present a bit of a "sexier image" as a woman may have been part of it, too. --Lis |
Just like Lindsey, Chris knew she had TEN TIMES THE TALENT of Stevie.
"Oh look, the little hippy dippy chick that the whole world wants to F, is getting all of the attention".... That would be a tough pill for anyone to swallow... |

Yes the name "Stevie Nicks" was more famous. But we know that Christine's personality wasn't that of someone who wanted to be a star, in the spotlight, so I think the jealousy must have been fleeting. Did she feel that her contributions to the albums were sometimes underrated? Not from the critics, I always read good reviews of Christine in the magazines, they valued her contribution highly. |
I also agree it was not a big deal and would be natural to have a little jealousy. It had to drive the other members crazy that Stevie was getting the lion share of the applause (direct quote from Rolling Stone 1982). Stevie's Rhiannon dance wearing thin on Lindsey in New Zealand in 1980. But post cocaine Stevie turned it way down especially after Lindsey left. Stevie made sure to not do long walks along the audience and stayed on stage for many more songs than her cocaine years. Klonopin also assisted in this mission with Stevie fading into the background of the band.
Anyone agree with me that Chris gives Steive side eye when she comes on stage for YMLF on the HBO Mirage show. At 0:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD-y...&start_radio=1 |

I remember many ledgies were disappointed with Stevie’s Rhiannon performance in The Dance, because of her lack of energy, she was more calm, slow, etc. compared with her 70s and Mirage shows. I wasn’t. I understand she decide to take care of her voice, her health, etc. She was sober by 1997 so it was easier for her to control herself. Yes she was so effusive, emotional, full of energy singing during that great 70s era. But also out of control many times. It is easy to realize those shows damaged her voice in the long term. And let’s remember when we commented about the mistakes she made at the 1982 US festival, like forgetting to get back in time to the microphone, etc. You can't control everything when you're doing cocaine, and it always gets worse. So by 1997 she couldn’t repeat those mistakes. By the way, my favorite Rhiannon is where she sings Is that what you want from me!!! I love that line. It’s in Tusk Deluxe, I guess it is Tucson 1980. |
I agree it's impossible, without seeing the others, to say whether Christine is giving Stevie (or someone else) side eye.
My impression, hampered as it is absent such context, is that someone on stage does something that catches Christine's attention and causes her to glance over. |

;) If I could freeze that screen with Chris the bubble over her head would say "Dear Lord here she comes again out of the tent banging that bloody contraption again. I hope she remembered to wipe her nose this time HBO cameras are all over the place." |

Just my impression, mind you – nothing declarative. Carry on as you were.

She looks down at her hands (sometimes) especially on that song because of the quick changes. It's part of why I love watching her play. She's a total pro. |
