Holy Crap--Over and Over Outro--Expanded Version

Holy Crap this outro is really strong, the original fades away and lulls you, this version kinda slaps you in the face not expecting it

I love it too. If you listen to the remastered album version you can here those vocals at the very end. I like both but I love the this new version. I wonder if hey should have left those vocals mixed in more with the other version.

This is the version of Over & Over they should have put on the album, except all the over and overs at the end should have been Christine with Stevie and Lindsey singing back up harmonies like they sang it live. In this outtake it sounds like it's just Lindsey singing the over and overs and it sounds weird that he's singing it and not Christine.

Macfan4life 01-29-2016 06:26 AM

Cool.
Some Mac songs sound better live and this is definitely one of them. In fact, I would say its #1 for their entire catalog that sounded better live.
I always thought the studio version sounds like Chris holding back on her vocals some. Its such a better song live for a million reasons.

Wdm6789 01-29-2016 09:56 AM

I think the problem with a lot of the songs on Tusk is that Lindsey was more concerned with them sounding different than he was with them sounding good.

jbrownsjr 01-29-2016 10:56 AM

This version is sublime. I understand this song so much more with every live or outtake version I hear.

Christine and Lindsey did such amazing work together. I can see why he was so stoked about working with her again.

Makes me want that new album even more.

What a load of crap. Lindsey put his blood, sweat & tears into making that album the masterpiece that it is.Every nuance of every song was carefully articulated during the 13 months of recording.People seem to forget there are 4 other people in that group and try to blame every bad thing on Lindsey. As the Producer he had to be a tad bit more serious than all the others. I'm sure that meant he couldn't allow himself to be as drunk or as high and that would make him come across as an Ayatollah to some, perhaps. But when you are steering the ship it is your job to make sure you stay on course while the rest of the crew has more time to catch some rays on the deck.

Makes me long for a Buckingham McVie duo album.

Over & Over is one of my all time favorite Christine songs. The Live (1980) album version totally blows my socks off every single time I hear it. What a monster it was compared to the downright staid studio/album cut.

That's what has always made this song such an interesting study in contrasts to me- the lyrics are about starting a new relationship, and Christine having to pinch herself because it's such a dream come true. Yet the music is positively mournful. I guess maybe that's the genius of the song, though- it's capturing the anxiety and obsession of a new relationship, and the reality that it might not work out.

I kinda like how different the final album cut and the live renditions are, though. The album version is so solemn- almost like a private prayer; yet the song onstage just totally taps into those explosive feelings. Such a great song.

Wow! I love this analysis. It's so spot on and I never thought about the mournfulness of the music. Yet, it so fits the Tusk concept and Lindsey's vision. Again, making me understand how this song starts the album.

Can you guys hear the little extra guitar licks on the left channel... They are so beautiful... sometimes they float to the right channel...

What a load of crap, can you lay off with the Lindsey hate! That album wouldn't be what it is without him.

I'm not hating on Lindsey. I'm making an observation. That is how I interpret Tusk after listening through it many many times.

Btw, the "what a load of crap" comment was a little rude.

BLY 01-30-2016 06:59 AM

Tusk has always been my favorite album since its release. After the release of this amazing box set its like I'm appreciating it at new level. What Lindsey did with Stevie and Christine's songs to fit in with his songs and vision was spot on. He was and is a master at his trade. I can't wait to hear what's next.

WildHearted 02-01-2016 12:32 PM

I absolutely love this ending, wow.

I can't put it down. I've been listening to it for about a month straight. And the live tour is amazing, too. What a treat.

The Ledge: where only blanket comments unflattering to Stevie are acceptable. If you have an unfavorable opinion of her, it's totally cool to throw her under the bus. Any equal treatment of Lindsey is met with harsh reprimand, as you've seen.

Clearly, the millions that loved Rumours did *not* love Tusk, and Lindsey's blood, sweat and tears are the #1 reason - but just don't say it out loud.

Kubrick2788 02-02-2016 02:55 PM

The only drawback to this version is that not all 3 voices are on it at the end. Those outro Over and Overs would've been fantastic with some harmony on them! I'll still give the edge to the album cut for now (and an outtake I have somewhere), but this will probably grow on me.

KarmaContestant 02-02-2016 04:59 PM

Over and Over is a favorite track of mine on Tusk, and always has been. The version on Alternate Tusk is gorgeous, but does feel different with those missing harmonies.

The live one from the new Deluxe Tusk is pretty straightforward, almost causal sounding in comparison to the album version - I might even say Christine sounds bored - until you get to the ending, and it really kicks in - I absolutely love it. The guitar! And Stevie's voice feels essential to the whole thing, which isn't really noticeable until you hear the alternate version without her vocals.

**

Despite what I said earlier about Lindsey and Tusk, I think the album is a masterpiece, completely, and I wouldn't change a thing. But I think it's important to be accommodating to the opinions of others instead of attacking them or calling them 'a load of crap', and there are many who just don't care for the way Tusk turned out. From Mick telling Lindsey he "blew it" to the lackluster sales in comparison to Fleetwood Mac and Rumours. He tried to stay true to the audio aesthetic of both Stevie and Chris, but he still bears responsibility for the final product as the credited producer.

Lindsey demanded complete creative control, and threatened to walk if he didn't get it, so Mick gave it to him and I'm sure no other member was going to challenge him in the studio. Tusk was Lindsey's pet project, and I feel its completely acceptable to look his direction when discussing aspects of the production that aren't appealing, be it his own songs, or the decisions made on Stevie and Chris' songs.

Yes, Lindsey worked hard, but what he did was a turnoff to some - it's obvious through interviews over the years that he was trying to break a mold, and hearing alternate versions of some songs lends credibility to the idea that not all the decisions he is ultimately responsible for were the best decisions.

Someone else not liking his work - or Stevie's work - or Chris' work doesn't affect your own enjoyment of said work. Speaking for myself, but also for others, the tendency of some Ledge members to immediately go on the offensive anytime they don't agree with an opinion has been a huge factor in driving people away from posting here. But I guess it's always been that way, and probably won't ever change. I won't name names, but the Stevie forum isn't dead without reason, and it has nothing to do with Stevie's output or activity.

I'm a much bigger fan of SN than LB but Lindsey needs more defenders in his corner. Stevie has an army of them here and I don't like the Stevie bashing either.

Most times I keep my mouth shut and opinions to myself but like I mentioned, there are 5 people in FM. Blaming Lindsey is unfair. Also, Facebook is the reason The Ledge has less readership. But TL still ranks the #1 place to be for up to the minute information.

That's not true. You are not allowed to bash Christine, either! ;)

It's unfair only if all 5 were equally responsible for the way it came out. And if that is the case, it would be equally unfair for those who consider Tusk to be a masterpiece to give Lindsey the lion's share of the credit.

That's the one of the most lucid arguments I've seen on this forum.

It's true. He took charge of the album. He has to take the good with the bad. Stevie didn't want anything to do with the concept. And Christine wasn't crazy about some of it, either. Mick fought with him a lot. And John got his bass parts done for him, at times. So yeah, he drove this music.

I think the album is a masterpiece. But, it's not for everyone.
