Why did Stevie re record Twister?
 

Was she unhappy with Lindsey's production of the song? Was it a little dig? Like saying I can do this better with another producer? I personally think the Lindsey produced version is better.

Agreed, the song works much better as a duet with the interplay between them. The solo version does not compare at all. It might as well be a carnival tune.

From what she said during the 24K interviews, that is exactly why. The song as she wrote it was much toned down and not a big production.

The 24K version isn't bad voice wise... kind of generic..

Even though the orig version sounds a bit dated, I like it better..

While I definitely view her rerecording the song as a way to thumb her nose at Lindsey, I don't think it's solely that. Stevie has long lamented how the songs she's contributed to movie soundtracks essentially disappear into the ether. To me, her rerecording Twisted is a way to cement her love of the song, and bring it to the forefront for her fans. Ironically, the song undoubtedly reached far more ears through it's inclusion in Twister than it ever will through 24k. So her mission failed, in that respect. Nobody new heard the song because of 24k.

On a side note, now having had 24k for a while I find the production issues and mastering such a hindrance. Every time I hear The Dealer I'm constantly distracted, wondering why one line of vocals is so nice and clear and then it goes back to sounding like an album recorded using a 2 way radio. It was so refreshing to hear IYD after hearing some of the vocals on TISL...which for the most part still sounds better sonically than 24k.

There is some really good stuff at the end of IYD. I agree about TISL recording.. uhhh..

Maybe true that it reached more ears during its initial release, but being a more recent fan I heard it for the first time on 24K.

And the 24K version is undoubtedly my favorite. I find the drumbeat incredibly distracting in the original and Enchanted versions.

Although I love to hear Stevie and Lindsey sing together of course. So I can't say I hate that one in any way.

I can't conjecture why she re-recorded it, but lyrically I love it and will forgive any of the sonic issues it has in any incarnation.

I can't believe Lindsey cares about Twister. If she went and re-recorded Gypsy and indicated that her version was the only good one, I'm sure that would get under his skin, but not Twister.

I love the version with Lindsey and was beyond excited to get it at a time when there was no FM. I practically pulled my hair out over it. BUT I like the 24K version quite a bit too. I think the 24K version is kind of sultry.

B101.1: What was it like working on the movie, "Twister"?

LINDSEY: That was a really great thing for Stevie and me, because it had been an awful long time. I don't think we'd done a two-part harmony like that even in the later years of Fleetwood Mac. It almost harkened back to Buckingham-Nicks. Her voice is really sounding great and that blend never went away. So it was kind of an eye-opener when we finally started overdubbing the vocals on that. It was really great.

Didn't stevie make a point about how it was on a soundtrack and no one really heard it so she re-recorded it

But the LB version of Twister is the best of the produced versions, hands down. His playing makes it.

I like her songwriting demo as well.

To me the version with Lindsey is perfect.

I don't like the TISL versions of Candlebright and Sorcerer as much as the Buckingham Nicks demos either - even though they are only demos I prefer to listen to them. If only they had been finished songs :(

"‘Twisted’ was written in 1995 for a movie called ‘Twister’ and I was actually approached to write it for this movie. So I kinda, uh, I went and saw the movie without any music in it and really, uh, you know, got the gist of what these crazy people do when they follow these tornadoes around in cars and, um, are almost killed, and why they do it is to protect us and to be able, you know, warn the, uh, American public or wherever that there’s a tornado coming. And, um, so, it was pretty, you know, pretty violent and scary and so I went and I wrote this song called ‘Twisted’ and, um, uh, I recorded it with Lindsey for the movie and, uh, we did a, uh, you know, we did a movie version of this song. And, um, years and years later - like a couple of months ago - I was listening to, uh, some demos and the ‘Twister’ demo that I had originally made in my house in Phoenix, um, came on and at first I didn’t recognize it because it’s very, very different than the version that went in the movie. And I just went like, I just love this song and I think song deserves another chance because I think any song that goes into a movie - unless it’s a huge, you know, unless it’s like a, you know, Terminator movie or something - is gonna be heard, seen for a second and never thought of again. So I thought this song deserves to be re—recorded and re-done and so I just decided that it should be on this record. So I took it with me to Nashville and, of course, they did it exactly like my demo which I loved because that’s the way I really always wanted it to be, anyway. And it’s, you know, it’s not just a song about tornadoes; it’s a song about when a man or a woman comes into your life and they are a tornado and they almost just wipe you out and, uh, so it’s, it is a love song. And it’s kind of a crazy love song and, um, I’m very proud of it because it is so much what I always wanted it to be and I hope everybody, you know, everybody has their ‘She Loves Him Still’ and everybody has their tornado. So, this is for all the tornadoes in peoples’ lives that are actually human."

Actually I forgot about this song these last months but now that I remember I have to say that I have always liked more the 24K Gold version of it.
The movie version has a sound that is too much late 90s, with that adult contemporary vibe.

I love the song, so I just think it's great that we get two pretty awesome versions of it. I appreciate the Stevie/Lindsey version for leading to The Dance and I think the 24KG version is beautifully sung.

this is an interesting quote... I saw another interview of hers where she said she got the script and read it, and then says, well my ASSISTANT read it and then told me the gist of it...:nod: Then she said she figured out the way she could relate to it was that it was about people whose job got in the way of their personal relationships.

Maybe she saw it before any music soundtrack was done also, but I totally am buying that she made Karen read the script and summarize it for her.

I agree. When I was it was going to be on 24K I thought they might do it up like the live version with that amazing intro and the keyboards and all that. That live version is so epic but none of the recordings of it are very clean or sound that great. Its such a shame because it's such a great arrangement of that song.

If I were Karen, I'd just fake half the stuff Stevie told me to do and pretend I'd done it. "Oh, yeah it's all about a giant tornado, totally wrecks this trailer park where star crossed lovers were employed as the groundskeepers."

So in the interview she basically says that the 24k version is how she always envisioned it to be. You know , not like when that evil Lindsey get's a hold of it. Ha. I think she thinks all of her songs should be just like her demos. Perfect. I've got news for you Stevie, you should be thanking Lindsey for what he's done to many of your songs. The last couple of years she is really eroding the love I used to have for her. ugh.

I love the 24 Karat Gold version and the version with Lindsey. Both are amazing in their own way.

The version on 24 Karat Gold is the best version. Lindsey's was the weakest version.

i love Twisted from the soundtrack. the interplay of Lindsey's and Stevie's voice there is pretty divine, one of their best imo.

i tried to listen to Stevie solo versions of Twisted since i loved the soundtrack version so much, and was unpleasantly surprised, to my ears they sound completely bland and uninteresting. :shrug:

It's almost painful, to my ears. Especially, the intro.
