Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits rerelease
So I just saw that Rhino is rereleasing the 1988 Greatest Hits on vinyl AND CD, with several more tracks added, such as the Chain, Silver Springs live, Think About Me, Never Going Back Again, Oh Diane, Landslide, and a few more. Noticeably NOT included are any singles released from Behind the Mask or Time, or even any of the 4 new songs from The Chain boxset. So unfortunately, Christine gets the short end of the stick here.
|
This is about 20 years overdue. How they left off Think About Me on the original is a crime. The song is not even 3 minutes and it could not fit? You can hear the live version of Silver Springs on The Dance. They should have included the studio version. But all of you Seven Wonders fans shall rejoice! But at least Oh Diane made the cut

Notice they didn't include Sweet Girl, Temporary One, Bleed To Love Her, Say You Will, Peacekeeper, Sad Angel, or Without You either. |
Well, it was that or the two hundred and seventy-fourth special edition of Rumours.
As a fan, there are several singles I would have included. But I don't know if they should be considered "hits". Though I wouldn't buy it anyway, cause I think I have all songs and repeated. Unless they were unreleased/demo/alternative/early versions. Because that's usually what you'd find in a DELUXE edition, which doesn't seem to be the case this time. |
Why is Love In Store neglected again? It was the third single from a #1 album. It charted rather well for not having a video in the peak MTV era. It hit #22 for 3 weeks
Mirage had songs cockblocked like crazy. Hold Me 7 weeks at #4. Gypsy 3 weeks at #12 and Love in Store 3 weeks at #22 which made these singles much bigger than their chart peaks. BTW. I see that Stevie's rehab during Gypsy's video shoot made Wikipedia. She could not get through the shoot without cocaine and the shoot could not be rescheduled. She had a miserable experience making the video. Nicks especially remembers the experience as unpleasant. Two weeks before the shoot, she had gone into drug rehabilitation to try to overcome her cocaine addiction. However, the video shoot could not be rescheduled, and she had to take a break for it. Near the end of the first of three days of the shoot, Nicks was exhausted and said she needed cocaine. A small bottle was discreetly given to her, though it was thrown out before she could use any. Nicks later said, "I think we would probably have gone on to make many more great videos like 'Gypsy' had we not been so into drugs."[21] The aforementioned issues Nicks was having were further strained by having to work closely with her former boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham. "We weren't getting along well then. I didn't want to be anywhere near him; I certainly didn't want to be in his arms," Nicks said of the scene where the two are dancing. "If you watch the video, you'll see I wasn't happy. And he wasn't a very good dancer."[21] In 1983, the music video received an award of Special Merit during the American Video Awards.[22] Stevie hated dancing with Lindsey. Now I want to know who threw out the bottle of cocaine? We need answers!!!!! |

Were Monday Morning, Second Hand News, and Gold Dust Woman not singles or hits? They’re not on this track listing.

She was jetting all over the place in 1981 but almost impossible to get clean during a major album promotion and upcoming tour. Lesson learned. No wonder they stayed separate and filmed alone during the Hold Me video. I also think the Mirage tour left a bad taste in Lindsey's mouth and did not want to repeat it with Tango even though it was originally also going to be a short US tour. |
Another thing that does not make sense is they include As Long As You Follow and No Questions Asked with that lineup but don't include that lineup's only top 40 hit Save Me?
Should not a Greatest Hits package include the hits? |

I guess they included As Long As You Follow and No Questions Asked because they took the original GH and said Ok, for a deluxe edition let's take the original and just add more songs.
But whoever decided the final tracklist should have awakened more of their neuronas and make it better. Well, I'm a bit sarcastic, cause it's also true that you can't please everybody. For example, I'm not crazy about "Save Me." Whether they include it or not wouldn't affect me (if I wanted to buy this album). But other songs would. |

First world problems I know. But this highlights the oddity of ignoring the Vito/Burnette era of the band. They cannot remove No Questions Asked but cant inclued Save Me? Never Going Back Again? |

Just for example, I remember local radios played some B sides of Donna Summer singles much more than the actual single. Like Winter Melody(side B) much more than Spring Affair (the official single). But none of those two were included in On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II. And talking about “the best”, I was checking the US 2002 release and UK 2009 re-release of “The Very Best Of”, they did include ALAYF, NQA, Skies the Limit and Paper Doll. And 50 Years – Don't Stop is a compilation album that seems more like a box set than a GH (there’s a difference) cause they did included Save Me, Peacekeeper, Love Shines, but... no BTM songs of Rick or Billy. Answer: Money, money, money! Must be funny in the rich man's world. |

My Theory is that this is an easy way to get a "new" cheaper vinyl best of album out there to make more money from. I think the CD version is a bit of an afterthought. Don't Stop 50 Years does have all the tracks on this comp but at a 5 LP set it's going to be more expensive than this.
Although i'd still probably buy a proper FM singles collection compilation if ever they decided to release it. |
The Greatest Hits Deluxe Edition will be released July 31.
Since Deluxe Editions always included demos in the past, I’m kind of surprised Paper Doll didn’t make the cut, as it was originally recorded for the GH album, only to be replaced by No Questions Asked. Apparently, Mick sent Paper Doll to Lindsey and asked him to do what he could do with it, so he made whatever changes he did and it was released on the Chain box set. Would have been nice to have either the before or after version included here. I agree that Love in Store should have been included. There was certainly room for it. I suspect the preponderance of Christine and Stevie songs are why those two songs weren’t included, and a desire to include more Lindsey songs were why Oh Diane and Never Going Back Again were placed instead. I get it. The fact that Save Me wasn’t included gives me hope that Behind the Mask will get a Deluxe Edition at some point. Yes, I’m admittedly biased about that prospect, as I love that album, but if they’re doing a Deluxe Edition of their GH, then they are clearly desperate to milk their legacy for all they can. They may release a DE of Say You Will, but with 18 songs, there probably aren’t a lot of extras, and a live CD/DVD was already released of that album/tour. The Dance will probably be next, and then hopefully BTM and Time will be rereleased together. |
They're NOT rereleasing BTM and Time.
Those albums are in the Bob Welch category of- Things That Never Happened For $1000, Alex. |

They didn’t place any Billy, Rick, Bekka, or Dave songs on the 2018 50 Years “compilation.” But I would even say that it’s more likely that Heroes Are Hard To Find would get a deluxe edition release than BTM getting one given how Mick, John, Christine, and Stevie never spoke about the songs from that album from 2018 on. But yet they performed a song written by Welch. Of course they also did a song written by Danny and a number of songs by Peter. |
I can easily see The Dance getting a deluxe Blu-Ray release with the entire concert being released on CD and digital. I could be wrong but isn't Gypsy the only performance from the concert that hasn't been released outside of the special Best Buy set?

One cool thing about the Greatest Hits DE is that the label isn’t combining the vinyls and CDs in one package. I understand Behind the Mask was not a hit. However, it did go gold, and maybe even platinum. Say You Will charted much higher, but probably sold about the same as BTM. Most of the pre-Buckingham Nicks albums barely went gold, and the label repackaged them a few years back. Maybe the most I can hope for is a remaster, but there’s enough material to add an extra disc. With the label rereleasing every album, I don’t believe they won’t rerelease an album with Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks. |

More than asking why they left this or that song.. I wonder who defines the tracklist for a compilation album?
This can be divided into two questions: Who is involved in the song selection and putting together the list? And... who makes the final decision? |
I was listening to a music vlogger today that is speculating the re-release of the Greatest Hits package is the groundwork for a Fleetwood Mac reunion. Lindsey has dropped many hints about playing the Forum again, etc. This could be another reason why the Hits release is loaded up with more Lindsey tunes while ignoring charting singles of Chris.
I am already cringing hearing Stevie butcher Don't Stop And how the look during Silver Springs is going to mean Stevie and Lindsey are back in love. If they do Oh Diane this board will light up like a Christmas Tree. They will milk this for all that its worth. Mick will have his tin can ready for the $1000 meet and greets and selling replicas of Biddy's britches. Just wait |

I hope they've realized that this would further damage the legacy that's already been damaged since 2018. Organizing a tour, playing Christine's songs, etc., No no. I don't see that as a good idea To say the least. |

FOR FUKCS SAKE, PULL THE FUKCING PLUG. But Lindsey wants to die being a rock star. "Hey Lindsey, your stupid ex girlfriend ruined that when she got you fired 8 years ago. That ship has sailed!" |

And now he supposedly wants to be a rock star? I don't think so. Too late by the way. I think he simply wants to stay active, and if he is seriously thinking about reunions, I wouldn't rule out a financial motive as well. |
Sheryl Crow is doing vocal training to Oh Diane.

And he can stay as active SOLO as he wants to be, playing to small crowds. Tell me he doesn't have plenty of money.... he wants to go out on top. In what would/will be a pathetic geriatric version of the band of my life. Did I mention that you're wrong? :D |

his definition of that is different than Stevie's but he loves the big life. Mick hit the nail on the head in the Destiny Rules doc when he had that discussion with Lindsey where LB went on about how he didn't care about how many copies the album would sell as long as he got to make his artistic vision...and then later Mick is talking to one of the crew (I think it was Ray Lindsey) and saying that he (Mick) does not for one minute believe that Lindsey wouldn't be upset if the album didn't sell. Mick called out Lindsey for comparing himself to a film director who makes films that are great but don't sell a lot. Mick cracked that unlike that director Lindsey would NOT be happy in a one bedroom apartment in Pacoima. And Mick was right. Lindsey lived/lives a very very rich person life. His homes are LUXE. And he's made very lucrative real estate investments in LA over the decades. What he wants from FM isn't the money as much as the prestige, the success, to still be a "player" in the biz, to be recognized for his musical genius..... to cement his legacy with a big blowout and not a quiet fading away. And he wants to compete with Stevie, always has. |
I saw Lindsey's solo tour in 2018 and I was in the front row. He played so incredibly hard and sweat was coming off him like crazy. His facial expressions were like nothing I saw from him before. It was almost if he was an unknown auditioning to join a band or something. To say he gave 110% would be an understatement. He was playing for just a few hundred fans and he was thriving off the audience. Long story short......I don't know when it happened but Lindsey really gets off on being a rock star. Yes in the past he hated the machine and performing for the masses may not have been his thing. He said he much preferred the studio. But SYW and beyond Lindsey is a different man than he was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

It’s the kids.
When you’re a parent it changes your perspective, your measure of success and what your goals are. I have no doubt Lindsey wants to be big for his kids. I think he especially changed when he became a family man |

Perhaps it's a paradigm I have, but if I compare Lindsey with Prince, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Ozzy, Cher, Madonna, David Lee Roth or Elton, I can't say Lindsey is a star like them; a quality that does not define whether the musical artistic talent is very good or not. And I see my paradigm coincides with a definition I just found, a description that Stevie does come close to: Historically and culturally, a rock star is someone who embodies the glamorous and often rebellious lifestyle of rock 'n' roll. The Persona: They are often seen as sexy, outrageous, and unapologetic. The Archetype: While the genre has evolved, the iconic image typically involves a dynamic frontman or lead guitarist leading a stadium performance, backed by dedicated fans and intense media attention. (ok Lindsey fits in here, except for the media attention, I don't think it is that intense) Famous Examples: Iconic rock stars include figures like Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger |
Its going to be called Fleetwood Mac's Frozen Love tour. They will add a few Buckingham Nicks songs in the set. Summer 2027
