Is Say You Will a fitting end to their legacy?
Pretty much I started this to discuss the following questions
Is Say You Will a fitting end to Fleetwood Mac's legacy? If not, is Buck Mac duet album a fitting end to their legacy? If Stevie decides not to be involved in making a new studio album, will it fracture or split the band completely? Is a tour possible or worthwhile behind the Buck Mac duet FM album with Stevie involved but not singing her own new songs? (She would still be doing tambourine and backing vocals on the live versions of Chris and Linds' songs) |
wouldn't the ep be if there is nothing more from them ?
and in my opinion I am don't care at this point it if they make something as a band or what's left of it I do know i will not pay more than $25 for a good seat if they are thinking of doing another greatest hit tour |
I am fond of the SYW album, but no it would not be a fitting end to their legacy. I think an album with Christine would be a fitting end to it.

Say You Will was too long and featured to many filler tracks. It would've been better if it had been a 10-13 track album (instead of 18 tracks), with the filler tracks taken out. Quality is better than quantity. Also, it didn't feature Christine McVie as a member, so for these two reasons I believe Say You Will is not a fitting end to their legacy.
I really hope that one last album with the full "Rumours" line-up will be a fitting end to their legacy. Lindsey and Christine apparently have some strong material already written. I just hope Stevie plays ball over this next year or two and makes this happen, plus a following tour. It also wouldn't bother me if a new album contained the tracks from the Extended Play EP from 2013. Those songs (especially Sad Angel) never got the recognition they deserved. The band were certainly top-notch when I saw them last year (2015) in London. |
The band ending in turmoil like they are right now would be the best and most fitting way for them to end. Fans won't like it, but it has been the theme in Fleetwood Mac for 40 years and that's how it should end
|
In many ways, MIRAGE is the end of their legacy. All the projects since, despite moments of greatness, lack the spirit of the five of them working as a full band.
I do admire much of SYW. And THE DANCE was well-executed, nastalgia. But... |

The Dance was more of an ideal ending than SYW. If I were in the band, I wouldn't be satisfied with ending the discography on that note. I would want to "end" the legacy with the Rumours line-up in tact, and releasing all of this supposedly profound music they've worked on recently.

Take Stevie's songs off there and it would
have been a good Lindsey album. A B-12 shot would have done them all a bit of good during the SYW Sessions. |
they already have a legacy, and it is not that important what the end of it will be. but they recorded new music, they claim that's it's great and interesting, and we want to hear it. it's just that simple. no big symbolism or extra meanings. we just want to hear their new music, and the 2 sonwriters who produced that new music want it out and to be heard.
they need to release it. Mick seems to be going back and forth on will they - won't they release it, instead of needlessly waiting for many more years. Christine and Lindsey seem ready to release what they have, asap. and tour it as a foursome. i wish they'd finally go through with it! |
Part of me wants to agree with you... but I don't wish there to be a negative association with the band's "ending." I think it's better to have a positive outcome to something that's been tumultuous, don't you? Given the choice, I think most people would choose healing over broken pieces.[/QUOTE]
Yeah I don't want them to end in turmoil, but I think it would just be fitting. I'd love to see another album (preferable double) and a world tour. |
I kinda think that when Christine came back, it threw a wrentch in the 'plan'.
Soooo, SN went on another huge tour - postponing her plans - and against her '3 year til ya tour again' thang with FM.... And now, she put her foot down and is like - hey, I need my time for my thang. I personally see, in no way shape or form, that these 5 would do a swan song album without all 5. SN's devotion is deep. And I kinda think the the rest of the band is giving her the room to do her thang, hence the holding off on the album until they are all there. |

Nope. I liked SAY YOU WILL, and it MIGHT have been acceptable had Christine not returned, but with her back.... no, we need one more with the 5!

I actually LOVED SYW. I remember being happy it had so many songs and loved all of them, except for "Come."
I remember the Today show performance and waking up early to record it on VHS and also the amazing tour. I caught a show in 12th row at the Staples center. And loved the entire Boston show on DVD. I liked the change of it being a 4 piece band for a while, although glad Christine has returned. It would be great to have one last album, but if not, SYW sits nicely in my FM collection, and I am really enjoying Stevie's solo output the past few years. She filled the almost 18,000 set arena in Phoenix 2 nights ago, did only 3 FM songs and played mostly new songs and songs she hasn't done live before, or in a long time |
I really think that Tusk is the point at which the legacy issues kicks in.
Someone has said this before, but it's worth repeating: Rumours was the sound of the band exploding; Tusk was the image of the pieces falling back down to earth (there's a worthwhile parallel to be drawn with Sergeant Pepper and the White Album). What's happened since 1979 has been on occasion enjoyable, intriguing, inventive and maddening, but unfortunately sporadically repetitive, self-affirming and even terrible, but the trajectory has somehow been lost (although there's still time brothers and sisters, there's still time..). Five full studio albums and a few scraps here and there in 36 years does not really demonstrate a living, breathing developing musical entity. But, If nothing else happens, I'm still okay with them- as a live act they sound far better than a bunch of circa 70-somethings ought to and casual fans have a great time at their gigs, however much obsessives like us may grumble. In answer to another question posed in another thread, the best era of Fleetwood Mac? 1967-1979. Does that feel like too long a time? Not from the standpoint of the geological epoch since Say you Will. |
It's so not fitting because it's not really a band album. As much as B/N was good in 1974. And believe me, I love that album. The 2003 B/N co-album was a miss. I think with some editing and maybe if they had written together in the studio it might have made a huge difference.
It does have some great moments. Illume has some great moments. and then there's Silver Girl which is so nasal and boring. I think they should have ended the album with Say Goodbye and cut Goodbye Baby all together. Cut WTWCT (such a bomb to open an album) Christine and Lindsey sound more like FMac to me than SYW.. but that remains to be seen for the new music. Here's hoping. |
Will if the Mac ends it now .I'll call it a cliff hanger.I'll say Mirage and The Dance as a tie and SYW was their last commercial success with 4 of them.I do have a bad feeling if their upcoming album if it sees the day of light will not get much radio airplay with or with out Stevie like SYW did when it was released.I remember hearing SYW and Peacekeeper non stop from everywhere back then.Store PA systems,Internet radio,Doctor offices and of course the radio.
|
Agreed: "It's so not fitting because it's not really a band album. "
I loved SYW, but the above statement sums it up perfectly. They should have let Christine record. I think a song or two from her ITMT would have been good additions to the album. |
Re: Christine & ITMT
I have, several times over, edited SYW and added in some Christine songs from her last album. It makes me feel a little better. Plenty of filler from B/N on SYW. I could be ok with it being the last album if it were pared down...or the possibility of another album didn't exist somewhere in the universe. I will bide my time and wait for the eventual album (that still won't please everyone). I think they'll put a respectable studio effort together including Stevie to cap things off. Then when they swap one song out each in the set everyone can be happy...?

This whole "you have to tour if you record" mentality is all wrong. |

A legendary band deserves a major send off. SYW is definitely not it.

I have loved Stevie's music since I was a kid, and in a lot of ways her songs with FM have been my favorite. And certainly her solo work has been my favorite of the bunch. But if she doesn't come back to the band for what is in all likelihood the last album they'll record, I will be severely disappointed in her.

I've never got the criticism of What's The World Coming To.
I remember listening to Say You Will with bated breath wondering if the music was going to be a big let down. Half way through WTWCT I relaxed and thought 'this is okay, if the rest is like this -that'll do' (though its not the best album and there's plenty to criticise, I'm still satisfied with it and most certainly glad it was made). As an opener I'd put it in the same mould as Monday Morning and Second Hand News. |

second hand news is one of the best pop songs ever put together, imo. pure sacrilege to even put those 2 in the same sentence! :p :D ;) that said, other than WTWCT i think SYW batch of songs are among some of LB's best. great great work from him. |

Sorry John and Elle, I'm with Fuzzy. WTWCT is one of my (few) favorite songs on SYW. SYW as a whole though, is a hole. They should act as though it's BTM, or Time. Because it blow goats. No, not that one...

I'm not for one minute saying its as good as Monday Morning or Second Hand News, just that it's in the same sort of vein as an opener. That's to say its a jaunty, uptempo Lindsey song (for some reason, although I'd bracket it with MM and SHN, I don't think it sits the same as Big Love). I don't think it's a great song, but its not bad. Certainly when I started playing Say You Will I half expected worse. It doesn't deserve such vitriol. Perhaps Peacekeeper could have opened the album though. |
