Stevie's Stinkers...
Probably not a great title. Oh well.
I'm a dedicated fan and like her songs very much, just not every single one she has made. This might be (I think) a fun topic to discuss. These are some of her tunes I can do without: 1. Talk To Me 2. Desert Angel 3. Sometimes It's a Bitch 4. Whole Lotta Trouble 5. I Can't Wait 6. Love's A Hard Game To Play 7. I Will Run To You There are a few more but I can't remember which ones right now. |

Besides Talk to Me (which is not really a Stevie song), your list would be in my favorite section  Here is mine: Everyday Affairs of the heart Welcome to the room Sara That made me stronger Second Time Around |

"If Anyone Falls"
"I Can't Wait" "Sister Honey" "Some Become Strangers" "Talk To Me" "The Nightmare" "Welcome to the Room ... Sara" "Long Way To Go" is borderline "Two Kinds of Love" "Ooh My Love" "Whole Lotta Trouble" "Alice" "Unconditional Love" "Jane" "One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star" "Every Day" "That Made Me Stronger" "Love Is" "Say You Will" "New Orleans" "Cheaper Than Free" There's some others I don't care for (the "Wild Heart"/"Sweet Girl"/"Secret Love" level) or some that I kind of enjoy but think have real weaknesses ("Nothing Ever Changes"/"Street Angel"/"Silver Girl" and so on), but maybe I wouldn't call those stinky. I know that's a lot. |
I rank as stinkers her aimless trying-to-be-a-rocker stuff with honky-tonk overtones influenced by Tom Petty. I Need to Know, Blue Lamp, Enchanted, Gold and Braid, One More Bigtime R&R Star, Violet and Blue. I also categorize as stinkers badly produced corpse-through-the-underbrush stuff like Rose Garden, Highwayman, and FWIW.

OK kill me guys.
I usually dont fuss about bad Stevie tunes but I have to add" You Can't Fix This" with Dave G. The lyrics are great but I could do without the rock guitar in it.So a 50/50 vote goes out on this tune. I never was a heavy guitar rock fan and I can tolerate Lindsey's and Waddy's playing with the bands. |

Somebody Stand By Me has really grown on me of late. On pitch, On Key. Vibratto. Range. Belting. Emotion missing up till then in all her previous 90s recordings. It is a great vocal for her. Her voice between that song and up till TISL was so good. Twisted was just so so but her quitting smoking in 96 really made a huge difference that would be heard on the Dance and TISL. Her starting up again after TISL plus "The Change of Life" started a deterioration right around SYL. Anyhow, Somebody Stand By Me almost sounded like her early 80s voice that was almost 90% back for The Enchanted Tour. Some of those Enchanted Tour bootlegs I sometimes confuse with the White Wing Dove tour!

Worst of the Worst:
Jane Love's a Hard Game to Play If I Were You It's Only Love I Miss You Too Far From Texas That Made Me Stronger Love Changes Desert Angel |
There's very few Stevie songs I actively dislike. I'm in the minority that thouroughly enjoye her "Behind The Mask" contributions and can see the good album burried in "Street Angel".
The only Mac-stinker of Stevie's tracks for me is "When I See You Again". It's a dull song anyway with a horrific vocal. She sounds like an old Hoover or a bagpipe! Solo wise, I have a short list of stinkers: Long Distance Winner The Nightmare Fire Burning Thousand Days Docklands Jane Just Like A Woman (good song, snooze fest of a cover!) Unconditional Love (how the hell this was ever going to be a lead single, I do not know!) Touched by an Angel Cheaper Than Free Most of 24KG, but specifically: I Don't Care, Mable Normand, Carousel, Blue Water (love the demo, hate the studio version!), Hard Advice. I love the songs that seem to get all the hate - The Second Time, Paper Doll, No Questions Asked, Silver Girl, Greta, That Made Me Stronger etc etc. |

I like the song "Somebody Stand By Me" but Stevie's vocal is not my favorite. Still, I don't hate it.
I liked Stevie on Behind the Mask as well, more so than most of that record, and Street Angel doesn't bother me as much as it bothers most others. I like listening to it better than The Other Side of The Mirror and Rock a Little. I love "I Don't Care" :) |
I don't think you need to like everything they've ever done to be a fan, especially not with such a long career. And if you are a mature listener with some of your own discernment and you know that nobody's perfect.
I agree with the first list. Apart from HAEWAFY I think Rock A Little was very ordinary and so were the follow ups. Stevie herself would likely admit that wasn't her best era. You have to consider what she was going through at the time. Fortunately she was able to get through that and make a return to better form. Edit: and now it seems like she once said that 'Other Side Of The Mirror' is probably her favorite album because the songs were written before she was on Klonopin. Sometimes I find it difficult to understand her taste and judgment. I hated the Twilight books and movies, for example. But I suppose that she's entitled to like what she wants to. |

Soldier's Angel... Whyyyy?
|
I think rock n' roll Stevie is her worst stuff, the allure and mystique are destroyed and her vocals shabby. She shines in ballads which showcase her real vocal and songwriting abilities, or in certain well produced midtempo things.

You make a very valid point, her area is ballads, she has a perfect voice for it, and I think Beauty and the Beast is a good example of that. |

Docklands is my absolute least favorite Stevie song ever. Just so bad in every way, although I'm sure it's also someone's favorite! Stevie singing about doing laundry always makes me laugh.
I feel badly that I hate songs that seem to mean a lot to her personally, like Desert Angel, Street Angel, Soldier's Angel, Jane, and Illume but I think she feels so strongly about those subjects that the songs become heavy handed or something. Whatever it is, to me they sound awful. One More Big Time Rock and Roll Star, When I See You Again, Fire Burning, Cry Wolf, Sweet Girl, Silver Girl, and the Highwayman complete my list of listenable songs. |
