Buckingham Nicks Reached the Top 10 (in the UK)

According to Billboard's Chart Beat column, Cardi B is essentially guaranteed to secure the number one spot on the US Billboard 200, although they did dedicate a few paragraphs to Buckingham Nicks, essentially indicating that it could have a promising debut.

A longtime collectors’ favorite, this early full-length collaboration between then-future Fleetwood Mac superstars Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks — self-titled under the name Buckingham Nicks — had been out of print for many decades. As the Mac catalog has proved a persistent cultural force time and time again across those years, there have been countless calls from fans for the album to once again see the light of day.

Finally, through the efforts of Rhino Records — and with the cooperation of both artists, who have been largely on the outs since Buckingham’s 2018 split from the rest of the group — the much-beloved set has at last been reissued, arriving both on streaming services and in record stores. For the latter, the set is available on CD and through multiple vinyl variants — its first-ever pressing on CD — and while it’s unlikely to challenge Cardi B’s overall numbers this week, you can bet those who have waited generations to get their hands on a copy will jump at the chance to finally own the record.

I'm not sure about the reliability of this following website, but Hits reported that Buckingham Nicks shifted 41,000 units in the US as of Tuesday, of which 40,000 were attributed to physical album sales. I would assume that preorders comprise a sizable portion of this. This places Buckingham Nicks at number six by the middle of the running chart week, which is set to conclude Thursday at 11:59 p.m. A top ten debut is not necessarily guaranteed though, as other albums could catch up. Buckingham Nicks is posting rather poor streaming numbers, which is not an entirely promising sign.

In the UK, Buckingham Nicks is at number five on the Official Albums Chart Update listing, which documents "sales of CDs, downloads, vinyl, audio and video streams" from Friday - Sunday. The official UK charts should be published around the middle of the day on Friday, the same day that the Ireland and New Zealand charts will be published. Fleetwood Mac has generally performed well in these countries, so I'll be curious to see how the album charts there.

My thoughts, too.

Fans do crazy things often. I wouldn't call them idiots for doing that. I won't buy it cause I'm satisfied with the digital tracks I got years ago. But if I wanted to, $15 (CD) or $23 (vinyl) plus tax and shipping is not big deal, IMO. I'm sure some fans would buy it for the book, pictures, etc. even though it seems that there are not many photos. I also think it could reach a high position at first, but it won't last much.

Anyway, don't digital (iTunes, mp3) sales count for the charts?

Ok that second one is weird.... the chick says she already has an original version of the album but then she holds up a poster of the colorized image that is the BACK of the original LP and says that THAT is what the original *front* cover of the album looks like...then she holds up the poster showing the *actual* original album cover which is B&W image and says "even though the cover is going to now look like this"

Billboard counts pre-orders toward an album's sales numbers. Seeing that pre-orders began a few months ago, it's conceivable that the album has sold 40,000 copies. And yes, digital downloads are also accounted for when tabulating album sales.

Buckingham Nicks is at #6 in the UK in the new album chart. Rumours is on its 1116th week there, so there's some catching up to do.

Yes, this is a terrific debut; it's the second highest peak position out of any one of their solo albums, with only Other Side of the Mirror beating it out (#3). Elsewhere, 50 Years: Don't Stop was pushed down to number 11 and Rumours is at #22. Here are the chart peaks for Buckingham Nicks thus far:

UK: #6
Netherlands: #10
Germany: #15
Australia: #30
Sweden: #37
Ireland: #42

Not bad for an album released in 1973.

Could this album actually chart in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 in the United States? If it charts at 6 or 7 that would be as high as Stevie's last two albums, and it would be Lindsey's highest non-FM charting album!

Interesting. Nothing against the album but it shows how fewer and fewer people are buying music. 21 years ago Christine issued In The Meantime. Unless you were an avid Fleetwood Mac fan people did not even know it existed. It had zero promotion and sold only 50k copies which was considered terrible. In 2017 Buckingham McVie sold 22k copies its first week and debuted in the top 20. It made it to #3 on the sales chart. It sold another 19k copies in the UK. It was considered a mild success. Buckingham Nicks sold 40k copies its first week and its trending everywhere how much its selling. There is a difference between the sales charts and billboard charts. I sort of look at this with different glasses on. An album this iconic that has been never officially released in over 50 years just sells 40k copies. No one buys music anymore. My question is if Buckingham Nicks ties In The Meantime in sales is it a success?

....

Definitely yes, the business model has changed a lot. Though in the case of ITM, Christine admitted that went wrong by not promoting it, not flying for in-person promotions, and of course, not doing the tour. I think if she had done al that , it wouldn't have been a top 1 but I guess the numbers would have been higher.

About BN sales, well they are not on the road either, they are not promoting together, not even interviews. Just the social media posts. But they have an ace up their sleeves, the Rumours soap opera. Always that story for casual fans or new public. All articles about the re release mention it.

A key difference here is that nearly a decent number of people who would have purchased Buckingham Nicks have already heard it in some capacity. Had the album been reissued during the infancy of the internet, perhaps around the time that The Dance was released, it probably would have posted far better numbers. There are certainly some newer fans to Fleetwood Mac and Buckingham Nicks, but given that 52 years has passed since the original release, some individuals who would have otherwise purchased the album are no longer alive to do so. Most albums released over 50 years ago have little to no appeal unless they were recorded by a major artist. It's great that anyone is willing to buy this album. Plus, the official numbers have yet to be announced, so they could be a little under or over 40,000. Hits Daily Double has the number at around 36,000, which is close to the original estimates.

Thank you. This is the Billboard 200? It seems media was hyping the sales up. Is this reissue even being sold in stores? I thought it could only be purchased from the Rhino website. Too bad but Stevie and Lindsey already made their money:laugh:

Yes, Billboard 200 Albums. Record stores were selling it. Some even hosted listening parties with additional BN merch...a poster, print, and t-shirts.

Yeah, it probably would have performed better if L and S actually made an effort with some public appearances.

Something tells me it's not Lindsey that was the one holding those public appearances back. But I am just guessing there.

bombaysaffires 09-28-2025 05:07 PM

what about streaming? where are those numbers reported? that's how everyone I know my age and younger gets their music. There are songs that have literally billions of streams...that's the new bragging rights in recent years over hard media (vinyl, cd etc) sales.

Does anyone know how well the album is doing and/or how well certain songs are doing on Spotify or Apple Music etc??

ok I decided to find answers to my own question. here's the summary of Spotify stats as of today, and I corroborated these are in fact the numbers being reported today directly on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/6nJtQBCRUwPIMy4YXXUnAb

Here are some specific stats for this artist on Spotify:
Monthly Listeners: 647,536
Popular Tracks:
"Crying in the Night" is their most popular track on Spotify.

I was wondering about this. It's possible that the album did better in countries where Buckingham Nicks wasn't originally available. In the States, most fans already had the original release, subsequent reissues, and even a few bootleg copies. So maybe it was just the hardcore fans who bought the recent reissues. I saw someone here posting numbers like 40,000 units, which is comparatively lower than everything else currently selling in the US Top 10. I would be surprised if it doesn't debut in the Top 20 though, and it would make me a little sad too. :D

It would have been amazing if the album made the top 10 in the US. Supposedly 24 Karat Gold sold 33,000 copies in its first week and charted at #7 in 2014. So 40,000 seems like a solid number for an album from 1973 and to my knowledge isn't being sold at stores like Target, Best Buy, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, FYE - can't think of other stores that sell music.

It seems like they focused on their online sales. Those stores sell the album, just not in their brick and mortars. Maybe they thought the sight of two naked people from the '70s on a 12" album cover wouldn't look great to the average person.

I'm happy that album is out, but sure, they could have added some bonus tracks and picked a different cover for the reissue. That's what they did for Christine's In the Meantime reissue. The McVie estate must have unanimously vetoed the original photoshopped cover.

I think we know who holds all the cards in any of these decisions... so much so that, according to Lindsey a few years ago, Stevie somehow managed to get physical possession of the original masters so..... possession being 9/10ths of the law and all...

I'm kind of shocked there was agreement in whatever form to get it out at all after all these years.....so...there's that.

I'm wondering who started the push - I'm guessing Rhino, not Lindsey or Stevie.
I can't believe this release happened after Lindsey was fired. No live Blu-Ray/DVD/album of the 2018 Fleetwood Mac - "the new Fleetwood Mac."

But they put up a giant billboard in LA of Stevie & Lindsey. It's incredible to me how almost 8 years since the firing, all roads led back to Stevie and Lindsey.

I guess Rhino too.

And yes I'd have found this release interesting if there were bonus tracks, early versions, etc. But I think the original cover is ok. It's been so long since the original release that I think it's cool the album have the same appearance on the outside. But from what I've read, it should have contained more photos, a richer booklet/sleeve, etc.

WalkAThinLine. 09-29-2025 07:43 AM

According to Chart Beat, Buckingham Nicks was not listed in the top 10. The number ten album posted sales of 32,000, which means that numbers were weaker than expected. We'll have a better idea of where the album actually charted on Tuesday. Some bonus tracks could have enticed a few more people to purchase the album. It also does not help that the album's streaming numbers have been rather lackluster. I'll be curious to see if Buckingham Nicks charts higher than Buckingham McVie, which debuted at number 17.

I see Rumours (#31) and GH (#98) are still in the Billboard 200 week of sep 27 list. Both have dropped a few positions. I wonder if this BN release will motivate people to listen this albums, or buy them if they don't have them. I'd like to motivate them to look for the other Mac albums.

There is not an adult contemporary albums list, is there? I see there is a list for songs, but not albums. If there were, maybe BN could be listed there.

Fleetwood Mac is no stranger to just missing the top ten. Both "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me" peaked at number 11 on the US Billboard singles chart. Billboard{{'s}} methodology seems to weigh streaming considerably, and Buckingham Nicks heavily lacked in that department.

For pre-orders, sales are not counted by ''Billboard'' until the album is delivered. From scouting around the Internet, there may have been a slight backlog in delivering these albums. That would suggest that a few thousand pre-ordered copies were not delivered by 11:59 p.m. September 25th, which marks the end of the tracking period. To my understanding, the number ten album shifted around more 800 units than Buckingham Nicks, so insufficient supply chains and bottlenecks in the distribution could have prevented Buckingham Nicks from reaching the top ten if these rumors are true. I'm curious if it's common for pre-orders to arrive over a week late.

WalkAThinLine. 10-02-2025 06:29 AM

Billboard's chart beat column reported that 30,000 albums were reported by Luminate, which Billboard uses to tabulate its charts. Of the 30,000 copies, 18,000 were vinyl. The article mentions that Buckingham Nicks is the best showing for any Nicks or Buckingham release since 2014, when 24 Karat Gold debuted at number 7 on the charts with 33,000 copies reported.
