Stevie's weirdest songs
Stevie has in her catalogue a large number of unusual songs.... shifting, complex melodies, bizarre inscrutable lyrics, mysterious references, odd vocal styling, strange production, and so on. Two of my top weird Stevie songs are
Thousand Days - the loud brassy production and the urgent vocals and complete nonsense lyrics When I See You Again - a wisp of a song made intriguing by the repetitive and odd vocals RAL and TISL seem to have more than their share. |
I think the music on WISYA is beautiful. The lyrics and melody are heinous but the music is really gorgeous imo. It sounds like a summer night.

Now Mabel Normand, on the other hand........ And poor Jane.... |
Not that I don't love them but I must add...
Cathouse Blues Ooh My Love Doing the Best I Can (Escape from Berlin) Desert Angel Greta Wide Sargasso Sea I think these all fit the original criteria in one way or another... |
Space Needle (adore it though)
Sweet Girl (out of left field chorus) Goldfish and the Ladybug (uh...) Blue Lamp Battle of the Dragon |
Sister Honey is kinda strange haha, but I love it!

Weird is such a subjective term... for me, confusing or bad lyrics don't necessarily make a song weird, but if it did, Docklands or Jane would make my list.
However, in terms of weird like bizarre, I would go with Sisters of the Moon, along with Blue Lamp and maybe the Nightmare. All three have unusual music with a hint of supernatural menace. |
Silver Girl
Sister Honey Docklands Jane Bombay Sapphires I Don't Care Cathouse Blues Welcome to the Room... Sara |
I don't have a list but when Sisters of the Moon was released as a single, I called our local am radio station and asked why they weren't playing it. He said that it sounded too weird. I asked the same question to the same guy when "Fireflies" was released. He said it sounded too much like Sara.

I heard SOTM on the radio only one time in 1980. I was at a bonfire in the woods. If it weren't for the memory of that song I would have never remembered that party. |
I think weird for Stevie is something like Sister Honey... wild, fun, random. Not bad necessarily, but strange in relation to her other work.
|
I think She Calls You Missing is a really freaky song! Kind of scary!

Sister Honey, Alice, Mabel Normand are unique

If it was not so funky especially in the beginning Siiiiiiisssssssta I don't think it would be a weird song. |
LOL Macfan! Stevie moonwalking in platform heels is funny to picture!

It really did cross my mind if Stevie would do something weird like that. I was already in shock so many songs on RAL had a funky vibe. Yes can you imagine her moon-walking to the beginning of Sister Honey. Now THAT would have been something  |
I don't think of it as "weird" but I do think of Sister Honey as one of her more unusual songs. Just because it's so uncharacteristic of her. I do think it has a nice tie in to Gold and Braid. Like she learned something about herself from the guy in Gold and Braid and when she meets the guy in Sister Honey she's trying to figure out what this relationship is going to be and she has to remind herself "don't let that golden hair get in the way". Christine Lavin has a song called Prisoners of their Hairdoos where she says that Stevie Nicks is a prisoner of her wardrobe, in that if she changed her look nobody would know who she was anymore. I think, in a way, the line about her hair in Sister Honey is reminiscent of that. Don't hide behind the image of Stevie Nicks when you're with this guy, be who you are under the superstar persona. Or she's saying the same to him, don't see me as this famous person, get to know the real me.
