Sisters Of The Moon and Lindsey's guitar

I've just been revisiting the Deluxe Tusk set, and I found myself marvelling at the guitar in the Sisters Of The Moon remix. I know Lindsey would always downplay his abilities as a screaming-guitar-soloist, but I think he protests too much. Songs like Tango In The Night, or the Live album versions of I'm So Afraid and Don't Let Me Down Again, all have magnificent epic solos. I'm So Afraid, in particular, rivals Comfortably Numb for me.

I've never had much time for guitarists who can noodle up and down the fretboard, as if they're just filling up their allotted number of bars by attempting to dazzle with their virtuosity. I much prefer a solo that comments on the song, or takes it onto another level. I'm thinking of that euphoric solo in You Make Loving Fun, or the glorious one that ends Book Of Love! So beautiful. Those two solos in Mystified - they just carry me off into rapture.

Book Of Love(and Can't Go Back) are pure pop heaven. Mirage is so underrated!

tango87 02-15-2021 11:52 AM

Oh definitely! And those backing vocals in Book Of Love - heaven.

Macfan4life 02-15-2021 12:16 PM

I love LOVING CUP from Go Insane. His guitar melody and guitar solo is insane (pardon the pun).

I love it when Lindsey rocks or is mystical with Christine like on Oh Daddy and Straight Back

In my dream setlist world, I always wanted Lindsey to do Book of Love in a live setting. Even if he reworked it to a solo tune a la Big Love/Go Insane/NGBA, I think it would have been a great choice and a welcome way to change up that Big Love/NGBA duo he seemed to have stuck to in Fleetwood Mac shows.

Can't Go Back is another one that should have been tried some time. I could have seen that in the mini set where Mick plays the "cocktail kit."

yes - that screaming guitar solo on SOTM remix made me a fan of SOTM all together. and that's why i so disliked neutered version of SOTM on recent tours. guessing SN wouldn't let him steal her thunder considering all his solos on her songs were basically cancelled on recent tours, while once Christine came back he really added back some dazzling guitar solos, on songs like You Make Loving Fun. but SOTM remix guitar solo takes that song on a completely new level and it's among my favorites of his.

Everything about SOTM 78-82 was stunning.

Here is a list of Lindsey's best guitar jams at the end of songs

Sisters of the moon
Tango in the Night
The Chain
Over and Over (live)
Go Your Own Way
The Smile I live For (Chris solo)
Eyes of the World
Only Over You
I'm So Afraid (his standing ovation song)

What did I miss?

YES
How could I have forgotten that one  Its one of life's travesties that this song was performed on 3 world tours yet NEVER with Lindsey. We should sue for damages.

Chris's keyboard playing at the end of Oh Daddy is just as good.

Can I also add the fabulous demented chicken solo from I Want You (plus the playout)?

several relatively recent Lindsey solo songs have outros that are in similar vein how he does Eyes of the World solo live these days -

Right Place to Fade / Twist of Fate
Seeds We Sow (electric)

from FM i think Sad Angel also

i adore those fast melodic outros he does :]:]

FuzzyPlum 02-17-2021 09:37 AM

Lindsey certainly could have pushed his soloing out into a more prominent place had he wanted, but he was often quite restrained. Though those songs mentioned have very obvious guitar sections, there are plenty of others that have guitar playing that complements the song without standing out.

When I think of Warm Ways, I don't instantly think 'guitar' and yet it's the gentle touch of Lindsey's playing that adds personality to that song (In fact, when I think of Warm Ways and Mystified I think of Peter Green). There are others such as Blue Letter, Think About Me, Hold Me, Empire State etc that have guitar solos under the surface that add to the song but don't necessarily stand out on their own.

Obviously The Killers' Caution is another example of where he lets loose in an outro solo.

I had to go listen to “Mary Lee Jones” on YouTube because I remember loving that fuzz-box outro, like Bob Mitchum and Jane Greer’s violent crackup in the automobile at the very end of Out of the Past.

and that's such a vanilla, typical Lindsey solo. considering how world over has been in owe about that solo just shows you how spoiled Fleetwood Mac fans are, taking these solos for granted (and even complaining against his solos!) and not appreciating what he's giving us.

Well, compared to solos on anything by The Killers, sure.

But Fleetwood Mac has had other guitarists.

Lindsey has had a few great solos, and even his basic, simple solos are appropriate for the songs, which is commendable. And, nobody comes close on acoustic. I actually appreciate that he keeps it simple on lead. It keeps things from sounding forced.

However, as a lead player, he’s never had anything as magnificent as “Something Inside of Me,” “Save Me,” “Need Your Love So Bad,” or “Curly” (technically the Bluesbreakers). Compare the 1972 live “Spare Me A Little” to the 1975...

Matter of opinion. Depends what you're into.

I personally find the Save Me solo to be somewhat bland and generic-sounding.
Each to their own.

I agree. It was nothing special. What did make it special was a guitar solo in the middle of the song since unfortunately the Mac did not have a ton of songs like that. As Lindsey says, he is a painter...he looks at the whole song and not a chance to show off his guitar solos which is a shame because Lindsey can rock when he wants to.

jbrownsjr 02-25-2021 08:22 AM

I don't think there's a Lindsey solo that I don't like. Especially live.
His later years are a bit lazy. He doesn't do the nuance anymore live because of backing tracks. It drives me insane. (pun inteneded)
However, he has wonderful sensibilities and especially early on, I have adored his work. Carnival Begin makes me happy in a deep way. :)
