I wonder if Rumours would have enjoyed the same success that it did if, in 1977, every moron was able to memorialize their irrelevant stupid opinion as if it mattered. Sad days. :(

Everyone keeps noting the link between Carnival Begin and I'm So Afraid. But when I hear the former I think a lot more of Smile I Live For. All three songs share a common thread. What people don't note is that I'm So Afraid was heavily influenced by Fleetwood and the McVies. They took a folk dirge with excellent guitars and turned it into an Afro-percussive Blues.

Carnival Begin is probably my second favorite on the album. I love it. Fantastic writing and mystical. I love when Christine drifts from pure love songs to mystical love songs ;)
I recognize it for its creativity. |

We all have different likes but I am confused by the title of this thread..."I don't GET"
It does not say, I don't like. It implies you don't understand the context of the song which is a shame. Christine writes brilliantly with metaphors and subtle texts. Its a very well crafted song. Does she have to explain how someone's love is like a circus wheel? But she does elaborate and explain.....changing all the time. If you think about her adjectives, metaphors, and symbolism you will completely understand the song. |

Listen to it from the persepective that it is about Christine's return to the band. Also, one can hear where Lindsey is filling in for Stevie with the extended backup/background sustained note as she is want to do. It's dark and mystical like 'I'm So Afraid', 'The Chain', 'Gold Dust Woman', 'Oh, Daddy' (Alternate with Stevie backing), 'Tango In The Night', 'Behind The Mask', 'In The Back Of My Mind', 'Sooner Or Later', and 'Illume', to name a few other works sharing a common dark, magical thread in the Fleetwood Mac tapestry. 'Carnival Begin' is classic Mac with meaning, depth, and fine guitar work and solo.

Your words are better than mine. I love the mystical side of the Mac. When Christine ventures into the realm of mysticism its pure magic like Oh Daddy, Bad Journey, etc. Its textures, colors, feelings, and emotions for my ears. You are correct....its classic Fleetwood Mac even to the early years. |
Funny, I love that song the most on the BuckMcVie album.
Christine personally conquered a phobia of flying, and that was part of the reason she wanted to (and was able to) return to Fleetwood Mac and to traveling the world, after a long time of staying in the UK. The lyrics are partly about this new feeling of liberation. And it makes sense to me, the similar sound re: I'm So Afraid, because this song is about having conquered fear. |

I like the song.
The end structure and solo is from the I'm So Afraid playbook -- as is the title track from Tango In The Night. I don't understand Game of Pretend -- the arrangement is so substandard and way below what Buckingham is capable of. Same goes for the "la la la's" at the end of Red Sun. Say what you will about Stevie Nicks, but she knows a little about not overproducing tracks when there is no need to do so. This album might have held together a little better if it had a little more muscle and a little less saccharine pop. |
I love the album and Carnival Begin is one of my favorites. I like your point about more muscle tho. I wanted something that packs a punch like Think About Me.
