Street Angel tour Pittsburgh (1994)
Clips of this show have shown up over the years but the entire show is now posted to youtube. The camera/video is professional but the quality is not there. My theory is someone recorded the video screens with a steady hand. But who knows maybe the tape quality declined over the years. A (semi) professional recording of a Street Angel tour is very rare especially for an entire concert. A few notable things about this show. Rare live performance of Docklands. At about 1:07:30, during Edgeof17 Stevie removes the mic from the stand and continues singing holding the mic in her hands for most of the rest of the song. Rare to see her walk around stage singing with a microphone in her hand. It had rained and Stevie mentions the rain right after Docklands. However the distant storm provided some good mood for the show. During one of the choruses to Dreams (thunder only happens when its raining) lightening was seen in the distant sky. The show was recorded at an amphitheater right outside Pittsburgh. She makes a good haul at the end. I liked her band for this tour. A completely sober Stevie and it shows. IMHO this is the last tour of her good voice. The Street Angel era seems to get trashed around here but this is evidence there were some good moments.

I was at this show and yes! It stormed alot! I had seats the closest I have ever been. But there was a good crowd if I remember. I was right in front of the girls. Things that stuck out for me were. Stevie was pretty heavy but she danced and kicked leg more than I had seen in the past. Her voice was great. She had Liza Edward's and Sara Fleetwood as back up singers with Sharon. I don't think Lori was on this tour. Also, Rick Vito was her guitarist with Carlos. I felt that Rick wasn't in a great mood for some reason, but that just might be me. Yes, she Docklands, not one of my favorite songs of hers. And it was awesome when she took the mic off the stands and kneeled down to sing. This was a great concert in one of her lowest popular moments in music.

This tour was really amazing. I caught it in Maryland and actually met her after the show. It was a great set list. 1994 wasn’t her best year for “popularity” but I was and always supported her music.

Oh man...this video and much of anything from 97/98 are reminders of why she was so captivating and what made me a fan. She sounded amazing. Street Angel gets a bad wrap, but vocally and performance wise she was on the top of her game. There was still some spontaneity! it's such a contrast to how everything is planned and staged to the last detail on her current shows.
I think it was the 2014 Pittsburgh Mac show when her mic came off the stand and she had to finish a song holding it, even she called it out at the end of the song and said it was "something new!" |
Yes, she sounds very good. In Wikipedia it says "Although praised for her post-klonopin vocals, she was criticised for her weight gain and once the tour was over, vowed never to walk on stage again until she had reached a more reasonable weight." Despite that last sentence, it seems like it was a very good show.
I understand there wasn't any tour between this and The Dance, was there? |
She did a handful of one-off shows in '96. St. Pete FL, Boston Commons, a benefit for the Arizona Heart Institute with her dad. There might be a few others I'm forgetting.
I've always wondered to what what extent the press was critical of her weight. Was it a ton of the press or did she happen to pickup on one or two mentions of it? It doesn't matter either way, that would be a horrific thing to go through and I wouldn't blame anyone for being upset by it. |

Notice she was still wailing during Edge of 17. She was so not happy and told Mary Turner during a late 1994 interview for people NOT to buy her album. She was really in a bad head space. She also did a radio interview when asked about no video for her lead single talked about wasting money on videos where she might need money in her older years. Puts everything in perspective. She was not touring by personal plane but by bus. She was terrified she was washed up and would not have the cash flow she was used to. |

I recall almost all of her reviews of the Street Angel tour would comment on her weight. |
It’s funny to watch that interview that she did from her home in Studio City sometime between 92-94. Studio City is quite the downgrade from her previous Hollywood Hills home(s). They all benefited from The Dance, but it really saved her a$$.

EXTREMELY VALID QUESTION...
Where would she be now, if The Dance hadn't happened? Retired, 30 years ago? Playing county fairs now? Dead? |
I found the interview where Stevie says she does not want to spend money on videos because she may need to get an apartment in central Phoenix when she is older and does not just want to have a TV and videos to show for her career  It starts at 7:00
She also talks that Dreams went to #1 instead of Go Your Own Way because Lindsey's song was bitter and hers was positive and encouraging. In part one she states she left Fleetwood Mac because she did not want to feel guilty about making them wait for her solo career. She stated Chris left to go home and work on her marriage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDWCZXNYRUg |

The question where would Mick be now. |

Yes, The Dance changed everything for her. |

Just in case my point doesn't mean whether that's what I wish had happened or not. This is pure speculation, and I'm just playing the What If game. I don't have a crystall ball, nobody does. We'll never know what would have happened. Anyway, I've never been to a Stevie Nicks concert, and I don't think I would go, either now or in a non-The Dance parallel universe. Unless someone invited me. If it's free, maybe I would go. |

Mick? What a schmuck. |

All of this is hypothetical. What would have happened if a reunion never happened? In the 2000s concerts exploded with older acts hitting the road making big bucks. Its quite possible she could have made some good coin. But the Mac made her famous and when she needed them the most rebooted her career. With her wild success in 1997 and 1998 let her come forward with lots of details about her personal life that I doubt she would have revealed if she was not another success i.e. klonopin addiction, breast implant removal, etc. |
Since we are discussing the Street Angel era, this interview is a must listen. Right as Street Angel is being released, Stevie sits down with 2 morning DJs in LA for an hour long interview. This interview is fascinating for several reasons. Stevie is a great mood and you can sense her excitement to get out of rehab and go on the road again to promote a new album. She is really perky. The DJ guys are morons and while they try to be funny, they are not funny and the typical morning radio guys from the 80s and 90s. In the beginning one of them calls Stevie.....Lindsey. However in their idiocy they do land some very direct questions that few interviewers would dare ask. She is asked directly if she is friends with Lindsey. She then confronts them and asks them what Lindsey said about her. Lots of Prince talk and they make jokes about Prince masturbating to Stevie on the radio  Stevie sings live to many of the songs they play. In the end she is playing a keyboard live on air and sings HAWAFY.
Stevie states that Prince is mad at her and refuses to talk to her but she does not know why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntul_GT28TU |
I've never been in the camp of "her career would have been over had it not been for The Dance reunion" - she probably would of eventually regained her health and eventually landed with a stronger management and PR team that would help redefine her as one of the "leading songwriters of Fleetwood Mac" If Fleetwood Mac's last performance had been the '93 Inauguration - I'm not convinced she would be playing stadiums (paired with other acts) like she is today. It would have been a slower climb, requiring a steadier output of successful albums and touring.
There's an entire younger generation that grew up attending Fleetwood Mac shows between '97-'15 that showed up for Stevie. Had that cultivation of her fanbase not happened, I'm betting things would be different. With the rise and popularity of yacht rock/classic rock in general, sure there probably would have been a period in which she headlined some smaller arenas on her own, but it would eventually settle back down to her playing the theatre circuit. In a lot of ways, I wish she would have wound up playing theatres. I think she became increasingly disconnected from her fans and her craft as a result of the massive arena/stadium touring. It has earned her the icon status, but it sacrificed the artist. But that's an entirely different conversation. |
