Stevie and John interview (1987)

This is wonderful and I never saw this before. This Tango era interview had Chris and Lindsey on the same couch interviewed and now it's Stevie and John. Stevie looks beautiful here almost off her Seven Wonders video. But gurl that dress is wearing you. Those puffy shoulders and the dress up to the chin makes her look like a villian from Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. Its the most ridiculous dress I have ever seen her in. But in 1987 that electric blue and puffy shoulders were all the rave. Look how long her nails are. Early 1987 and peak 80s fashion. The sad part is Stevie's eyes. You can see she is tranquilized and it makes you want to scream. The way Stevie sways back and forth during the interview is a sign of impairment. The most famous scene from these interviews is Stevie and Lindsey on the couch. She has an identical black dress on. It must of been buy one get one free. Gotta love the 80s. So glam.

And it's the same couch of the interview of Stevie, Mick and Rick I shared in other thread. I wonder how many artists have sat on it. They should interview it; I know that couch has a lot of stories to tell.

And yes, the dress looks funny, if not ridiculous, but it's the 80s fashion. It didn't remind me the characters you mention, but the extravaganza style that Alexis and Krystle sometimes used. Now we may say they often went too far, too.

I don’t mind the dress, it sort a of suits her..especially the colour.
She can hardly keep her eyes open, poor woman.
Is the tranquilliser causing the slight body swaying…maybe.

I think John looks cool in that laid back way of his.

The sad part is that she fell into that because of a doctor's prescription, to avoid the temptation to relapse into coke use, or so I read. It seems that the swaying is in time with her breathing, or maybe just my impression. But she answered fine, I mean I've seen people with the effects of clonazepam, and believe me, it's much worse. Also my friend from LA who saw the Mac in late 1987 told me that she performed very bad, like a zombie, barely reacting.

I wonder if she had seen a different doctor while/after recovering from cocaine addiction, who could have assured her of a healthier rehab, how different the story would have been. Like a butterfly effect since 1987? Probably many of the things that happened would have happened anyway. But others wouldn't have.

80s fashions were awful but I've seen worse than this dress lol.

And john was totally smoking hot around this time. I have this interview on audio tape but have never seen the video.

Stevie wore some wild s**t around this time in early 1987. She had this blue dress and an identical black dress that she wore during this same interview project. I suppose she could not decide between black and blue and someone decided to wear both. But maybe she or someone saw how ridiculous the dress looked and she changed to black. Her Big Love dress with all of the musical notes on it was very 80s too. They are so 80s glam and I remember how happy it was during this time. A FM album after 5 years and MTV was gearing up and the tour. It sort of all came crashing down in a few months. You can see they all just came off shooting those 3 videos because the all look so similar to how they were in the videos.

This was 1981 but it doesn't look so 80s.

Early 80s weren't so bad... i think from 1983 on it got worse with thick shoulder pads, boxy jackets, big bulky styles etc. so unflattering.

The early 80s were conservative. Men cut their hair and even women were wearing shorter hair. It was a major clean up from the late 1970s. Mid 80s Madonna hit and styles got really loud. By the time the late 80s hit it was very glam, big hair, and loud colors.

One late 80s trend that I miss that only lasted about 2 years was the white washed denim. In the Tango live concert, Stevie has a white washed denim jacket on for Everywhere, correct? I remember in early 1988 my last year in high school I went to JC Penney and bought a white washed denim jacket. You would have thought I bought a new Ferrari. I was so proud of it and could not wait to wear it to high school the next day and got all the compliments. White washed denim was a fast trend. It started in 1986 and by late 1988 it was already crashing out. BTW, I also got a pair of matching white washed jeans.

wow you had the whole ensemble! the guy i had a crush on in HS had a whitewashed denim jacket w rolled up cuffs by the wrists. i thought he was the bomb w his longish scruffy hair.

i think by 86 the fluorescent stuff was in.. bright earrings that matched your top, weird slashes of colors on shirts or on our Nike high tops, lots of gel in the hair... i don't think i ever owned whitewashed jeans though lol

Physiatrists have a lot to answer for, when they prescribe drugs like Klonopin that have bad side effects.

Was it the same as "stone wash" jeans? That's how they called here, yes in english. And they said they were called that because it was inspired by how native americans washed clothes in the river. But some of them weren't whited; it was the same style, but the lighter parts had a greenish tint. I don't know if it was a faulty process from cheap brands or if they did it on purpose, but they looked really ugly to me.

Thats a good question. I had to use google to confirm my hunch. Stone washed jeans go way back. They were lighter and had a sort of worn in look to them. They were more comfortable to wear. White washed jeans was a fad that actually used acid or bleach to give a streaky and light white color on the denim. I suppose they are a tad similar but I remember buying stone washed jeans in the late 70s. White washed jeans and denim was a quick fad in the late 80s.

From google:

Stone wash jeans feature a faded, worn-in look achieved by tumbling denim with abrasive pumice stones in industrial washers. This process removes surface dye to create unique, vintage patterns while making the fabric exceptionally soft

White/acid-washed jeans—White washed jeans are denim garments treated with bleaching agents to dramatically fade the original dark indigo or black dye, resulting in an exceptionally light, sun-bleached look. This process leaves the pants with an off-white, ice-blue, or pale gray hue

I would say stone washed jeans had a worn look to them and they were lighter denim and comfortable
White washed jeans take it to the next level with parts of denim being white and almost look like a tye-dye jeans in bleach or acid. It was not for comfort like stone washed it was strictly for a bolder look. White washed jeans were also known as acid washed jeans depending on where you lived. I think acid washed jeans is more proper. I grew up in Appalachia and we had different names for lots of things so I apologize for confusion.

e
.

Can't remember the quality, I don't know if they were lighter, I never bought one, about jeans I've always been a classic guy. Yes, perhaps some had a worn appearance that simulated a "rustic" look. But I'm pretty sure "stone wash" in Peru was a brief and temporary fad too, can't remember the exact year but it was mid 80s cause I was in college and some friends used them.

Thanks for sharing this, Macfan4life. While I agree the puffy sleeves and high collar do Stevie absolutely no favors, that color blue is stunning. If only she would wear something in another color now besides black.

I don’t think her swaying is related to Klonopin, anymore than I think John is slumped in the couch because he’s drunk. Both seem relaxed (lol) and maybe it is related to pills and alcohol, but I don’t watch this video and see two messed up rockstars. I’m sure I’m going to be accused of “FM and especially Stevie can do no wrong” but yeah, except for the horrible shape/cut of Stevie’s dress, I think they both look great here.

With everything we know about the 80s' Stevie it's easy to say Hey she is drugged up, sedated, whatever, after she said What was I going to say? I may have lost this whole thing. But actually that has happened to me dozen of times, and to friends, while being sober; sometimes one goes on for so long explaining something that one forgets what one was originally going to answer.

But I see she is sincere when mentions Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc. and says I wanted to arrive in the helicopter..., etc. I mean, she dreamed of being a star, no doubt. I don't think Christine ever answered the same, correct me if I'm wrong. They were different persons. John's answer was also completely different, and very simple.

Whether being very different people made things easier or harder in the band, I guess it depended on the situation.

Stevie always wanted to be a star. Keith Olsen said she was going to be a "nobody or a superstar there was no in between."
In 2000 she revealed parts of her journal on the NicksFix. The ending to almost every entry was "walk like a queen."
But IMHO the biggest clue to her stardom was the letter she wrote her parents while recording Buckingham Nicks in the studio. It was not a normal child to parent letter. She wrote it as if she was already a superstar.

I don't think either John or Chris ever wanted to be a 'rock star...' they were more introverted and probably didn't dream of fame and helicopters lol. I'd guess being very different helped the group over time in certain ways...like it's good that stevie and chris were so opposite, they never really had to compete as women. and maybe it was good that J&C were so similar because it kept them kind of on the same page in all the years after the divorce, whereas L&S seemed quite different as people and ended up with a bit more friction. and Mick to me seems kind of like a chameleon who can adapt himself to various personalities to work towards a positive outcome.

chris once said about the band that they were "five quite strong minded, quite stubborn individuals, but somehow it seems to gel and we can always arrive at a musical agreement." and Lindsey has said that on paper you wouldn't think these people should all be in a band together lol. but the chemistry just worked. (with some ups and downs..)

they've always been such an interesting group of people.

That's an excellent summary of the five and their dynamics.

INTERVIEWER: Mick has recorded in Africa. Mirage was in Switzerland. So tell me -- why record in L.A.? The least exotic place. Where you live.
STEVIE and JOHN look at each other
STEVIE: ...Because we live there.

I guffawed out loud at this.

As soon as John actually starts talking, the interviewer erupts into a coughing fit and crew members start walking in front of the camera. I'm reminded of the Destiny Rules documentary, where Mick keeps answering all the questions and won't let John get a word in.

WHAT? Had Switzerland gone to war with France and seized Hérouville? That's brand new information! Who was that interviewer who had such exclusive info?

John is least interviewed in part by design on his part....especially in the later years he really absented himself from either individual or group interviews.

Re Chris and John, it's a very British thing (esp the English) to NOT make a spectacle of yourself. (Mick is something of the exception here). Brits have that dry, sharp humor that pops the ego balloon of anyone who gets too full of themselves or starts to think they're the center of everything. It's considered rather unseemly to flaunt your ego or your success around. That's why I love watching some of the behind the scenes stuff, especially in the earlier years of the 5 where Chris will say something that initially sounds kind of neutral but if you know Brits she is in fact skewering them... It's fascinating to watch especially when it goes right over the Americans' heads, especially Stevie.

oh yes i totally get that. and I adore the dry, sharp humor of both McVies! I have an old interview somewhere where chris was saying how the Americans half the time couldn't tell when the Brits were serious or when they were joking with them... it must have been a constant state of thinking, 'wait... Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way... Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon :)

I’ve always found funny in Destiny Rules doc at 1:02:10, after John's long speech about his bass parts when Mick says I want to say something, and John You’ve said enough, Jesus Christ!

Ken wrote in his Rumours book about the first time he met Christine, I remember she said something to him that, when I read it, seemed rather unfriendly to me. I don't remember what she said; it was a long time ago that I read that book, which I no longer have. But as I continued reading, I saw that Ken took it as a harmless funny sarcastic remark. And as he got to know her better, his opinion of her was very good, which was obvious and predictable.

Quiet desperation ? I prefer stoicism…

I’m not keen on Pink Floyd at all…(apart from Gilmour’s guitar playing))
I’m not a fan of their type psychedelic/prog rock or political, social lyrics.
So obv. I could be wrong.

yes, didn't she say he had an ugly shirt or something? and later there was another comment along the lines of, 'Ken, will you stop that mindless whistling!?' lmao

I think one of Chris's funniest stage moments was during late in the OWTS shows Stevie would introduce Chris and explain how she came back to the band. Stevie would imitate Chris's British accent in the most horrible way and try to talk like Chris. That alone was funny enough. But a few shows Chris would answer back in an equally bad British accent imitating Stevie's horrible impression of her.

true. but i'd say her very long and mainly positive relationship with john showed that things between them, for the most part, were pretty good. both of them had addiction issues so he can't take all the blame on that one... but i do think he felt shame over his drunken mistakes... She obviously forgave them...

Wasn't it, "that's a stupid fukcing shirt you're wearing, Ken"?

Since this thread had an analytical tone about fashion, I must say I liked that Chris gypsy look. Must be from the 70s.

But that dark haircut, and also the dress, is that really Christine? It's from a fan group post so it must be her. What year or tour is that? The 80s were unique, it had many extravaganza moments. :D

But that dark haircut, and also the dress, is that really Christine? It's from a fan group post so it must be her. What year or tour is that? The 80s were unique, it had many extravaganza moments. :D

Yeah that's definitely her.. I'd say 76? That was more the gypsy look era. The early 80s got "heavier" sort of styles, not so much long skirts and loose tops anymore.. at least from where I lived and what I remember.

I think her hair looks darker here because her head is in the shadows and she's got the dark background behind her. Her natural hair color tended toward a dirty blonde. She lightened it often throughout the years. Sometimes she let it go darker for a while. I loved love loved her longer and fuller hair in the Tango era and the video for...was it Everywhere where they were mulling around a farm/barn kind of space? (Lindsey in his riding boots and eraser hair). Her hair was GORGEOUS then. After she rejoined and got that clip out of her hair and went lighter and fuller with extensions and stuff she was STUNNING.

She had the hippy/gypsy look of the times in the early 70s before Stevie ever came along.
