Stevie Nicks Says Watching 'Daisy Jones & the Six' Is Like 'Watching My Own Story'

Amazon Prime’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel Daisy Jones & the Six traces the rise and fall of a fictional Seventies rock band through a doc-style miniseries. The 10-episode miniseries brings to life the magic behind the two halves of the title, along with highs, bitter arguments, and behind-the-scenes tension, while centering around lead singers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne (played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin). It’s a story real-life legend Stevie Nicks said brings back memories of her own, which isn’t surprising as the series borrows heavily from Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac.

After watching the 10-episode miniseries for the second time, Nicks took to Instagram to share her thoughts. “In the beginning, it wasn’t really my story, but Riley seamlessly, soon became my story,” she wrote. “It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story. It was very emotional for me.”

“I just wish Christine could have seen it,” Nicks continued. “She would have loved it.”

Christine McVie, co-lead vocalist and beloved keyboardist for Fleetwood Mac, died on Nov. 30, at the age of 79. She was often referred to as the emotional glue in a band that spent the past 50 years breaking up and coming back together. Following her death, Nicks penned a letter to her bandmate, singing partner, and “best friend.”

“Until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London — but we were told to wait. So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over,” she said. “I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her and so, I’m singing it to her now. I always knew I would need these words one day.”

Nicks then wrote out the lyrics to the third verse of Haim’s “Hallelujah”: “I had a best friend but she has come to pass/One I wish I could see now/You always remind me that memories will last/These arms reach out/You were there to protect me like a shield/Long hair, running with me through the field/Everywhere, you’ve been with me all along.”

I have not watched the show.

Is it good? Does it resemble the Fleetwood Mac saga? Are there three vocalists in the band?

BigAl84 08-16-2023 08:52 AM

Oh please, like Christine would have any interest in some overly sensationalized portrayal of a 70's rock band. She lived it and you could tell in later years she didn't have a whole lot of interest in reliving the past.

It's watchable but trashy. Like a wikipedia version of their story.

Agreed! I fear we're going to get lots of these 'Christine would have' proclamations going forward

I suppose it's just coincidental that Stevie had this insight today, when she just got a round of negative press about her message re: Lahaina.

BigAl84 08-16-2023 02:15 PM

I'm shocked it's taken her this long to comment about it. I figured she would have already invited the entire cast backstage and declared she'd already written half an albums worth of material inspired by it......:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Yet again Stevie has to try and attach herself to something recently popular and coming on the heels of the backlash from her dumb Hawaii comments. She is beyond predictable and ridiculous. I have no doubt an 80 year old Christine would have rolled her eyes at this show. But of course her best friend forever who didn’t talk to her outside of tours would know what she would have loved.

I’d love to get Dan Perfect’s honest assessment of the Stevie relationship based on the things he was told over the years.

How hard would it have been to include a link to donate to United Way, Maui Food Bank, Red Cross, or the GoFundMe for Mick's employees in this post too.

Just thinking. She should have a QR code on her screen for Maui help funds. She has one I think for UNICEF. Why not add another one for Maui? People are trying to find loved ones and pets in Maui. They're also dealing with predatory real estate people trying to take their land. They are suffering loss, anxiety, and uncertainty. It tears my heart out. Soldier's Angel could support the people of Maui.

regarding Riley, it was just announced this week that she was named sole trustee of Elvis estate, and sole owner of Graceland.

It would have been nice maybe, but why is Stevie being expected to do this, and not John or Lindsey? Because someone on her team set up social media? It’s really not that hard to create a FB account and create a page for donations. John could do it while sailing on his yacht! But from what I understand, he hasn’t set anything up. Has he even commented on it? And what about Lindsey? He’s got people who could set it up for him, if he’s too lazy to do it himself, like Stevie, apparently. Where are his comments or acknowledgement of the tragedy?

After hearing people criticizing Stevie’s posts, I can certainly understand why they would be hesitant to say anything about the tragedy. It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t conundrum.

Oh, and in order to save Homer the trouble, yes I’m a Stevie fan so of course I let her get away with anything, she could kill my family and I’d be ok with it, etc, etc.

I've already posted that Lindsey should post something yet you want to argue with me. Do you want to apologize to me now?

Rereading my post, it did seem like I was singling you out, UnwindedDreams, so I definitely offer an apology for that. I wasn’t trying to argue with you, I meant my post to be more of a general ‘why just Stevie and not John or Lindsey.’ I didn’t know you had mentioned Lindsey in a different post. And I think my statements were valid- it does seem like famous people are damned if they do damned if they don’t when it comes to sharing their thoughts about world events on social media.

All good. Famous people also share where people can contribute just as Stevie does now during Soldier's Angel (and did for USO on the IYD Tour, and the ONE Campaign in 2005). I appreciate her post but the challenge is it's just a journal entry that gets posted. People write "Love You Stevie." "You're the Best" and then it's on to Daisy Jones and the Six and nothing else gets said about Maui. There are likely more than 1,000 persons missing. The town was ravaged by flames. Plead with people to help. That Lahaina post or the Daisy Jones post that came after could have contained links to support the people who call Maui home. To people who say "how lazy are you that you can't Google where you can donate" I say there are people who don't know where to contribute or how to know if a webpage is a scam so why not look to an influencer for a legitimate cause. Also what's the reasoning to not include a link in Stevie's post, does it somehow decrease her post or take the "magic" out of it? No! It makes it effective and makes a difference! All that's left is a journal entry where she says how important Lahaina is to the history of Fleetwood Mac but no portal to how people can help each other.

I think Mike Campbell, Lindsey, Rick Vito, and Billy Burnette should all make helpful posts.

There was a time (I guess about fifty years ago) that Stevie had better taste in entertainment. She could talk about a Jean Cocteau movie onstage with genuine love, or she could mention Olivier and Oberon in a great romantic drama or reference a Powell movie like The Wild Heart in a song title or pay homage to Poe or Wilde or a silent film queen.

Then she got older and “matured” — and now laps up trash like Twilight, Glee, AHS, and Daisy Jones. She should be writing songs about Nazimova or Edith Sitwell or Mad Men. She’s such a doughgirl.

She probably told her brother far more than she told her nephew. I'd be curious also as to their take on things. But neither one of them would ever talk. ;)

Great point, Lis! I forgot about her brother. They definitely would never talk.

The difference between Stevie (and Lindsey or John) in this case is that she chose to put out a message about Maui. And then when she made it about her -- which has happened with many of her messages lately, people were not ok with it.

I don't think Lindsey or John are obliged to speak out on Maui if they don't feel the need to. Lindsey has a house on Kauai, as far as I know, but doesn't live on Maui or identify with it more than having vacationed there. I don't think John lives on Maui either, as Mick has referred to him living one island over. They're no more responsible to make a statement about Maui than any other celebrity who has vacationed there - i.e. not responsible at all. I would argue it would be presumptuous and self-serving for them to take up bandwith with their thoughts and prayers, if they didn't have anything to add as far as actually helping.

But Stevie chose to insert herself into this issue. She chose to center her experience in Maui and that of her family as part of her narrative. So if she chooses to speak out, she also has to expect that people will evaluate what she says and respond. That's the world we live in today.

And, to get back on this topic, today's news cycle moves fast. No doubt Stevie and her PR team knew that tweeting about Daisy Jones and the Six would keep the wheel turning away from the Maui statement. The author has said the story is inspired by Stevie (and many younger folks have cited The Dance, in particular, as inspiration for how they see Stevie and FM in general), so that Stevie would react isn't a surprise. But the choice to tweet about a series that has been out for months (adapted from a book that has been out for years) on the heels of the Maui statement response seems like obvious PR strategy.

We know Stevie doesn't like negative press. It is likely a primary reason the firing of Lindsey was so convoluted, and she was very upset about the fan backlash she saw about that and even remarked on it in the press.

I guess her people achieved their goal in moving the news cycle along. But I do think it's ghoulish for her to mention Christine as part of this game, but I don't know that it was malicious as much as self-involved.

Just wanted to mention that as far as I know, John sold his big house in Honolulu around 2018 and doesn't own any property there anymore. (I think he owned 2 smaller ones before that.) After the cancer thing, he had to spend so much time in LA for treatment etc, he probably figured it was better just to move back. Plus Molly and her husband are there.

When Lindsey was fired he gave that interview to Rolling Stone magazine he said John lived very close to him and pointed to over there in the interview saying something like it was quite close in proximity to his house.
