Red Rocks 2022
Almost the same set list, except she cut New Orleans (obviously) and added in Soldier’s Angel and Moonlight. I think she sounded slightly better than she did at Jazzfest.
Some of the clips that are online so far: GDW: https://youtu.be/yi7qrob8wDs Stand Back: https://youtu.be/4mEneIEGCSg OTR-Dreams: https://youtu.be/eJFKHkrK8wI Wild Heart-Bella Donna: https://youtu.be/EWcweqv2340 Rock n Roll: https://youtu.be/rZ1vBqxAhX4 Soldier’s Angel: https://youtu.be/E2Oer4TAxxM Edge: https://youtu.be/L8iHbQu4w7Y Free Fallin: https://youtu.be/53nxN-plp-k |
She sounds great. Thank you!
Soldier's Angel was added for the people of Ukraine? So it's a 16 song setlist (with Wild Heart and Bella Donna as one song)? Good for her. No drum solos or piano interludes anymore. |

1. Outside The Rain-Dreams 2. If Anyone Falls 3. SDMHA 4. Enchanted 5. Wild Heart-Bella Donna 6. Gypsy 7. Landslide 8. Soldier’s Angel 9. Stand Back 10. GDW 11. Moonlight 12. Edge 13. Free Fallin 14. Rhiannon 15. Rock n Roll So we hear 17 songs in all, two are just tacked onto the ends of others. |
I like that the speech was short and to the point before Soldier's Angel. She did say she was reading what she had wrote earlier. This might have been a good approach for the RRHoF speech.
Also pleased the Moonlight was brought back. Anxious to see videos of that posted to Youtube. And final thoughts: 1)It seems much more natural to see Stevie at night! I finally realized what was jarring about the Jazzfest videos...daylight! 2) Personally I wish she would drop Free Fallin'. I like Rock N Roll and the crowd seems to like it. I'd like to see her close with that and then HAEWAFY or even Love Is again. Minor squabbles, I know! |

Did Stevie change the set last night at Gorge Amphitheatre?
|
Not sure about the hair ….but..
She sounded great and very relaxed. Loved Bella Donna.. |
My honest thoughts: She looks like she is having fun and her vocals, outfit and appearance are really good! I am just jarred by how gingerly she is walking around the stage. Like the Standback twirls are almost embarrassing. I wish she would just wear ballerina flats or something if she is truly afraid of falling. It just honestly does make me sad. I feel like she should just take the twirling out of the set because it’s clunky and frankly “old lady like”. I love her though. I just feel like even Christine was more agil from the video clips from the last FM tour. Her voice though… no!

But if that’s what she likes, so be it …she’s 74 in a couple of days….. |
When Stevie did Soldier's Angel on the In Your Dreams Tour 2011-2012, did she not sing the fourth verse like she's doing (not singing it) this year?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8L7lQR004Q Maybe she thought that verse wouldn't connect with the genocide happening in Ukraine. Also, does anyone hear a keyboard in the background? It sounds like an X-Files or All the Beautiful Worlds sound. Otherwise, I think the song sounds great. |
If you recall, somewhere around 2011-2013 she hurt her knee and you noticed her twirling in 2013 Mac era was a bit slowed down because of the pain, she was going a bit slower in stand back.
Additionally, she said in an interview during the pandemic that she hurt that same knee again and you can see from the Red Rocks clips that she's wearing a knee brace. That would explain the "clunky" look...she's probably not trying to overdo it and make a situation worse. It probably wouldn't hurt her to tone it down or not do it at all in some parts, but I think after singing for so many years you get into habits like that and they are hard to get away from. Quote:

She looks alright and her vocals are serviceable. But her voice continues to lose more and more of what I found enjoyable about her live performances over the years. It's been a downward trend over the last 25 years (really more, but whenever she got that vocal coach.....blah). The little nuances she used to add to her live vocals are gone. She sounds flat and very blah. I wouldn't go see her and I continue to find her to be a nauseating person, but I'm glad the old gal still is willing and able to get on stage and entertain the fans who do want to see her again or see her for the first time. We are losing the boomer-era rockers more and more every year and the time to see them is limited. |
!
I could not bear to watch some of the new performances all the way through on youtube. What I did see reminded me of someone's grandma or great grandma dressing up as Stevie Nicks and trying to put on a show. FFS lady retire !

My mother is 73 and if she announced a world tour I'd be very afraid! Glad it's a small tour. She's gonna fall and hurt herself. No joke. |
Poor old thing is unstable in several departments now. Karen probably charges her scooter for her each night at home.
god bless Karen. |

These performances don't really make me want to travel to see her. They do make me wish she would record some interesting material with an interesting group of musicians and play smaller venues.
The shed she's playing in Indiana is nearly sold out. Most likely it's because everybody is itching to get out of the house after the past three years and everyone knows she's not getting any younger. The whole "might be the last time" vibe with all of these tours (McCartney, The Who, Stevie) I find to be really depressing. |

Mike Campbell and Neil Finn are out there playing fresh material and the most recent song Stevie's playing was written in 2009. |

Are Enchanted and Outside the Rain Stevie's favorite songs?
Just interesting that she regularly plays those two over popular songs like I Can't Wait and Rooms On Fire |

The only rationale I can think of is that Dreams seems to have both in her sets and FM sets this standard slot of second song in the set. Given how she likes to roll Outside the Rain into Dreams, that puts OTR first. I agree there are other songs that would be nice to hear. Angel continues to be one of them for me, but the caveat is that I don't like her solo versions; the FM live version is far, far better. |

I just said the same thing to someone making fun of Pat Benatar. Why are folks going out of their way to watch performances and then talking ***** about them? Don’t watch them if you don't like them, and spare yourself the agony. I picture folks standing up and clutching their pearls while watching YouTube and exclaiming “I can’t bear to watch anymore” and yet still standing there watching LOL. |

As for Enchanted, so much more from The Wild Heart to choose from: Sable, Gate and Garden, Nothing Ever Changes, Nightbird. Maybe the crowd likes the whoa, whoa, whoas, and yeah, yeah, yeahs It's really shocking she's not doing Crying In the Night or anything from her most recent studio album. |

Oh wait, yes you are allowed...:woohoo: |

Also, there is a mentality of "don't start too hot." Let it build. They don't want to begin with a song that's too popular. They want to ascend. |

I think The Chain builds and it's a hot opener. |

Outside the Rain became and opener during the RAL tour. She was still opening with Gold Dust woman but shortened her set dropping GDW and Sara. She stuck with OTR forever as the opener and her sets became so stale. I have always thought a full rock version of I Cant Wait would be a great opener. Not sure she could pull it off today though. BTW, I loved the Benmont Tench/Waddy versions of GDW on the BD/Wild Heart tours. It was mystical, rocking, and a great opener. The way she does it today would not be a great opener. I may be in the minority but dont care for Fall From Grace. Its just her singing fast. There is not much music. She thinks its a rocker but does not even have a guitar solo. But dont get me started about Sheryl Crow and TISRL because most of that album is so freaking boring. |
I don't think Stevie has to retire; I just wish she'd evolve. Her insistence on the same set, same movements, same attire, etc. reduces her to a caricature.
I mean, Tony Bennett was recording and performing into his 90s. His pairing with Gaga introduced him to a new generation in an age-appropriate way. Same thing with Loretta Lynn. She recorded Van Lear Rose with Jack White in her 70s and resurrected her career. |
Quote:
I also wish that she realized that what lives on are the recordings. Live performances evaporate and only live in the memories of those who were there. Looking good onstage and dancing around is nice, and enjoyable to experience, but the only things that live after you are gone (or after you can no longer sing/perform) are the recordings. That's how future generations who weren't alive at the time can know about you and why people were such fans of yours.... and she was either so messed up on drugs for so many of the concerts that got recorded, and/or her voice so shot that there are some really awful performances documented. Then you add to that that she basically stopped recording any new music of her own after 2003.... there's no as you say evolution, no growth, no continuing arc to her career where we get to see how her storytelling continued to evolve over time from her 20s to her 70s. It's more like as a songwriter she fell off a cliff and disappeared in 2003 because she's had nothing new to say. I don't know that future generations (after she's long gone) will listen to her stuff and still think she's a "legend" |
Anyone know if Stevie did anything different in Portland last night?
|
This Stand Back from Portland has traces of the Boston 1996 festival concert. Stevie is back and pumped up!
