Do you like Stevie’s new single, Show Them the Way?

Yup. I think it's a strong song. It doesn't sound like a "hit" single, but it's a nicely sung and produced song.

I have to think about it. But like Iris DeMent’s How Long, I admit to being moved and raised goose flesh.
So I think the applicability of the “Dream” to the Hamptons is rather ludicrous (“Dont forget what we were fighting for!”). The context of that directive in the Hampton’s is as out of place as the applicability of it to today. But is there another example of Stevie PRaYING in song? Wow. I am moved I can’t help it. ETA: is that mick? |
I think it's her worst song to date. I couldn't even finish it.

I usually always love her demos more than the released version so I listened to the acoustic version first. After 4:52 seconds I was bored and wanted it to end. The next two minutes I listened to the rest but it felt too long. Then I watched the official video and almost from the get go some tears started to flow. I know it sounds corny and some of you will eye roll but it made me cry because it's a great song. And the picture flashbacks invoke photo memories seen long ago. I enjoyed her vocal and the music very much. It's not a song that will have me dancing around the house because it's too serious a subject for that. It's not a song I want to listen to a lot because it is so serious. But I will listen to it and I do like it.
I hear musical elements of Trouble in Shangri La mixed in with the vocal elements of Bombay Sapphires within this song. |
My view is this. I really like the production a lot. It saves the song. If you can really call it a song. It's a just poem she clumsily turned into a song with the help of another writer/producer. Why she got it in her head that the rambling poem is great is beyond me. Anyone could of written it. Why does she still think that everything she writes is great? She loves herself too much.
The song is in the vein of Illume, Mabel Norman, You Can't Fix This and a few others. I loved the production on those songs but the bad lyrics really bother me soo much that I rarely listen to them. The lyrics don't bother me as much on this song because she states at the beginning of the song that this is just a dream, so I guess it doesn't have to make as much sense. I also like the little chorus and how the song ends. Still the song is wayyyyyy tooo long and it's clumsily written, like almost all of her later stuff. (this song was co-written but we saw the original poem so he didn't do much) It's also boring. But ok, I'm going to give this song a thumbs up because I think it makes more sense than most, the production is great and surprisingly, her voice doesn’t sound that bad. I'll also give her the benefit of the doubt because of her age. Now for the video. It sucks. I feel like she is trying to pander to a group of people and at the end when she tells us to VOTE, I just rolled my eyes. It's a blatant attempt at trying to be relevant and it looks pretty cheap. P.S. Maybe I'm being too hard on her. Anyone who writes a political song and comes out with a political video is trying to be relevant I guess. It is self serving though. |
Also, this doesn't speak very well for a new album. I mean she is just handing over poems to producers and working with them to turn her poems into songs. They can't work miracles. Production won't save all her ramblings. I thought 24Karat Gold and In Your Dreams were comebacks for her because actually really worked on the songs.

When I listened to the preview yesterday, I wasn't impressed with her voice or the song. I listened to both this morning and just watched the video. This song works with the video. It reminds me of Mabel Norman, but Mabel had better music. I think when the songs kicks in 1/3 way through it works better. The lyrics in the beginning are pretty clumsy. "I fell into the dress" I really don't like that lyric. But as a whole, I'm pretty proud of her. She is stating a very powerful message and it works. I'm still mad at her for Lindsey though.
|
The song works better paired with the video. I admit I was moved, and I actually appreciate her making more of a political statement. She's a powerful voice...use it.

Having now seen the video and paid attention to the lyrics, I must say that I appreciate Stevie's intention (I am very interested in USA politics) and hope the same as she, that you all go to vote and in a certain way :o As a song, to me it would fall into, to say politely, my least favorite of Stevie. Marbel Normand, Illume, and this one... wtf with singing these lazy 3 note melodies that never end? Lindsey, do something! Well, as I read someone say, I won't consider this a "song" but rather a sort of poem or statement or alike... |
I also think that the production and the way she sounds are good. Sometimes, with TISL atmosphere, which to me is very positive (I loved TISL).
So I think it's a pity that, with this production, this message intention, as a song it was this weak. |

Do we know who wrote the music? Is this a Dave collaboration? It sounds way too much like Mabel Normand in terms of melody and her voice. She needs an editor. Cringey. |
Hate the music and production. It sounds like every top 40 pop song that's been released over the last 5 years and that doesn't suit Stevie at all, in my opinion.
The lyrics are okay. Some have called it a rambling mess but I like that Mabel Normand-esque style from her. I can't say I LIKE this song. It's just very middle of the road but I'm glad to see her actually creating something. Here's to hoping this really does lead to a new album. |
Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy current Stevie’s voice. I think In Your Dreams album has good songs but I can’t listen the whole album cause I get saturated of her Donald Duck voice sound. I think her last really great voice performance was The Dance. And probably Trouble in Shangri-La.
However, I do admit I did enjoy her performances during the last Fleetwood Mac shows I went to see them (obviously with Lindsey). But 2014 was the “This is it” to me, their (3) voices were not as good as in the past so I decided no to see them again (plus, then Lindsey was fired in 2018 so say no more). The song is not bad at the beginning, but the second half I don’t liked that much. Anyway it’s her voice what annoys me. Sad. If I can turn back time… |
I like the video..
the lyrics are good.. I appreciate that she released the song. She is a Baby Boomer who lived through crazy times.. like the assassination of Kennedy and MLK. The riots in the 60's....... The changes that they fought for back then... .....that feel like they could be taken away now....... I am glad that she is speaking out about these crazy times. |

It's clear she's passionate about the words, but this shouldn't be a song. Perhaps better left as a poem. |
I like the song and video it’s vey moving. Her voice is what it is. When I listened to her songs recorded prior to the 1990s I see why I loved every thing she sang on. I’m still a fan of her music and I have come to terms with her “new sound”.
|
I just listened again and caught these lyrics:
"It was all symbolic, Nothing was as it seemed" CLUNK! Clearly we don't need her to tell us that! Why oh why oh why won't she allow the nonsense to be trimmed away to leave the bare bones of a song that might not end up being cringey?? I don't hate it, but like so much of her work, needs some serious editing. |
Show them the Way is currently #7 on iTunes, all songs. So people are buying it. The funny thing is Dreams (greatest hits) is still #1 and Dreams (Rumours) is #5. She is having a big week.
|
I don’t think it’s a good song, but the video is very timely, given what is going on. Plus, I’m the type of person who cries at the sight of RFK’s funeral train, so it doesn’t take much along these lines to get to me.
|
I guess I am in the minority because I really don't care for "message" songs. I look for my entertainment to be a sanctuary from things like politics. With that said, I didn't think it was bad for a rambling stream of consciousness sort of thing, (though I enjoyed Mabel Normand much more); and the music wasn't bad, but the whole thing was way too long. I doubt I'll buy it or have the urge to listen to it much, but I do hope the burst of creativity leads to a new album.

Show Them The Way has moved up to #4 on iTunes chart. Dreams is still #1 & #5.

#4?! That's impressive. Even if it peaks and drops now, I think she did pretty good. Reviews have been pretty good too.

I found myself singing the chorus all day yesterday. So this morning I've listened to it several times. I actually like it. Except for the first verse and part of the second verse. Take out the dress and persian carpet part and in the second verse I'd take out the part about them handing her a drink. Unnecessary. The rest I really like. I also like the rock version better than the accoustic version.

I deliberately listened to the song without watching the video first; I didn't want my opinion to be influenced by the images. I'm very glad I did, because it seems almost everyone who really liked it was moved by the images on the video more than the song.
The song is not awful by any means, but it rambles on and on, and goes on way too long - it's like a demo, which is hardly surprising considering it is produced by Dave Stewart, the man whose goal is not to give Stevie constructive criticism to make her songs better. His goal is to keep the smile on her face. And to be fair, that's why she hired him. The narrative about doing benefits in the Hamptons and all that jazz really is a bad way to start the song as it's very hard to relate to. The lyrics do get better in the sense that I do feel like there's a good message buried there regarding peace and love... but it's communicated poorly, IMHO. I started to get bored about three minutes in. However, I did like how it started to change up around 4:50 and my interest was renewed. (Note: I purchased the song on Amazon and there's also a piano version without this change up or anything to maintain interesting sonicly; it is pretty dreary.) I appreciate Stevie trying to say something important, and for those who feel she is taking sides, I actually think she actually was a lot less partisan than she could have been. MLK and JFK are pretty safe figures. Yeah, BLM was all over the video, but everybody and their dog hopped on that bandwagon last summer. Celebrities were practically required by law to post that ubiquitous card on social media. I would have been surprised if Stevie hadn't included them in a video talking about race; if she hadn't, I'm sure there would have been criticism from angry Twitterites. Featuring an "I Can't Breath" sign in one pic though... It's BREATHE! BREATHE with an "E"!!! At any rate, we all should vote, no matter what side we're on. In other words, I didn't feel it was OTT. But this is definitely a song I will not be listening to regularly. I will listen to it a few more times before relegating it down to the always-skip pit of "The Nightmare" and "Cheaper Than Free," though. It might grow on me. PS For those comparing it to "Mabel Normand" - IMO, "Mabel Normand" is FAR superior! |

If she sang this song live, it would give everyone ample time to hit the bathroom and the bar.
|
It really bothers me that no Republicans are in this video. If she really wanted peace she would include everyone including Trump. Also, why aren’t Monica Lewinsky and Mary Joe Kopechnebin this video?

It is #8 as of this writing, so still doing well. Even if it disappears from the charts forever tomorrow, it's still a nice success that it made the charts at all whether her detractors want to acknowledge it or not.
