Buckingham McVie - 4-star review in Mojo magazine
This is the first review I've seen...
'Lindsey Buckingham & Christine McVie - **** Fleetwood Mac's new not-quite Fleetwood Mac album The party line is that Stevie Nicks's solo commitments have forced Fleetwood Mac to put their next album on hold. But as the recent Tango In The Night reissue proved, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie were often the band's great unsung partnership. Confusingly, this duets album also includes bass guitarist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood, making it essentially Fleetwood Mac minus Nicks. McVie brings the sing-song pop (Feel About You, Red Sun) and the slightly cloying Game Of Pretend; Buckingham, the whispered vocals and fingernail-splitting guitar solos on Sleeping Around The Corner and Love Is Here To Stay, plus the album's best song: In My World. Does it miss Stevie Nicks? Yes, just as the last Fleetwood Mac album, 2003's Say You Will, missed Christine McVie. But until all parties can sync their calendars, this will do nicely. Mark Blake' Might not please those non-'In My World' fans... |
Thanks for posting the review.

Let's hope he's wrong and maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. |

I agree with all of you, however I'm happy that the first review is both positive and straightforward.
|
Just what I was afraid of..oh well every band has it's day and Fleetwood Mac sure had theirs.
|
I like the way the critic called the album what it is- a FM album without Stevie, just like Say You Will was a FM album without Christine. Simple and to the point. And I do wish be had gone into more detail about how the 'duets' sound and whether Christine and Lindsey's harmonies are reminiscent of earlier FM albums.
But yeah, his comment that In My World is the best song on the album does lower my expectations :distress: |

But it was a fairly positive review  |
More whispered vocals. Bleh.
|
Although this review is positive, it makes me dread the album. If In My World is the best single, probably going to be a nice but forgettable album.

frankly, if someone thinks that IMW is a great song, then their musical tastes are very different than mine and i can't take their opinion as something that will give me any hints about other songs. and the song we already know, SATC is a much much better song than IMW, so... |

I love the first single and 4 stars is great. But, I'm hoping the album gets better.

I like IMW and I'm looking forward to hearing all the songs. To get a 4/5 review is great and the reviewer clearly likes the album - "this will do nicely for now". It's also very much personal opinion as to which song anyone thinks is the best of an album. It's very probable that fans will prefer other songs on there.
He just seemed very definite with "IMW is the best song" and that rang warning bells, given how much it's been slated by numerous ledgies. As I said earlier, I just hope we feel differently than he does about which is the best song. |

Another thing to consider is that Mojo is largely an indie rock magazine, and I can hear how IMW would appeal to certain indie sensibilities.

When I was a lass, I knew Siskel and Ebert as a duo so well, that depending on what each one said, I could tell whether I would like a movie or not. Now, when Siskel died, when I just got Ebert's review, I couldn't really judge by own reaction to the movie in advance based on his thoughts alone. So, you have to know how you relate to the reviewer(s). Michele |
Lets not jump to any conclusions until we each have the album in hand and listen to it several times. Its possible the lead single is the most "commercial" and that is a good sign. Who wants commercial pop songs? Well maybe some of us (here)
When I bought In the Meantime and Say You Will, I thought they were ok. It was not until listening several times and a month later that I realized how good the albums are. Some are judging a book by its cover or in this case... by one song. The only thing that worries me is the reviews. Usually whatever the professional reviewers say, I seem to think the opposite. Rolling Stone trashed Landslide and The Wild Heart but loved Tango and Behind The Mask. The only review from Rolling Stone I agreed with was "Nicks slips out of touch" for Rock A Little. Nothing could have nailed a better review calling her Talk To me a Cindi Lauper hit and the entire album seems "unfocused" Ya think? |
It's a good review. I'm not worried about the reviewer citing IMW as the best song. Some reviewers cited Big Love as the best song from Tango when that album came out--and even since. IMW is a very good song. I'm just annoyed I'm not hearing Cnristine on it. At all. Still, as a bench mark for the quality of the album, it's understandable.
I just can't wait to get my hands on the Christine material. If it's anything like ITM, then I'll be stoked. |
A good review means a lot to Lindsey and Christine, they worked hard for this project and I guess there's always a personal preference in terms of picking the best song out of an album. I'll take this review for what it is: good press.
|
Taste is subjective, so I'm happy it's getting good press, and I hope it's great, but I think I will probably base my opinion on Chris's songs just because her output has been so small in the last 20 years. Here's to hoping (but trying not to get my expectations up).

I remember her saying in the ITM press interview that she and Dan would have worked on more if they weren't happy with all of the 12 on ITM. I presume there were more song ideas beyond Come Out to Play. |

I love all of their past collaborations, so I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised too. |
I mean this reviewer calls "Family man" one of the best tracks on Tango..so there is hope.

Yeah this is the anti-review. It hurts rather than helps even though it's positive.

I hate the music in Family Man as much as the lyrics, etc. If the critic thought Family Man was the best song on Tango, I'm even more bummed now. On the other hand, music is subjective, so I'm still optimistic...

There must be something wrong with me.
I like all the songs others are hating. Family Man, In My World, others i can't remember right now Even Silver Girl and the rest of Say You Will:shrug: |
